No. You can use the Samsung HW-Q990H with a non-Samsung television as a conventional soundbar system, including TV audio sent over HDMI eARC when the television supports it. A compatible Samsung TV is required only for Q-Symphony, the proprietary feature that plays the TV’s built-in speakers and the soundbar system together. Whether your television qualifies depends on its exact model, year and market—not simply on the Samsung logo.
What you can use without a Samsung TV
The HW-Q990H is a complete 11.1.4-channel 2026 Q-series home-theater system with a soundbar, subwoofer and wireless rear speakers. Samsung’s US product page lists both eARC connectivity and Q-Symphony for the model: Samsung HW-Q990H product page.

Its normal soundbar functions do not require a Samsung television. Connect a compatible TV through HDMI ARC/eARC, select the appropriate audio output on the TV and the system can reproduce TV programmes, streaming apps, game audio and other sources. eARC is a connection standard for carrying TV audio to a soundbar; it is not Samsung-only and it does not turn on Q-Symphony.

What Q-Symphony adds
Q-Symphony is a synchronized playback mode, not a general soundbar feature. Samsung defines it as technology that “plays sound from your TV speakers and compatible soundbars or wireless speakers simultaneously, delivering an immersive surround sound experience.” The TV speakers and the external system therefore operate as a coordinated combination rather than the soundbar simply replacing the television speakers.
Samsung’s 2026 Q-Symphony update supports configurations of up to five sound devices, but that published figure describes compatible Samsung equipment and does not mean any five speakers can be mixed. The HW-Q990H must be paired with a supported Samsung TV and the relevant compatible audio devices for the feature to appear.
There is no established independent listening test showing that every room or listener will hear a guaranteed improvement from combining the speakers. The practical benefit is situational: if you specifically want the television’s speakers and the Q990H playing together, compatibility matters. If you only want the Q990H’s soundbar, subwoofer and rear speakers, Q-Symphony is optional.

Does Q-Symphony work with any TV?
No. Q-Symphony is Samsung’s device-integration feature and is not available on arbitrary television brands. A non-Samsung TV can send audio to the Q990H through ARC/eARC or another supported input, but it cannot provide Samsung’s synchronized TV-speaker mode.
Even within Samsung’s range, compatibility is model-specific. Samsung’s Singapore support page, updated July 30, 2026, gives the following starting points for compatible TV lines:
| TV model year | Model line listed as the starting point | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | TU8000 and above | Individual model exceptions and regional differences may apply. |
| 2021 | AU7000 and above | Check the full model number in the local compatibility information. |
| 2022 | BU7000 and above | The line threshold is not a guarantee for every regional variant. |
| 2023 | CU7000 and above | Confirm the exact model and supported audio device. |
| 2024 | DU7000 and above | Availability can differ by model and market. |
| 2025 | H5000F and above | Use Samsung’s local table rather than the series name alone. |
| 2026 | U8000H and above | Regional model numbers and exceptions still apply. |
Those are the Singapore page’s general model-year thresholds, not a universal worldwide rule. Samsung explicitly warns that Q-Symphony “may not be supported” depending on the model or region. Read the complete local table at Samsung Singapore’s Q-Symphony support page before treating a series name as proof of compatibility.

Why the published compatibility ranges can look different
Regional product documents can state a narrower range for a particular soundbar. Samsung Australia’s 2026 HW-Q990H retailer specification sheet describes Q-Symphony compatibility with Samsung TVs from 2022 through 2026 and excludes The Serif and The Sero: HW-Q990H 2026 Australian specification sheet.
That 2022–2026 statement should not be merged with Singapore’s broader general table to create one worldwide list. It is a regional specification for the Q990H, while the Singapore document is a general support reference for Samsung TVs and audio devices. A TV that meets a general year threshold may still be excluded from the Q990H pairing in your market, and a model sold under a different regional number may have different support.
The safe rule is to check three items together: the complete TV model number, the Q990H model sold in your country and the local Samsung support or product page. Do not rely on a retailer’s abbreviated series name or on the TV’s purchase year.

