No. A 4K TV is not required to use a PS5. The console supports 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 2160p (4K UHD), and detects the connected screen’s capabilities to select the highest supported resolution. Choose 4K only if you want 4K output; a compatible 1080p or 1440p display can also work.
Will a PS5 work on a 1080p TV?
Yes. Sony lists 1080p among the PS5’s supported output resolutions, along with 720p, 1080i and 2160p (4K UHD). The console adapts to the connected screen, so a 4K display is an option rather than a requirement. Sony’s PS5 FAQ states that the console does not require a 4K TV.

How to check or change PS5 resolution
Use the console’s video-output settings to see the active signal and choose a resolution the connected display supports.

- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Check Current Video Output Signal and the HDMI-device information to see what the connected screen reports.
- For automatic selection, set Resolution to Automatic. Sony says this selects the highest resolution supported by the TV.
- To select a supported output yourself, choose it under Resolution. For 4K, select 2160p; for a supported 1440p screen, choose Test 1440p Output, then set the resolution to 1440p.

Can you use a 1440p monitor with PS5?
Yes, if the display is compatible. PS5 supports 1440p output, and the console offers a Test 1440p Output option. Sony says compatible displays can be tested for SDR or HDR at 60 Hz or 120 Hz, as well as VRR. A successful test helps establish whether those output features work with that particular screen.
Is 4K the same as 120 Hz?
No. Resolution describes the image detail; refresh rate describes how often the display can update the image. PS5 supports 4K at 120 Hz, but getting that combination depends on the display, the correct HDMI port, the cable and settings, and whether the game supports the desired mode. A 4K label alone does not confirm 120 Hz support.

When comparing displays, check the specifications for the features you actually want:
- Resolution: 1080p, 1440p or 4K.
- Refresh rate: 60 Hz or 120 Hz.
- HDMI port capabilities, including whether the needed port supports the target resolution and refresh rate.
- HDR, VRR and ALLM support, if you want those features. Their availability and results vary by display and compatible game.
VRR, HDR and ALLM are not prerequisites for ordinary PS5 use. Sony’s display and resolution guidance treats these capabilities as dependent on the connected TV and supported games.

Do you need HDMI 2.1 or a new cable?
You do not need to buy a new cable just to use a PS5. Sony recommends the cable included with the console and notes that older HDMI cables can also be used. For a specific 4K 120 Hz setup, however, the cable, display port and any equipment between the console and display must support the desired signal. Sony recommends the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz when troubleshooting that mode.
If 4K at 120 Hz is not working, Sony recommends checking the display’s advertised capability, updating its firmware, connecting the console directly or through compatible intermediary equipment, using the correct HDMI port, and confirming the console’s resolution settings. Which display should you choose?
Pick based on the output you want and the screen you already own—not on 4K as a supposed PS5 requirement. A 1080p screen covers supported 1080p output; a compatible 1440p monitor is another option; and a 4K display is needed when your goal is 4K output. If 120 Hz, HDR, VRR or ALLM matter to you, verify those specifications separately rather than assuming they come with a 4K label.
