Do You Need a Soundbar for a New TV? What to Check Before Buying

No—not automatically. A soundbar is an optional upgrade. Buy one when your TV’s speakers do not deliver the dialogue clarity, bass, width or immersion you want. Before paying, verify the ports on both devices, the audio formats you plan to use, the required cable and the soundbar’s physical fit. A TV that already sounds satisfying for your room and viewing habits may not justify an external speaker.

Start with the problem you want to solve

The right question is not whether every new television needs a soundbar. It is whether your television’s current audio fails in a way an external speaker can address. Listen to the TV in the room where it will be used, at the volume you normally choose, with the programs you watch most.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Dialogue: Do speech and whispered lines remain intelligible without constantly raising the volume?
  • Bass: Do films, games and music sound thin because there is little low-frequency weight?
  • Width and immersion: Do you want sound to appear broader than the television or to have a surround-style presentation?
  • Room and use: Is the television in an open room, a bedroom or a small sitting area where a large system would be unnecessary?

If the built-in speakers meet those needs, keep them and spend nothing. If one or more problems are persistent, a soundbar can be a simpler upgrade than a receiver and separate speakers. The amount of improvement depends on the exact television, soundbar, room and listening position; no general rule says that all new TVs sound poor or that every soundbar will sound better.

Check the television and soundbar ports before buying

Compatibility starts with the labels on the rear or side panels and in each product’s manual. Match a TV output with an input on the soundbar before comparing features or channel counts.

Connection What to look for Practical implications
HDMI ARC An HDMI port on the TV marked ARC and a matching TV ARC connection on the soundbar One HDMI cable can carry television audio to the bar. The ARC port is used for both input and output, so it occupies a TV HDMI socket that might otherwise connect an external device.
HDMI eARC An HDMI port marked eARC on both devices, where required by the desired format Use eARC when the television, source and soundbar all support the higher-bandwidth or format path you need. The exact capabilities remain model-dependent.
Optical digital audio An optical output on the TV and an optical input on the soundbar This is the usual fallback when ARC/eARC is unavailable. Check the manuals for supported formats and feature limitations before relying on it.
Other inputs HDMI inputs, Bluetooth or network features listed for the particular model These may be useful for devices or music, but they do not replace checking how TV audio reaches the bar.

Do not infer compatibility from a product photograph alone. A port may look like HDMI but lack ARC, or a television may expose different options by model and region. Write down the exact TV model and soundbar model, then compare their manuals.

HDMI ARC and eARC: the usual single-cable setup

ARC (Audio Return Channel) lets a television send audio from its own apps, tuner and connected sources back through an HDMI cable to a compatible soundbar. Samsung Canada describes the arrangement this way: “If your TV supports ARC (Audio Return Channel), you can connect your TV and soundbar using an HDMI cable, so audio from your connected devices will play on the soundbar.” That support guide was last updated August 15, 2026, and applies to Samsung TVs sold in Canada; menu names and options can differ elsewhere.

What you need

  • A TV HDMI socket explicitly labelled ARC or eARC.
  • A soundbar socket labelled TV ARC or TV eARC.
  • An HDMI cable in the category specified by the manuals. Samsung’s Canadian setup guidance recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for its ARC/eARC connection.
  • Power for the TV and soundbar, with both devices updated and set to the correct source.

Connection steps

  1. Turn off or place both devices in standby while making connections.
  2. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the TV’s port marked ARC or eARC. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input if it is not labelled for audio return.
  3. Plug the other end into the soundbar’s TV ARC or TV eARC port.
  4. Power on the television and soundbar, then select the soundbar’s TV/ARC source.
  5. Open the TV’s sound settings and choose the external speaker or receiver output. Samsung’s instructions specifically include selecting the soundbar source and setting the TV audio output to an external speaker.
  6. Play a TV app or connected source and confirm that sound comes from the bar. If the TV offers a digital-audio-format choice, begin with the automatic or compatible setting recommended in the manuals.

ARC uses one of the TV’s HDMI ports for two-way duties. If your television has only a few HDMI sockets, count the port before buying and decide whether another device will need to move to a soundbar input or a different TV input.

Can you connect a soundbar without HDMI ARC?

Often, yes. Sony identifies optical digital audio as an alternative when ARC/eARC is not available, provided that both the TV and soundbar have optical ports. Connect an optical cable from the TV’s optical output to the bar’s optical input, select the bar’s optical source and set the TV to output audio through the external or optical device.

Optical is not a universal substitute for every HDMI feature. Supported codecs, control functions and surround or immersive formats vary by model. Read both manuals before assuming that a particular Dolby format, volume-control behavior or automatic power feature will work over optical. If either device lacks both ARC/eARC and optical, inspect the remaining inputs and outputs for a model-specific solution rather than buying on the assumption that any digital cable will work.

Do you need HDMI eARC for Dolby Atmos?

There is no single yes-or-no answer based only on the soundbar’s Atmos logo. Dolby Atmos must be supported by the content and by every relevant device and connection in the signal path. Check the following chain:

  1. Content: The film, episode, game or music service must provide an Atmos soundtrack.
  2. Source: The streaming box, game console, disc player or other source must be able to output the intended Atmos signal.
  3. Television: The TV must pass that signal through the connection you plan to use, or the source may need to connect directly to a compatible soundbar input.
  4. Connection: ARC or eARC capabilities and the chosen cable must be sufficient for the format. The exact requirement depends on the signal and the devices.
  5. Soundbar: The bar must decode or otherwise support the Atmos format you intend to play.

Dolby’s connection guidance explains the role of ARC/eARC paths for Atmos-enabled soundbars, but device-level capabilities differ. Confirm the exact TV, source, soundbar and connection specifications instead of treating “Dolby Atmos” on a box as proof that your complete setup will deliver Atmos. If Atmos is not a priority, do not pay for it merely because a model has the badge.

