A Dolby Atmos television and eARC are necessary only when you own the Naim Mu-so Utopia and want its full multichannel Atmos capability from TV sources. Most other Naim all-in-one and connected systems are designed for two-channel stereo TV audio, where the correct television output is PCM, LPCM, or Stereo—not Dolby Digital, Surround, or Auto.
The first decision is therefore your Naim model and your listening goal. Choose the Utopia eARC path for immersive film, concert, and gaming sound; use ARC, optical, or the appropriate stereo input for ordinary TV playback on legacy Mu-so and Uniti systems.

What the TV connection actually does
HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) sends sound from a television back to an audio system through an HDMI cable. It is useful for TV apps, broadcast channels, game consoles routed through the television, and devices connected to the TV. Optical performs a similar stereo-source role through a separate digital cable.
HDMI eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) is the higher-capacity version. It is the connection used when a compatible television must send multichannel formats such as Dolby Atmos to a system that can decode them. A television having an “Atmos” badge does not, by itself, make every connected audio system an Atmos system: the receiver, input, software, speaker layout, TV output mode, and cable must all support the format.

For Naim products, the decisive distinction is between the Mu-so Utopia, which Naim specifies for Dolby Atmos and HDMI eARC, and the stereo-focused models whose TV guidance calls for two-channel PCM/LPCM/stereo.
Which Naim models need Atmos or eARC?
| Naim path | Atmos/eARC requirement | TV connection and setting | What it is best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mu-so Utopia | Required for the full Atmos experience. Naim lists Dolby Atmos, multichannel Dolby formats, and one HDMI eARC input. | Connect the TV’s eARC socket to the Utopia HDMI eARC input. Use a compatible high-speed HDMI cable and select a TV output mode that the Utopia supports. | Immersive television, films, concerts, and gaming in a single integrated system. |
| Mu-so 2nd Generation | Not required for its documented TV use. Dolby Atmos decoding is not the basis of its stereo TV connection. | Use HDMI ARC or optical. Set the TV to PCM, LPCM, or Stereo; avoid Dolby, Surround, and Auto output modes. | One-box stereo TV improvement plus music streaming. |
| Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation | Not an Atmos requirement in Naim’s TV guidance. | Use the optical input and configure the TV for two-channel PCM/LPCM/stereo. | Compact music playback and modest TV enhancement, rather than a wide soundbar-style presentation. |
| Uniti Atom, Star, and Nova | Not required for the documented stereo TV path. | Most listed models provide HDMI ARC; some earlier Atom configurations differ. Optical may also be available. The TV should output PCM/LPCM/stereo. | Streaming amplification and TV-source integration with separate passive speakers. |
The Uniti products are not integrated soundbars: they need separate passive speakers. That speaker requirement is independent of whether the television has Atmos or eARC.
When the Mu-so Utopia makes eARC worthwhile
Naim’s current Mu-so Utopia specification lists Dolby Atmos compatibility, multichannel Dolby formats, and an HDMI eARC input. The same specification lists 720 watts of total power, 15 speaker drivers, and a maximum stated Dolby Digital AC4 configuration of 7.1.4 channels. Those figures describe the product’s design capability; they do not mean every TV source will deliver 7.1.4 audio or that every room will produce a discrete home-cinema speaker layout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo use the Atmos path, the television must have an eARC output, the Utopia must be connected to that eARC socket, and the TV must be able to pass the desired Atmos format from its internal apps or connected sources. If the TV has only ordinary ARC, you can still use the connection for compatible audio, but you should not treat regular ARC as the complete Utopia eARC/Atmos route.

What “Atmos TV” means in this setup
An Atmos-capable TV normally means that the television can decode or pass Dolby Atmos from supported apps or inputs. For the Utopia, the important hardware detail is an available HDMI eARC output, not merely an Atmos logo in the TV’s marketing. Check the television’s manual for its eARC socket and for the formats it can output from built-in apps, HDMI devices, and broadcast tuners; those capabilities can differ by source.
What you still get without eARC
A Utopia connected through an ordinary compatible path can still provide useful TV sound, but the connection may be limited to the formats negotiated by the TV and audio system. If immersive Atmos is the objective, use the television’s eARC port and the Utopia’s HDMI eARC input rather than assuming that any HDMI socket will carry the same signal.
Why older Naim systems often go silent on Dolby or Auto
Naim states that its stereo-oriented devices are designed to decode two-channel stereo signals only. Many televisions default to multichannel Dolby Digital or an automatic surround mode. When such a signal reaches a two-channel Naim input, the result can be silence, clicking, distortion, or other unexpected behavior.
The fix is normally in the television’s audio menu:

