No—a racing wheel is not required to enjoy racing games on Steam. Whether you can use a keyboard or gamepad, and whether a wheel is worth buying, depends on the individual game and the kind of driving experience you want. Check the game’s Steam input-support labels and its hardware notes before you buy.
Start with the game’s input support
Steam’s controller-support label is a useful first check for gamepads, but support varies by title. Valve says games marked “Full Controller Support” can be launched and played using only a controller. “Partial Controller Support” means some tasks—such as setup or parts of the interface—may still require a keyboard or mouse. See Steam’s Big Picture mode guidance.

That label is about controllers; it is not a universal compatibility guarantee for racing wheels. For a wheel, look at the game’s own hardware documentation and confirm that it supports your specific model.

What the options mean in practice
| Input | What to check | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard | Confirm the game lists keyboard controls. Do not assume every title supports the same inputs. | Trying a game without buying another peripheral, when the game supports it. |
| Gamepad | Check the Steam controller-support label and whether you may need a keyboard or mouse for menus or setup. | Starting with a controller in a title that supports it. |
| Racing wheel | Check the game’s hardware notes and the compatibility of your exact wheel; Steam’s gamepad support documentation is not a wheel-compatibility list. | Players seeking a simulation-oriented experience in a game that supports their wheel. |
Valve’s Steam Input device documentation lists common gamepad types, including PlayStation, Xbox, Switch Pro, Steam Controller, and DirectInput gamepads. That does not mean every game supports each device, nor does it establish universal wheel support.

Some games recommend a wheel, but that is not the same as requiring one
RaceRoom Racing Experience
RaceRoom’s Steam support listing says, “To enhance your experience with the simulation aspect, we highly recommend using a steering wheel controller for optimal gameplay.” That is the game’s recommendation for a simulation-focused experience, not evidence that a wheel is mandatory for every player. The same listing says a keyboard or gamepad is required for VR support. Check the RaceRoom support listing for the game’s current notes.
Kart Racing Pro
Kart Racing Pro’s Steam page strongly recommends a wheel while stating that keyboards, joysticks, and gamepads are fully supported. It is another example of a recommendation rather than a blanket requirement—and it should not be treated as a rule for other racing games.

Check wheel setup separately from gamepad setup
Steam Input’s documented gamepad support does not guarantee that it can remap a wheel as a gamepad. Valve’s Steam Input gamepad-emulation guidance notes a limitation: Steam Input does not support remapping generic DirectInput devices when a game supports a racing wheel or flight stick. If you plan to use a wheel, check whether the game handles it natively and follow the game or wheel maker’s setup instructions.
- Look for the game’s current Steam controller-support label if you plan to use a gamepad.
- Check the game’s own hardware notes for wheel support and setup requirements.
- Confirm compatibility for your precise wheel model rather than relying on a general claim that “Steam supports wheels.”
- Check whether menus or setup require a keyboard or mouse, even if gameplay supports your chosen controller.
How to decide whether to buy a wheel
If you are exploring racing games, start with a keyboard or gamepad in a title that supports it. A wheel is an optional, dedicated purchase that may make sense if simulation-focused play is what you want and the games you intend to play support your hardware. The cited examples show that developers can recommend wheels while still supporting other inputs; they do not establish that wheels make players faster or that one control method is universally best.

Valve’s 2022 Steam Deck booklet expresses the broader choice this way: “One example is controls—we think you should be able to use whatever controller you want to, whether it’s for comfort, accessibility, or just personal preference.” The statement is Valve’s, not an individual speaker’s.
