Do You Need 54 Domains? How to Manage and Renew a Large Domain Portfolio

No universal rule says 54 domains is too many—or that you need that many. Treat the count as a prompt to review every name: identify its purpose and owner, check its renewal cost and service dependencies, and record when someone will decide whether to keep it. A well-maintained inventory matters more than the portfolio’s size.

How to decide whether you need each domain

Assess names individually rather than using 54 as a cutoff. A domain may support a current business, protect a brand, redirect traffic, or serve another defined purpose. For every name, record:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Purpose: What current business or defensive reason supports keeping it?
  • Accountability: Who owns the decision to renew or retire it?
  • Cost: What is its actual renewal price, including any premium-name treatment?
  • Dependencies: What websites, email, DNS, certificates, redirects, or third-party accounts rely on it?
  • Decision date: When will the owner review it next?

Keep a name when an accountable owner can identify a current reason to retain it. If there is no clear reason, review it for retirement—but check its dependencies first. A domain that looks unused may still support email, a redirect, a certificate, or an account verification flow.

Build one reliable domain inventory

Keep a single inventory outside any one registrar account, and reconcile it against registrar records. Include these fields for each domain:

Group the inventory by registrar and renewal month so upcoming decisions can be handled in batches. Track deadlines in an independent calendar or task system, verify auto-renew settings and payment methods, and check that the registrar’s account contact details are current.

How to choose a registrar setup

You can keep the portfolio at one registrar, split it across several, or move selected names. No arrangement is universally safer or cheaper: consolidation can simplify administration, while multiple accounts can add operational work. Compare the practical trade-offs against your needs.

What to compare Questions to ask
Portfolio management Can you edit or renew names in bulk, and export a usable inventory?
Access and security Can you assign appropriate user roles, protect accounts, and recover access reliably?
Price visibility Are standard renewal, premium-name, post-expiration, and restore prices clear for each TLD?
Alerts and contacts Can you control alerts and keep the notice recipient current?
Transfers and support Can you confirm transfer eligibility and timing, and reach support through a clear process?
Service dependencies Can you distinguish registration from DNS hosting and other services that may be managed elsewhere?

These are evaluation criteria, not claims about features offered by any particular registrar. Compare actual prices for the TLDs and names you hold; a first-year registration offer does not establish the renewal cost.

Understand renewal reminders, expiration, and recovery

ICANN’s ERRP registrant guidance says registrars must send at least two renewal reminders, approximately one month and one week before expiration. If a registrar expires and deletes a name, it must send an additional notice within five days with restoration instructions. These notices go to the official registrant email address, so an outdated address can undermine this safety net.

Recovery periods are not a reliable extension of your deadline. ICANN describes a possible registrar auto-renew grace period of 1–45 days, if offered; fees and other terms depend on the registrar, and a name may be at risk under those terms. After deletion, registries for generic TLDs covered by ERRP must provide a 30-day Redemption Grace Period. Restoring a name may incur a fee. ICANN also warns that DNS service may be disrupted for up to eight days before deletion and during the redemption period. These are policy protections and conditional windows, not a promise of free recovery or uninterrupted service.

Ask for the actual renewal, post-expiration renewal, and redemption or restore charge for each relevant TLD. ICANN says registrars must make these fees reasonably available. Check whether a name is premium, since its price treatment may differ; do not infer a renewal price from its initial registration offer.

What domain fee figures do—and do not—tell you

Official fee figures can help explain costs in the registration chain, but they are not substitutes for a retail quote from your registrar.

Figure Scope
$0.20 per qualifying annual increment ICANN’s 21 July 2025 FY2026 announcement describes this as a registrar-level fee for qualifying add, renew, or transfer transactions—not a retail price for a domain.
$10.67 per annual increment, comprising a $9.92 service fee and $0.75 ICANN fee The .net Registry Agreement version dated 1 July 2023 sets this registry-to-registrar maximum. It is not a general retail renewal price.

Use the figures only in their stated contexts. Your registrar’s quoted price for a particular name and transaction is the relevant number for a renewal decision.

How to consolidate or transfer domains safely

Moving names can simplify administration, but a bulk transfer is a project to plan—not a shortcut to assume will work identically for every domain. ICANN’s Domain Name Transfers resource describes a standardized process for transfers between ICANN-accredited registrars. The resource lists a policy update dated 21 February 2024, with implementation permitted from 21 August 2024 and required by 21 August 2025. Before acting, check the live policy and the instructions from both registrars.

  1. Map the names and their dependencies. Check which services rely on each domain and confirm where DNS is hosted.
  2. Check eligibility and timing name by name. Verify the current transfer rules, any applicable deadline, and the receiving registrar’s requirements.
  3. Compare costs and renewal effects. Confirm transfer and renewal pricing for each TLD and whether a transfer changes the renewal date or term.
  4. Plan a limited test if appropriate. Consider moving a small, low-risk subset before a larger batch.
  5. Verify services after changes. Confirm DNS, email, web hosting, certificates, and redirects are working; changing registrar alone does not establish that these services have migrated.

ICANN says the Transfer Policy aims to provide a straightforward procedure for domain holders moving names between accredited registrars. That does not remove the need to confirm current eligibility, timing, and registrar-specific steps for each name.

A practical review schedule

As an operational practice—not an ICANN requirement—review the portfolio annually and again before each renewal window. For each review, reconcile the inventory, confirm notice contacts and payment methods, check upcoming prices, and ask each owner to renew, retire, or revisit their names by a recorded date. That routine makes the renewal decision visible before an expiration notice becomes urgent.
