The Triangle Capella 2 is a complete active stereo system that produces bass on its own. Triangle specifies a 42 Hz–22 kHz response (±3 dB) for its bass-reflex design, so many listeners will be satisfied without another speaker. A powered subwoofer becomes worthwhile when you want more low-frequency weight, listen in a room that weakens bass, or prefer the impact of very deep movie and music content. The Stereo Hub 2 includes a dedicated subwoofer output, and the Capella app provides level and crossover controls, making the addition optional rather than an all-or-nothing upgrade.
What the Capella 2 already does without a subwoofer
The Capella 2 is an active Wi-Fi and Bluetooth speaker system: amplification and signal processing are built into the speakers, with the Stereo Hub 2 handling sources and system control. Its bass-reflex enclosure is designed to extend the low end without a separate bass speaker. Triangle’s current product specification lists a frequency response of 42 Hz–22 kHz (±3 dB). That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent in-room measurement; your room, listening position and volume can produce a different result.

A 42 Hz lower limit covers the fundamental range of most bass guitar, kick drums and orchestral basses. It does not mean the system stops producing sound below 42 Hz, nor does it promise the same output at every frequency. It means Triangle states that response within its tolerance over that range. For ordinary two-channel listening, the Capella 2 can therefore operate as a full system without a subwoofer.
An independent T3 review dated October 10, 2026, also reports the 42 Hz–22 kHz range and describes the app’s integration controls. That review does not establish a universal need for a subwoofer or provide a controlled comparison of Capella 2 systems with and without one.

When adding a subwoofer makes sense
You want deeper, heavier bass
A subwoofer can take over the lowest octave and add physical impact that compact stereo speakers cannot always deliver at high levels. The difference is most obvious with electronic sub-bass, pipe organ, cinematic effects and recordings mixed for strong low-frequency energy. It can also let the Capella 2 play loudly with less demand on its own woofers, although the sources supplied do not quantify a particular output increase.
Your room changes the bass balance
Triangle specifically warns that low frequencies are highly sensitive to room acoustics. In a room that is too small, bass can resonate and become boomy; in a very large room, it can seem diluted. Those descriptions are qualitative—Triangle gives no numeric room-size threshold—so room volume alone cannot determine whether you need a subwoofer. Furniture, walls, floor construction and the listening seat all matter.
You want to tune the low end independently
The Capella app lets you enable the subwoofer, adjust its output and choose a crossover frequency. That separate control is useful if the system sounds lean at your seat or if you want to reduce the amount of deep bass from the main speakers. It is also useful when a subwoofer is placed in a position that produces a different bass balance from the speakers.

When you can reasonably skip the subwoofer
- You mainly play acoustic, vocal, jazz or other recordings whose bass already sounds full and controlled.
- Your listening level is moderate and you do not miss very deep effects or sub-bass.
- The Capella 2 measures or sounds balanced at your normal seat after sensible placement.
- You cannot place a subwoofer where it can be integrated and adjusted without causing a room boom.
- You prefer the simpler appearance, wiring and setup of a two-speaker system.
These are listening decisions, not failures of the Capella 2. Triangle describes a subwoofer as something that can reinforce the speakers and enhance bass response, not as a required component.
How the Capella 2 connects to a subwoofer
The Stereo Hub 2 has a dedicated SUB OUT. Triangle’s support instructions call for a wired connection from that output to the subwoofer’s input using a compatible LFE cable. The subwoofer must be powered separately. The company names the Thétis 340 as an example; it does not state that this is the only compatible model or that every subwoofer will work.
For another model, check its manual or rear-panel labeling before buying. It should provide an input that accepts the hub’s subwoofer output, such as an LFE or line-level input, and it should have its own amplifier. The documentation does not establish compatibility for every brand, connector arrangement or wireless subwoofer system, so do not assume that a speaker-level-only model will connect directly.

Step-by-step setup in the Capella system
- Switch off the equipment. Turn off the Stereo Hub 2 and the subwoofer before connecting the cable.
- Connect the signal cable. Plug a compatible LFE cable into the Stereo Hub 2’s SUB OUT, then connect the other end to the subwoofer’s appropriate input.
- Power the subwoofer. Switch it on and set its physical controls to a neutral starting position if the manufacturer provides one.
- Open the TRIANGLE CAPELLA app. Check whether the app detects the subwoofer and shows it as active.
- Enable 2.1 Layout if necessary. Triangle’s support guide says to turn on 2.1 Layout mode when the subwoofer is not detected.
- Open Bass Management. Enable the subwoofer, then adjust its output level and select a crossover frequency.
- Listen from your normal seat. Use familiar tracks with sustained bass, vocals and kick drum. Change one control at a time so you can identify what improved or worsened the balance.
- Recheck after placement changes. Moving the subwoofer or the listening seat can alter bass dramatically, so repeat the level and crossover adjustment if either position changes.
The app controls are an integration aid, not a guarantee of perfect blending. A subwoofer can sound detached, boomy or too quiet if its position, level or crossover does not suit the room.

