Achievements and Gamerscore earned during an Xbox Free Play Days event stay with your Xbox account if you later purchase the game or another eligible edition. Xbox’s published event guidance says players can continue playing while keeping the Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event.
Your save is different. Xbox does not promise that every game will transfer every checkpoint, unlock, or local save automatically. Carry-over depends on the title’s save design, connected-storage implementation, edition, platform, and region. Use the same Xbox account, synchronize the game while you are online, and check the publisher’s support information before assuming you can resume at exactly the same point.

What Free Play Days access means
Free Play Days gives eligible Game Pass members temporary access to selected Xbox games for a limited event period. The lineup and eligibility change from one event to another, so the game’s event listing is the authority for the dates and membership requirements.
Microsoft Game Development Kit documentation describes Free Play Days access as a temporary full license rather than a conventional trial with a fixed number of minutes or a restricted level. That distinction explains why the game can behave like the full product during the event while still becoming unavailable when the event ends. When the temporary license expires, you need ownership or another active entitlement to launch it again.

Availability, editions, promotional discounts, and supported platforms can differ by title and region. A purchase that looks related in the store is not automatically interchangeable with the version used during the event.
What happens to achievements and Gamerscore?
Achievements unlocked during Free Play Days are recorded on your Xbox profile in the same way as other Xbox achievements. Xbox Wire’s September 10, 2026 event guidance states: “Purchase the game and other editions at a limited time discount and continue playing while keeping your Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event!”
That means buying the game after the event does not reset the achievements you already earned. The Gamerscore belongs to the account, not to a temporary license or a particular installation. You should still use the same Xbox account when you buy and play the game; signing into a different account will show that account’s separate achievement history.
Achievement synchronization can take a short time. If an achievement appears in the in-game notification but not yet on your profile, stay connected, return to the dashboard, and allow the console or Xbox app to finish syncing before the event expires. Do not interpret a delayed profile update as evidence that the achievement was deleted.

Why save transfer is not guaranteed
A save file is controlled by the game’s own save system. The Game Development Kit documentation explains that moving progress from Free Play Days into a purchased copy depends on how the title implements saving and connected storage. Xbox’s consumer announcement guarantees the retention of Gamerscore and achievements, but it does not make the same universal promise for every save, checkpoint, item, or unlock.
Connected storage and cloud synchronization
Many Xbox games synchronize progress through connected storage when you are online. Others may use a title-specific account, separate profiles, local-only data, or different rules for cross-generation versions. The practical result is that two games in the same Free Play Days event can behave differently: one may resume at the last checkpoint, while another may require a new game or restore only part of the progress.
Edition and platform boundaries
A save can be tied to a particular Xbox title ID, edition, platform family, or publisher account. A purchase labelled “deluxe,” “ultimate,” or “complete” may share progress with the event version, but the store label alone is not proof. Cross-generation upgrades and versions for different platforms can also have separate save rules.
Local progress that never synchronized
If the console was offline or the game was closed before its latest save finished uploading, the newest progress may exist only on that device. Once the temporary license ends, you may not be able to reopen the game to trigger another synchronization. This is why the final online save is the most important preparation step.

