No—not automatically. You need a computer that meets the requirements of the specific first-person shooter and the performance level you want. A basic or older PC may run a lightweight competitive game, while a current blockbuster shooter at high settings, high refresh rates, or 4K can require a much stronger processor, graphics card, memory, and storage.
Before buying a “gaming PC,” identify the game, its official minimum and recommended tiers, your target resolution and frame rate, and the hardware you already own. Some shooters also run on consoles, so a PC is not the only route when your chosen title supports a console you already have.

What “gaming PC” means for an FPS player
In practical terms, a gaming PC is a desktop or laptop whose components are selected to run games reliably. The important parts are the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, operating-system version, and graphics features such as DirectX support. A discrete graphics card is the normal anchor for demanding modern shooters, but the term does not describe one universal performance level: an entry-level machine and a high-end 4K system are both sold as gaming PCs.
“Modern FPS” is not a single hardware profile. A competitive game designed to run on a wide range of computers can have dramatically lower requirements than a new, visually intensive release. Even within one title, the publisher may separate a launchable minimum from a 60-fps recommendation and a competitive or high-refresh target. Treat those labels as different goals, not as interchangeable marketing terms.

Start with the exact game and performance target
- Name the game. Open its current official PC-requirements page. Requirements can change with updates, and a page for one shooter cannot establish what another shooter needs.
- Choose the experience you want. “It launches,” “60 frames per second at high settings,” “144 Hz competitive play,” and “4K Ultra” are separate targets.
- Compare every listed component. Check the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, operating system, DirectX or other API requirements, and any security features.
- Check the platform list. If the title supports a console you already own, buying a PC may be unnecessary. If it does not, a console cannot substitute for it.
- Use the publisher’s wording carefully. Minimum specifications indicate compatibility, not a guaranteed frame rate on every system. Recommended tiers may be tied to a stated setting and frame-rate target; do not extend that promise to other resolutions or presets.
Example: VALORANT runs on unusually modest hardware
Riot Games Support’s “Minimum & Recommended PC Specs” page, dated May 21, 2026, publishes three performance labels for VALORANT. Riot states: “So long as your PC meets our minimum specifications, you’ll have what it takes to play.” That is Riot’s statement about VALORANT, not a guarantee for every FPS.
| VALORANT tier | Publisher’s target | Example CPU | Example graphics | Memory and other requirements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 30 FPS | Intel i3-540 or AMD Athlon 200GE | Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 220 | 4 GB RAM |
| Recommended | 60 FPS | Not stated in the cited tier summary | Not stated in the cited tier summary | Use Riot’s current page for the complete recommended list |
| High-end | 144 FPS | Intel i5-9400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | GTX 1050 Ti, Radeon R7 370, or Intel Arc A310 | Use Riot’s current page for the complete high-end list |
Riot lists Windows 10 64-bit (Build 19041 or newer) or Windows 11 64-bit, DirectX 11 support, and SSE 4.2 or AVX support. On Windows 11, TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot are required. Riot also says VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines, so those are not valid workarounds for a computer that falls short.
The figures above are Riot’s published tiers and component examples, not independent benchmark measurements. A system with one listed part may behave differently from another system because of cooling, background software, drivers, memory configuration, resolution, and in-game settings. Nevertheless, VALORANT demonstrates why a high-end gaming desktop is not a prerequisite for every modern shooter.

Example: Black Ops 6 has separate 60-FPS and high-end tiers
Activision’s Black Ops 6 support page, displayed with the date 07/02/25 (interpreted here as July 2, 2025), gives substantially heavier requirements. Activision says the specifications refer to desktop PCs. Laptop graphics cards that appear to match a desktop name can be different models and may not be supported, so compare the exact laptop GPU rather than relying on a similar label.
| Black Ops 6 tier | Publisher’s stated goal | CPU examples | GPU examples and video memory | RAM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Minimum compatibility tier | Ryzen 5 1400 or Core i5-6600 | Radeon RX 470, GeForce GTX 960, or Intel Arc A580; 2 GB video memory | 8 GB |
| Recommended | 60 FPS in most situations at high settings | Ryzen 5 1600X or Core i7-6700K | Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, or RTX 3060; 8 GB video memory | 12 GB |
| Competitive / 4K Ultra | Competitive high-FPS play or 4K Ultra | Ryzen 7 2700X or Core i7-8700K | Radeon RX 6800 XT, GeForce RTX 3080, or RTX 4070; 10 GB video memory | 16 GB |
Black Ops 6 requires Windows 10 64-bit, broadband internet, and a DirectX 12-compatible system. Activision lists 102 GB of SSD space at launch and says additional storage is required for Warzone; updates can also need more room. The 8 GB minimum, 12 GB recommended tier, and 16 GB competitive/4K tier are publisher specifications, not independent test results. Meeting the minimum does not establish that the game will deliver 60 FPS, high settings, or 4K.
Black Ops 6 is listed for Windows, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. That makes a supported console a documented alternative for this title, although platform availability is different for every shooter.