Start with connection and control
Prioritize a powered subwoofer with a line-level or LFE input that accepts the Stereo Hub 2’s output. A continuously adjustable level control is helpful, and phase or polarity adjustment can make alignment easier when the manufacturer provides it. The supplied guidance does not identify a required wattage, driver size or frequency rating, so those specifications should be chosen for your room and listening level rather than treated as Capella 2 requirements.
Use the Thétis 340 as an example, not a rule
Triangle’s support material uses the Thétis 340 in its setup example and specifies an LFE cable. That makes it a documented example within the manufacturer’s ecosystem. It does not prove that it is the best choice for every room, nor does it exclude other powered subwoofers with a suitable input. Confirm the other model’s input and controls before purchase.

Do not buy on driver size alone
A larger driver is not automatically better in a small room, and a small subwoofer cannot be assumed to provide the same headroom as a larger one. The relevant questions are whether it can reach your desired depth, whether its level can be integrated with the Capella 2, and whether you have a practical location that avoids a strong room resonance.
Crossover and level: a practical tuning approach
Triangle provides a crossover selector in Bass Management but does not publish one universal setting for every room or subwoofer. The correct value depends on the subwoofer’s response, placement and how the Capella 2 and subwoofer interact at your seat.
Recommended Free Tools
- Begin with the subwoofer output low enough that bass is present but not obvious as a separate source.
- Play a track with a steady bass line and adjust the crossover until the transition sounds even rather than thick or hollow.
- Raise the subwoofer level in small steps only until the system gains the weight you wanted.
- Switch between several recordings. If one track becomes boomy while another remains thin, the room or placement may be the larger problem.
- After finding a setting, listen for a day or two before making fine changes; novelty can make extra bass seem better than a balanced setting.
There is no evidence in the cited material for a single ideal crossover frequency, a laboratory-derived preset or a universal subwoofer level. Treat the app values as adjustment tools and use your listening position as the reference.

Placement and room problems to check first
Low-frequency wavelengths are long, so moving a subwoofer a short distance can change the result substantially. Avoid hiding it in a corner by default if that location produces excessive resonance. Conversely, a position that sounds weak may simply be sitting in a room null; turning up the level will not reliably fix a cancellation at the listening seat.
Before changing equipment, try moving the subwoofer along the front wall or to another practical location, then re-run the app adjustments. Keep the Capella 2 speakers positioned for a stable stereo image and judge bass from the seat where you normally listen. If the room is very small and bass already resonates, a subwoofer may make the problem more obvious. If the room is large and open, the extra low-frequency output may be more useful, but the result still depends on placement and furnishings.
Capella 2 alone versus Capella 2 plus a subwoofer
| Consideration | Capella 2 alone | With a powered subwoofer |
|---|---|---|
| Basic bass capability | Triangle states 42 Hz–22 kHz (±3 dB) for the active bass-reflex system. | Adds a separate low-frequency source; the final response depends on the subwoofer, room and settings. |
| Connections | No additional signal cable or powered box. | Wired from Stereo Hub 2 SUB OUT with a compatible LFE cable; the subwoofer needs mains power. |
| App controls | Normal Capella controls. | 2.1 Layout and Bass Management provide enable, output and crossover controls. |
| Room sensitivity | Still affected by room modes and speaker placement. | Adds another placement variable and can either smooth or worsen bass depending on location. |
| Best fit | Listeners satisfied with existing extension and a simpler setup. | Listeners seeking more weight, deeper effects or independent bass adjustment. |
What is established—and what is not
The manufacturer’s product page establishes the stated frequency range, bass-reflex active design and subwoofer output. Triangle’s support page establishes the wired SUB OUT connection, LFE cable, 2.1 Layout mode and Bass Management controls, and gives the Thétis 340 as an example. Triangle’s technology information describes a configurable subwoofer output and bass-reflex port design.

The absence of those figures matters: a recommendation based on your room and preference is more defensible than declaring that every Capella 2 owner needs—or should avoid—a subwoofer.
A simple decision rule
- Listen first. If the Capella 2 already sounds full at your usual seat, do not add a subwoofer merely because the system has an output for one.
- Identify the missing quality. Decide whether you need deeper extension, more physical impact, higher low-frequency headroom or simply a different tonal balance.
- Check the room. If bass is already boomy, placement and acoustics should be addressed before adding output.
- Confirm compatibility. Choose a powered model with an input suitable for SUB OUT and plan for an LFE cable.
- Tune in 2.1 Layout. Use Bass Management to enable the subwoofer, choose a crossover and set its output from your listening seat.
For most buyers, the sensible starting point is Capella 2 alone. Add a subwoofer when a specific listening goal remains unmet, then use the Stereo Hub 2 and app controls to integrate it rather than running it as an unadjusted extra speaker.
