Do Wireless Chargers Work Through Phone Cases? What Actually Blocks Charging

Usually, yes. Most thin plastic, silicone, TPU, or leather phone cases allow Qi wireless charging to work without removing the case. Problems are more likely with thick, metal, battery, wallet-style, or accessory-heavy cases, and when the phone is poorly aligned on the charging pad.

There is no universal case-thickness limit for every phone and charger. Apple recommends removing a thick, metal, or battery case when an iPhone will not charge or charges slowly, while Samsung gives a 5 mm maximum for non-Samsung Galaxy cases in its own troubleshooting guidance. That Samsung figure is brand-specific advice, not a general wireless-charging standard.

How wireless charging works through a case

Wireless charging uses electromagnetic induction. A coil in the charging pad creates an alternating magnetic field, and a matching coil inside the phone converts that field into electrical power for the battery. A normal nonconductive case sits between the two coils, increasing the distance slightly but usually not blocking the field.

Qi is an open, universal wireless-charging standard, according to Apple Support. Phones and chargers still need to support compatible Qi features, and the physical distance between their coils affects how reliably and quickly power transfers. The case is therefore only one part of the system: the phone model, charger output, alignment, case construction, and attached accessories all matter.

Wireless charging and magnetic attachment are separate capabilities. A phone may charge on a flat pad without snapping into place magnetically. Magnetic alignment can make positioning easier, but a phone does not automatically gain magnetic attachment just because it can charge wirelessly.

Which phone cases usually work?

Thin plastic, TPU, silicone, and leather cases

Ordinary cases made from nonconductive materials generally work through a Qi charging pad. Slim polycarbonate, TPU, silicone, and leather covers are common examples. If the case has no metal insert and does not create excessive distance between the phone and pad, leaving it on is normally reasonable.

Charging may still be slower than with the bare phone if the case is unusually thick or the charger has limited output. A case that works on one pad may behave differently on another because coil size, output, and alignment tolerance vary.

Cases with raised edges or camera protection

Raised bezels around the screen or camera usually do not matter by themselves. The relevant question is how much material lies directly between the phone’s charging coil and the pad. A bulky back panel, layered construction, or embedded accessory is more important than a raised front edge.

Model-specific compatibility

Wireless charging is not present on every phone. Confirm that the exact phone model supports Qi before treating the case as the problem. A compatible case cannot add wireless charging to a phone that lacks the required receiver coil.

Cases and accessories that can stop or slow charging

Thick cases

More distance between the phone and pad weakens the coupling between their coils. Apple tells users to try removing a thick case if an iPhone is not charging or is charging slowly. The same diagnostic test is useful on other phones, but the acceptable thickness depends on the particular device and charger.

Metal cases and conductive inserts

Metal can interfere with the charging field and may prevent charging. Metal plates used for car mounts, metal kickstands, ring holders, and other conductive inserts are common causes of failure. Samsung specifically warns users not to place conductive materials, including metal objects or magnets, between a Galaxy phone and its wireless charger.

Battery cases

A battery case adds another electrical system and extra physical distance. Apple lists battery cases among the case types to remove when an iPhone will not charge or charges slowly. Some battery cases may have their own charging controls or pass-through behavior, so consult the case maker’s instructions for the exact model.

Wallets, cards, rings, and kickstands

Wallet sections can add thickness and place payment cards or other objects directly over the charging coil. A ring or kickstand can create a gap or contain metal. Remove these attachments before deciding that the phone or charger is defective.

Belkin advises removing a MagSafe Wallet or another magnetic accessory attached to an iPhone or case before using a Qi2 charger because the accessory can interfere with magnetic alignment and charging function. See the company’s guidance on magnetic chargers and its support article.

Is there a universal case-thickness limit?

No. Thickness limits are not standardized across all phones, cases, and chargers.

Samsung’s Galaxy troubleshooting page says a non-Samsung case should be no thicker than 5 mm. That is Samsung’s troubleshooting recommendation for non-Samsung Galaxy cases; its publication or revision date is not stated in the cited material. Do not apply 5 mm as a guaranteed limit to an iPhone, another Android phone, or every charger. For a different phone, follow that manufacturer’s guidance and test the exact case-and-charger combination.