Check the cable and what is included

Do not assume a new soundbar includes the cable needed for your particular installation. Check the box contents and the manuals for both products before ordering accessories. For Samsung’s Canadian ARC/eARC instructions, the recommended categories are High Speed HDMI with Ethernet or Premium High Speed HDMI; other manufacturers may specify different categories or include a cable.

Use the shortest practical cable that reaches without strain, leave room for ventilation and avoid routing it where the TV stand can pinch the connector. If you change from ARC to eARC, replace a cable only when the manuals or a failed test indicate that the existing cable is unsuitable; a new cable cannot add ARC or eARC support to hardware that lacks it.

Choose features according to your priorities

Soundbar names and channel counts are not a guarantee of a better result in your room. Compare the capabilities that solve your stated problem.

Your priority Features to compare Questions to ask
Clearer speech Dialogue or voice mode, independent center-channel control, remote volume display Can speech be raised without making effects uncomfortably loud? Is the mode available on the input you will use?
More bass Built-in bass capability or a separate subwoofer, subwoofer connection and placement options Is the subwoofer included or optional? Will it fit near a power outlet without blocking a walkway?
Wider or surround-style sound Surround speakers, virtual processing, room-calibration controls and supported formats Are rear speakers included, wired or wireless? Does the feature work with your TV connection and content?
Dolby Atmos Atmos support on the bar plus compatible TV, source, content and connection Which device decodes the signal, and does the manual specify ARC, eARC or a direct source connection?
Simple operation HDMI-CEC/TV remote control, automatic input switching and clear status indicators Will the TV remote change volume and power, and can you select the correct source when the bar wakes?
Music playback Bluetooth, network playback or other stated music inputs Are those functions important enough to justify the additional cost and setup?
Physical fit Bar width, height, depth, wall-mount method and subwoofer dimensions Will the bar block the screen, an infrared receiver or a television stand? Do the speakers fit the available spaces?

A basic bar can be adequate for a dialogue or volume upgrade. A separate subwoofer, rear speakers or Atmos processing adds complexity as well as potential capability. Compare the total price and required accessories, not just the headline specification.

Placement and everyday controls

Place the main bar where it can project sound

Measure the space under the screen and check the bar’s height before buying. A bar that is too tall can cover the lower edge of the picture or the TV’s remote sensor. If wall-mounting, verify the manufacturer’s bracket pattern and leave the clearances specified in both manuals. Keep the front of the bar unobstructed by a cabinet lip, decorative panel or other equipment.

This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

Plan for the subwoofer and rear speakers

If the model includes a subwoofer or surround speakers, confirm their power and wireless requirements and the distance to the listening area. “Wireless” normally removes a signal cable, not the need for a nearby power outlet. Place each component where it can remain connected and where people will not trip over cords.

Keep operation understandable

Make sure the soundbar can be selected from the TV’s external-speaker menu and that the remote or HDMI control method is practical for everyone who uses the room. A feature you cannot select reliably is not a useful feature, regardless of the specification sheet.

Troubleshoot the common setup failures

No sound over HDMI ARC or eARC

  1. Confirm that the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s TV ARC/eARC port, not a neighboring HDMI socket.
  2. Set the soundbar to its TV/ARC source.
  3. Set the television’s audio output to external speaker, receiver or the equivalent label.
  4. Power-cycle both devices: turn them off, disconnect power briefly, reconnect and test again.
  5. Check that HDMI-CEC or the manufacturer’s HDMI-control setting is enabled if the manual requires it for ARC operation.
  6. Try another known-good cable that meets the manufacturer’s stated category, then check firmware and model-specific troubleshooting instructions.

Optical connection is silent

  • Verify that both optical connectors are fully seated and that the protective caps were removed.
  • Select optical on the soundbar and optical or external output on the TV.
  • Use the TV’s compatible PCM or automatic digital-output setting if the soundbar cannot decode the selected format.
  • Confirm that the TV actually provides optical output; some ports are inputs or are absent on particular regional models.

Atmos or surround is not detected

  • Test with content that explicitly carries the format; ordinary stereo programming cannot demonstrate Atmos.
  • Check every device in the chain, including a streaming box or console, for format-output settings.
  • Verify whether the TV passes the format over ARC, eARC or optical, and whether a direct connection to the soundbar is required.
  • Read the exact manuals rather than relying on the soundbar’s badge or a generic cable description.

The TV remote does not change the bar’s volume

Confirm that the TV is using the external-speaker output and that HDMI control/CEC is enabled where required. If the connection is optical, remote integration may be more limited and model-dependent; use the bar’s remote or the manufacturer’s documented control method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A model-agnostic buying checklist

  1. Listen to the TV and write down the specific shortcoming: dialogue, bass, width, immersion or convenience.
  2. Record the TV’s exact model, region and available audio ports.
  3. Record the soundbar’s exact model, TV input, supported formats and included accessories.
  4. Match ARC/eARC on both devices, or confirm optical ports and limitations if ARC/eARC is unavailable.
  5. If Atmos matters, trace content, source, TV, connection and soundbar support as one complete path.
  6. Measure the TV stand, wall space and power locations for the bar, subwoofer and any rear speakers.
  7. Compare total cost, including a cable only if the box and manuals show that one is needed.
  8. Save the manuals and test dialogue, bass, TV apps and each external source during the return period allowed by the seller.

When these checks show that the television already meets your needs, do not buy a soundbar simply because it is a common accessory. When they identify a clear audio problem and a compatible connection, a soundbar is a reasonable, optional upgrade whose value comes from solving that problem.
