Which consoles can play GTA 6?
Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the supported console families. That means an Xbox Series X or Series S is a genuine alternative to PS5; the game is not announced as PlayStation-exclusive.

Rockstar’s game page labels the title “Plays Best On” PS5. That is Rockstar’s own label, not an independent performance comparison or a statement that the Xbox versions cannot play the game. The official material reviewed does not provide a comparative benchmark or recommend Xbox Series X over Series S.

Do you need to upgrade from PS4 or Xbox One?
If you own only a PS4 or Xbox One, those consoles are not currently listed for GTA 6. To play on a platform Rockstar has announced, you will need access to a PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. Rockstar has not announced a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade path for the game.
If you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar’s platform list does not indicate that you need to buy another console. Choose based on the supported system you own or prefer. The official listing does not establish an objective performance ranking between the Xbox models.

Should you wait for a PC version?
Rockstar’s current official platform listing names PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, not PC. It does not confirm a PC version or release date, so there is no official PC launch date to rely on. If you would rather play on PC, wait for Rockstar to announce that platform rather than treating predictions as fact.

Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026 as the release date. Its November 6, 2025 announcement set that date after an earlier schedule; the current game page and support information reiterate it. Older dates, including the original “Coming 2025” wording, have been superseded.

Does the physical edition include a disc?
No. Rockstar says the boxed physical version contains a download code, not a disc. You will need to redeem the code and download the game. Rockstar advises buying from a retailer in the country associated with your platform account because PlayStation codes are region-sensitive; check compatibility before purchasing a code across markets.
Rockstar’s support article says digital preloading begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026. Physical copies are expected for shipping and pickup from that date to support preload. These are the currently listed plans, so check Rockstar’s support page near launch for any changes.
What editions are listed?
Rockstar’s support article lists Standard and Ultimate editions. Standard Edition owners may separately purchase an Ultimate Edition Upgrade. Rockstar says there is no physical Ultimate Edition; someone buying a boxed Standard Edition can purchase that upgrade through the relevant platform store after redeeming the game code. Bonus content and regional terms may change, so consult Rockstar’s current platform, editions, and versions page before buying.
Quick Recap
How to choose between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
- Already own one of the listed consoles: use the supported system you have, unless you have another reason to change platforms.
- Buying hardware for GTA 6: both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are officially listed. Consider your preferred ecosystem, existing library, and current console prices or bundles; Rockstar’s compatibility information does not compare value.
- Choosing a boxed copy: remember that the box contains a download code rather than a disc, and verify the code works with your account region.
- Looking for a PC or older-console release: wait for an official platform announcement; none is confirmed in the current listing.