What is known about Counter-Strike 2 requirements
Valve’s official Steam listing identifies Counter-Strike 2 as a free-to-play multiplayer competitive FPS developed and published by Valve. The listing information considered here did not expose current PC system requirements. Do not infer its CPU, GPU, RAM, or frame-rate needs from VALORANT or Black Ops 6; check the current official listing or support documentation before deciding whether an existing PC is suitable.
How to check your current computer
- Record the exact hardware. Write down the CPU model, graphics processor model, installed RAM, and free storage. On a laptop, record the complete GPU model, including whether it is a mobile variant.
- Verify the operating system. Confirm the Windows edition, 64-bit status, and build number. Requirements that name Windows 11 features such as TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot need to be checked in firmware and Windows security information, not assumed from the operating-system name alone.
- Compare the GPU first for visual targets. Match the exact model against the game’s minimum, recommended, or competitive tier. A product family name alone is insufficient when mobile and desktop versions differ.
- Compare the CPU and RAM. A graphics card that meets a tier cannot compensate for a processor or memory configuration below the same tier. Black Ops 6, for example, lists different CPU and RAM levels for minimum, recommended, and competitive/4K play.
- Check storage and connectivity. Confirm enough SSD space for the installed game, patches, and any required companion content. Black Ops 6 also requires broadband internet, and its launch storage figure excludes additional Warzone space.
- Match the test to your goal. If you want 144-Hz competitive play, compare with a 144-FPS or competitive tier, not a 30-FPS minimum. If you want 4K Ultra, use a tier explicitly written for 4K Ultra.
- Use cautious expectations. Publisher tiers are guidance under stated conditions. They do not predict identical results for every case, especially when resolution, settings, thermals, background applications, or future updates differ.
Do you need a dedicated graphics card?
Not for every shooter. VALORANT’s listed minimum examples include Intel HD 4000 graphics, showing that a relatively modest graphics solution can be within a publisher’s minimum tier for that game. However, Black Ops 6’s published tiers call for considerably more capable Radeon, GeForce, or Intel Arc GPUs and specify video-memory amounts for each level.
The useful question is not “Is integrated graphics always enough?” or “Does every FPS require a discrete GPU?” It is “What graphics processor does this game’s target tier require at my chosen resolution and settings?” For a visually demanding release, a desktop with a dedicated graphics card is the sensible category to investigate; for a lightweight competitive title, an existing computer may already qualify.

PC versus console: when a gaming PC is optional
Check the title’s supported platforms before pricing a new computer. Activision lists Black Ops 6 on Windows, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4, so an owner of one of those consoles has another way to play. This example does not establish that every current FPS is available on consoles, nor that console and PC performance are directly equivalent.
PC remains the relevant route when the game is PC-only, when you need PC-specific controls or settings, or when your preferred platform is not supported. Compare the total cost of the platform you would actually use, including hardware, storage, internet requirements, and any existing ownership, rather than treating “gaming PC” as an automatic purchase.

Cloud play can sound like a way to avoid buying hardware, but support is title-specific. Riot explicitly says VALORANT does not support cloud gaming or virtual machines. That rule rules out those approaches for VALORANT; it should not be generalized to every shooter without a statement from that game’s publisher.
When to upgrade, replace, or keep your current PC
Keep the current PC
- Its exact CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system, and required graphics features meet the chosen game’s target tier.
- You accept the resolution, settings, and frame-rate goal attached to that tier.
- There is enough SSD capacity for the game and expected updates.
Consider a targeted upgrade
- One component misses the chosen tier while the rest of the system is suitable.
- You have confirmed the desktop’s power supply, case space, cooling, motherboard compatibility, and laptop upgrade limits before buying a part.
- You are solving a specific shortfall, such as insufficient RAM or graphics capability, rather than assuming any newer part will improve every problem.
Consider a different platform or complete system
- The existing computer misses several core requirements, including the operating system or graphics API.
- The game’s competitive or 4K tier is far above the machine’s capability.
- A supported console you already own can run the chosen title and meets your control and performance expectations.
Do not label a system “future-proof” without a budget, a specific game list, and a performance target. Official requirements can change, and a component that satisfies one shooter may be inadequate for another.
Common mistakes that lead to disappointing FPS performance
- Using the minimum tier as a 60-FPS promise. A minimum specification is a compatibility floor unless the publisher attaches a particular performance target to it.
- Comparing names instead of exact models. Laptop and desktop GPUs with similar names can differ substantially; Activision specifically warns about this issue.
- Ignoring storage. Large installations and updates can consume more space than the launch figure, and optional or related content may need additional room.
- Assuming a console listing applies to all shooters. Platform support must be confirmed for the exact game.
- Ignoring security and firmware requirements. VALORANT on Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot in addition to the operating-system version.
- Expecting an unsupported workaround to solve compatibility. VALORANT’s explicit cloud-gaming and virtual-machine restriction means those options are not suitable for that title.
If the game runs poorly despite meeting the listed tier
First confirm that the system is actually using the intended GPU and that the game is configured for the resolution and settings associated with the requirement you selected. Lowering video options can increase FPS in some situations, but the result depends on the game and hardware; it is not a guaranteed substitute for meeting a higher tier. Recheck free storage, operating-system features, and the exact component models, then consult the publisher’s current support page for changes or known compatibility notes. Do not treat an online claim about someone else’s frame rate as a benchmark for your machine.
Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Write down the one or two shooters you actually plan to play.
- Copy the current official minimum, recommended, and high-refresh or 4K requirements for each.
- Set a target such as 60 FPS at high settings or 144 FPS at a competitive preset.
- Compare exact CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, operating-system, and API requirements with the candidate PC.
- Check laptop-versus-desktop model differences and required security features.
- Confirm whether a console you own supports the game.
- Buy only after the complete system—not a single headline component—matches the target tier.