- Open Settings, then look for a menu named Sound, Audio output, Digital audio output, or a similar label.
- Set the digital output format to PCM, LPCM, or Stereo. Manufacturers use different wording, so choose the two-channel option rather than a surround or bitstream option.
- Turn off output modes labelled Auto, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Bitstream, Pass-through, or Surround when using a legacy stereo Naim device, unless Naim’s documentation for your exact model explicitly says otherwise.
- Start playback from a TV app or channel and confirm that sound is present before changing any other setting.
This setting does not reduce a stereo Naim system to a faulty state; it matches the television’s output to the decoder that the system was designed to use.
How to connect each common Naim path
Mu-so Utopia for Dolby Atmos
- Identify the television’s HDMI socket labelled eARC. Do not assume that every HDMI socket supports return audio.
- Connect that socket directly to the Mu-so Utopia’s HDMI eARC input. Naim’s troubleshooting guidance favors a direct connection rather than routing the signal through an unnecessary intermediary.
- Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable. Dolby’s eARC connection guidance identifies HDMI 2.1 as necessary for eARC setups.
- In the TV menu, enable eARC if it is a separate option. Enable HDMI-CEC as well; the control feature may have a manufacturer-specific name.
- Choose the TV’s Dolby Atmos or compatible multichannel output mode only after the direct connection is working. Test a known Atmos source, then verify that the TV reports the intended format.
- If the TV offers separate choices for internal apps and HDMI inputs, configure each source independently. A setting that works for a streaming app may not apply to a game console or disc player.
The television and source still determine whether Atmos is actually available. A stereo broadcast, a non-Atmos stream, or a source that the TV downmixes will not become Atmos merely because the Utopia is connected by eARC.
Mu-so 2nd Generation over HDMI ARC
- Connect the TV’s HDMI socket marked ARC to the Mu-so’s HDMI ARC input.
- Enable HDMI-CEC in the TV. CEC names vary by manufacturer, but it is the control protocol that lets the TV and audio system coordinate power and volume.
- Set digital audio output to PCM, LPCM, or Stereo.
- Select the Mu-so’s TV/HDMI input and test a channel or app.
Regular ARC is sufficient for this documented stereo use. You do not need to replace the television with an Atmos model simply to improve ordinary two-channel TV sound.

Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation over optical
- Run an optical cable from the TV’s optical output to the Qb’s optical input.
- Choose PCM, LPCM, or Stereo in the TV’s digital audio settings.
- Select the Qb optical source and check that the TV is not still sending Dolby or an automatic multichannel stream.
The Qb’s compact enclosure is better treated as a small music system with TV playback than as a wide, Atmos-style soundbar.

Uniti Atom, Star, or Nova
- Confirm that your specific unit has HDMI ARC; Naim’s model lineup and earlier Atom variants do not all have identical input arrangements.
- Connect the TV directly to the ARC input, or use optical where available.
- Attach the required passive speakers and select the TV input on the Uniti system.
- Set the television to PCM, LPCM, or Stereo and test playback.
The Uniti’s role is a streaming amplifier and source hub. The passive speakers, their placement, and the room determine the stereo presentation; an Atmos TV is not a prerequisite for this connection.

For a legacy Naim stereo connection, use the cable type and input specified for the model. Naim’s ARC troubleshooting advice calls for an HDMI cable rated version 1.4 or higher when investigating ARC problems. Optical is an alternative on models that provide that input.
For a Mu-so Utopia Atmos installation, use the TV’s eARC socket and a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable. The cable should be connected directly between the TV and Utopia. A cable can be physically compatible yet fail to deliver the expected result if it is damaged, uncertified, excessively long for the installation, or connected to a non-eARC socket.

ARC and eARC troubleshooting checklist
No sound at all
- Confirm that the cable is in the TV socket labelled ARC or eARC, not an ordinary HDMI input.
- Confirm that the Naim system is set to the matching HDMI/TV source.
- Set the TV output to PCM, LPCM, or Stereo first. This is the most important check for legacy two-channel models.
- Power off both devices, disconnect the HDMI cable, reconnect it directly, then power the TV on before the Naim system so the devices can renegotiate the connection.
Sound works but clicks, distorts, or cuts out
- Disable Auto, Dolby, Surround, and bitstream output on a stereo-oriented Naim device.
- Try a different HDMI cable rated at least HDMI 1.4 for ARC troubleshooting.
- Remove an AV receiver, switch, soundbar, or HDMI adapter from between the TV and Naim system.
- Check that HDMI-CEC is enabled. The label differs among TV manufacturers.
Atmos is not appearing on a Mu-so Utopia
- Verify that both ends use eARC-capable sockets: the TV’s eARC port and the Utopia HDMI eARC input.
- Replace the cable with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable.
- Check whether the program or game actually provides Atmos and whether the TV passes that format from the selected source.
- Review separate TV settings for built-in apps and HDMI inputs; one source may be configured for PCM while another is configured for multichannel output.
The TV remote does not control volume or power
Check HDMI-CEC on both devices, then look for the television maker’s proprietary CEC name. ARC audio can work while CEC control is disabled, so this symptom does not necessarily indicate a failed audio connection.
Choosing the right path by listening goal
| Your priority | Recommended connection | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clearer everyday TV dialogue and music on a Mu-so 2nd Generation | HDMI ARC or optical with PCM/LPCM/Stereo | Matches the system’s two-channel decoding and avoids multichannel incompatibility. |
| Compact TV playback on a Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation | Optical with PCM/LPCM/Stereo | Uses the documented digital input without requiring Atmos hardware. |
| Streaming amplifier plus passive speakers | ARC or optical on a compatible Uniti model, with PCM/LPCM/Stereo | Provides a stereo TV source while preserving the Uniti’s amplifier role. |
| Immersive film, concert, or gaming audio on Mu-so Utopia | TV eARC to Utopia HDMI eARC, with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable | Uses the Utopia’s documented Dolby Atmos and multichannel capability. |
Bottom line for a purchase or upgrade decision
Do not begin by shopping for an Atmos television. Begin by reading the model name on the Naim system and deciding whether you want stereo TV sound or immersive multichannel playback.
- If you own a Mu-so Utopia and want Atmos, choose a TV with eARC and configure a direct eARC connection.
- If you own a Mu-so 2nd Generation, Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation, or a stereo-oriented Uniti path, use ARC or optical where available and select PCM, LPCM, or Stereo.
- If a legacy system is silent on Auto or Dolby, change the TV output format before replacing cables or hardware.
- If you use a Uniti Atom, Star, or Nova, budget for and position separate passive speakers; the television’s Atmos badge does not replace them.
Product specifications, firmware behavior, and TV menu labels can change. Check the current manual for the exact Naim model and television before purchase, especially when relying on a specific Atmos format or an earlier Uniti variant’s input list.