How to check your TV before buying
- Find the complete television model code in the TV’s Settings menu, on its information screen or on the rear label. Record every suffix; regional variants can matter.
- Open Samsung’s support page for your country and locate the Q-Symphony compatibility table. Compare the full model code, not just a family name such as “QLED” or “Crystal UHD.”
- Open the local HW-Q990H product or specification page and verify that your TV’s year and model family are included for that soundbar generation.
- Confirm the physical connection you plan to use. For the widest TV-audio bandwidth, look for an HDMI port labelled ARC or eARC and use the TV maker’s recommended cable and settings.
- If the model is absent, treat Q-Symphony as unavailable even if ordinary HDMI audio works. You can still use the Q990H as a soundbar system.
Setting up Q-Symphony on a supported Samsung TV
Menu wording changes between TV generations, so the following path is an example from Samsung’s current instructions rather than a promise that every screen will look identical.
- Connect the Q990H to the TV’s ARC/eARC HDMI port. Connect the soundbar end to its HDMI output marked for TV ARC/eARC.
- On the Samsung TV, open Settings > All Settings > Sound > Q-Symphony Setup.
- Select the detected soundbar or speaker system and apply the choice. The TV should then offer the combined TV-speaker and soundbar mode when a compatible source is active.
- For eARC operation, enable HDMI-CEC (Samsung calls it Anynet+) and set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto on supported Samsung TVs. Use the HDMI port identified as eARC where your model provides one.
- Select the TV’s ARC/eARC audio source if the soundbar does not switch automatically. Samsung’s Canada instructions note that, for 2024-or-newer soundbars connected by HDMI or optical, the ARC/eARC source may need to be selected manually.
Q-Symphony selection and eARC transport are related but separate. A successful eARC connection can carry TV audio to the Q990H without enabling the synchronized TV-speaker mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUsing the HW-Q990H with a non-Samsung TV
Connect the soundbar to the television’s HDMI ARC/eARC port, choose the TV’s external receiver or soundbar output and follow the television manufacturer’s instructions for CEC, eARC and audio pass-through. The exact labels vary between brands and operating systems. The TV can send its audio to the Q990H, but its own speakers will not join the soundbar through Q-Symphony.

Samsung’s eARC explanation describes the standard’s purpose—carrying TV audio to a soundbar—at Samsung’s eARC support page. Use that information for the Q990H’s connection concept, then use your TV maker’s manual for port location and menu names. If your television has only optical output, the connection may still be possible where both devices support it, but optical does not provide eARC’s capabilities.
Which ownership path fits your goal?
| TV situation | Q-Symphony TV-speaker integration | Ordinary Q990H TV audio | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supported Samsung TV listed for your Q990H region | Available when the setup is completed and the compatible devices are selected. | Available through ARC/eARC or another supported input. | Exact model number, correct HDMI port and local menu path. |
| Samsung TV outside the local Q990H compatibility list | Not established; do not assume the general Samsung year threshold is enough. | Generally usable as a normal soundbar connection when the TV supports the chosen input. | TV audio formats, ARC/eARC support and regional product documentation. |
| Non-Samsung TV | Not available, because Q-Symphony requires compatible Samsung TV integration. | Usable through the TV’s supported ARC/eARC, optical or other input. | TV manufacturer’s output, CEC and pass-through settings. |
Legacy compatibility and limitations
Samsung says that when older, non-2026 sound devices are included, Q-Symphony can operate in a legacy compatibility mode and performance may be limited. That warning is especially relevant if you are combining the Q990H with another Samsung audio device rather than using the Q990H alone. It is another reason to check the complete device combination instead of assuming that two products carrying the Q-Symphony name have identical behavior.
Samsung also notes that model and regional support can change. A firmware update, a retailer listing and a local support table may not use the same terminology, so the local Samsung page for your exact model is the controlling reference for purchase decisions.

Troubleshooting a missing Q-Symphony option
The TV does not show Q-Symphony Setup
- Check that the television is a Samsung model listed for Q-Symphony with the HW-Q990H in your region.
- Verify that the soundbar is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port and powered on before opening the sound menu.
- Confirm that you are using the local instructions; menu paths differ by TV generation.
- If the TV is The Serif or The Sero, note the exclusion in Samsung Australia’s Q990H specification and verify whether your own market has the same restriction.
The TV connects, but there is no sound
- Set the TV’s sound output to its HDMI receiver, ARC/eARC or external sound device option.
- Enable HDMI-CEC/Anynet+ and set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto when those controls exist.
- Select the soundbar’s ARC/eARC source manually if the TV or soundbar does not change inputs automatically.
- Try the TV maker’s recommended HDMI cable and confirm that both ends are in the labelled ARC/eARC ports.
The soundbar works but Q-Symphony still will not activate
This usually means the normal audio path is functioning while the proprietary compatibility requirement is not met. Recheck the complete TV model, country-specific support page and Q990H regional specification rather than replacing a cable first.
What “getting the most” really means
For a buyer who wants the Q990H’s 11.1.4-channel surround system, subwoofer and rear speakers, a Samsung TV is not a prerequisite. A suitable non-Samsung TV with ARC/eARC can supply TV audio to the system.
For a buyer whose priority is synchronized output from the TV speakers and the soundbar, a compatible Samsung TV is essential. The feature is not unlocked by eARC alone, and the compatibility decision must be made against the exact model and regional documentation. Samsung’s official Q-Symphony definition and model tables support that distinction, while no independent evidence establishes a universal subjective sound-quality gain for every room.