How to protect your progress before the event ends
- Confirm the account. Write down the Microsoft/Xbox account currently signed in and use that account for any later purchase. Do not switch profiles while finishing the event.
- Finish a normal save inside the game. Reach a safe point, use the game’s save command if it has one, and wait for the save indicator to complete. Avoid powering off during an autosave.
- Go online. Connect the console or PC to the internet and leave the game open long enough for connected storage to synchronize. If the game displays a sync message, wait for it to finish rather than choosing an offline or local-only option.
- Close and reopen the game once. Relaunching while online can confirm that the latest checkpoint is available to the account. If the game asks which data to use, select the newest synchronized data and avoid overwriting it with an older local copy.
- Check the publisher’s support page. Look for statements about cloud saves, cross-generation play, cross-edition upgrades, PC-to-console progress, and required publisher accounts. These rules are title-specific and can change with an update.
- Record the exact version. Note the game name, platform, edition, and region shown in the store. Use those details when selecting a purchase so you do not accidentally buy a separate product with a different save system.
- Capture evidence of your state. A screenshot of the in-game profile, chapter, level, or inventory is useful for troubleshooting. It cannot create a missing save, but it gives the publisher concrete information if the purchased version does not recognize your progress.
What happens when the event ends?
When the Free Play Days license expires, the game can stop launching unless you own it or have another entitlement that includes it. The installation may remain on the console; losing access is not the same as the game being automatically uninstalled. A later purchase can reactivate the installed copy if the edition and platform are compatible.
If you try to launch after the deadline without an entitlement, you may see a purchase prompt or a message that the account does not have a license. That message concerns access, not necessarily the existence of your saved data. Whether the purchased version can read that data still depends on the title’s implementation and synchronization state.
If you buy before the event ends
Buying during the event gives you a chance to test the purchased entitlement while the temporary access window is still open. After the transaction completes, confirm that the store shows the owned edition, launch the game with the same account, and check the continue/load menu. Keep the console online while the license refreshes.

You can purchase later if the game remains available in your region, but the event discount may have ended. Install or launch the purchased edition with the original account and allow any synchronization prompt to complete. If the game offers separate local and cloud choices, do not replace a newer cloud save with an older local file.

Comparing ways to keep playing
The best choice depends on the exact title, platform and region. Xbox states that discounts and edition availability vary by game and region, so prices and offers must be checked in the store for your account.

Checks that prevent the most common mistakes
Same account
Achievements are attached to the Xbox profile that earned them, and save access commonly depends on that account or a linked publisher account. Buying on another profile can leave you looking at an empty achievement list or a new save slot even though the original data still exists under the first profile.
Same title and platform family
Compare the exact product name, console generation, and platform shown in the store. A backward-compatible version, a remaster, a PC edition, and a cloud-streaming listing may use different identifiers or save services. Treat compatibility as something to verify, not something implied by similar artwork.

Regional editions can have different product identifiers, content ratings, language packs, or publishing arrangements. Xbox specifically warns that title availability and discounts vary by region. Before importing a disc or buying from a different storefront, check whether the game’s support information says saves can be used across those regions.

Publisher account requirements
Some games associate progress with a publisher account in addition to the Xbox account. If the event version asked you to sign in or link an account, use that same login after purchase. Do not unlink it while troubleshooting unless the publisher explicitly instructs you to do so.
Troubleshooting when the purchased copy starts from the beginning
The game shows no save at all
Quit the game completely, verify that you are online, and restart the console or PC. Sign in to the original Xbox account, launch the same edition, and wait for any synchronization process to finish. If the game has a manual “manage saved data” screen, avoid deleting local or cloud files while investigating.
Two versions appear in the library
Check the product details for platform and edition before launching. Install the version that matches the Free Play Days build. If both versions are compatible according to the publisher, launch each once while online and look for the synchronized profile; do not create a new save over the older one until you know which file is current.

This can happen because achievements and saves use different systems. Confirm that the achievement notification is visible on the original Xbox profile, then contact the game publisher with the title, edition, platform, account type, and the time of your last successful sync. Xbox’s achievement retention guidance does not establish that every game’s save data is transferable.
The console asks whether to use local or cloud data
Choose the copy that reflects the latest session, based on the timestamp and the progress you recorded before the event ended. If you cannot identify the newest file, stop rather than selecting an option that says it will overwrite the other copy, and ask the publisher for guidance.
What Xbox’s guidance does and does not establish
The dated Xbox Wire statement is clear about Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event: purchasing the game or another edition lets you continue while keeping them. It is not a blanket promise that every checkpoint, unlock, save slot, or local file will migrate. Microsoft’s development documentation places that responsibility on the individual title’s save implementation and connected-storage behavior.
For that reason, the safest expectation is precise: your account-level achievement record should remain, while your playable progress is transferable only when the game’s own systems support it and the purchased entitlement matches the original version. Verify those conditions before the event deadline rather than relying on the word “trial” or on a similar-looking store listing.