Material and construction can matter as much as the ruler measurement. A thin case with a metal plate may fail, while a somewhat thicker case made only from nonconductive material may work. The location of the phone’s coil also differs by model, so a case opening or accessory that is harmless on one phone can cover the coil on another.

Why a phone may charge slowly even when it charges

Charging through a case is not an all-or-nothing question. A phone can begin charging but receive power more slowly than expected. Belkin identifies three practical variables: case thickness, alignment on the charger, and charger output.

Variable What happens What to check
Case thickness Greater distance between coils can reduce charging efficiency or stop charging. Test with the case removed; check the phone maker’s case guidance.
Case material Metal or other conductive parts can interfere with the charging field. Remove plates, rings, kickstands, wallets, and magnetic inserts.
Alignment Offset coils can cause intermittent or reduced charging. Center the phone on the pad and watch for the charging indicator.
Charger output A lower-output charger cannot provide the same rate as a higher-output compatible charger. Verify the pad’s rated output and the phone’s supported input.
Magnetic accessories Attached wallets or other accessories can block contact or disrupt magnetic alignment. Remove the accessory and test the phone by itself.

Official manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal speed ranking for products. A higher advertised wattage also does not guarantee that a particular phone will charge at that rate through a particular case. The phone, pad, power adapter, temperature controls, and alignment all impose their own limits.

Qi and Qi2: charging versus magnetic alignment

Qi charging

Qi describes the wireless-power standard used by compatible phones and chargers. A Qi phone can charge on a flat Qi pad when its receiver coil is positioned over the pad’s transmitter coil. The case can remain in place if it is thin enough and free of interfering materials.

Qi2 and magnetic positioning

Qi2 products add a magnetic alignment feature for compatible combinations. Alignment magnets help place the coils in the intended position, but they do not make every phone or case magnetically compatible. A phone may work on a Qi2 pad for ordinary wireless charging without snapping into place, provided it supports the required wireless-charging mode; careful placement may be necessary and maximum speed is not assured.

If magnetic attachment is important, verify all three parts together: the exact phone, a case designed for that phone and alignment system, and a charger that supports the same feature. A generic magnetic ring or plate can change the distance to the coil and may interfere with charging.

Step-by-step troubleshooting when charging fails

  1. Confirm wireless-charging support. Check the exact phone model’s specifications or support page. A case cannot enable Qi on a phone without a wireless receiver.
  2. Use the correct power source. Connect the charging pad to the adapter recommended for its rated output. A weak or incompatible adapter can limit performance even when the pad itself is functional.
  3. Center the phone. Place the phone’s charging area over the center of the pad. Remove it and reposition it if the charging icon appears and disappears.
  4. Remove external accessories. Take off a wallet, payment cards, metal plate, ring, kickstand, magnetic mount component, or any other object between the phone and charger.
  5. Test without the case. Apple specifically recommends this test for a thick, metal, or battery case. If the bare phone charges normally, the case or an attached accessory is the likely cause.
  6. Check thickness guidance. For a Galaxy phone using a third-party case, Samsung’s support guidance says to check the 5 mm maximum. Treat that number as Galaxy troubleshooting advice only, not a universal rule.
  7. Try a second compatible pad. If the bare phone still does not charge, test with another known-compatible charger. This separates a case problem from a pad, adapter, alignment, or phone problem.
  8. Verify the intended feature. If you expect magnetic snapping or a specific charging speed, confirm that the phone, case, charger, and power adapter all support the same Qi or Qi2 feature set. Basic charging may work even when magnetic alignment does not.

“If your iPhone isn’t charging or is charging slowly and your iPhone has a thick case, metal case, or battery case, try removing the case.”

How to choose a replacement case or charger

If removing the case fixes charging, you do not necessarily need a new charger. First decide whether the case’s protection or its accessories are worth the trade-off. A slimmer, nonconductive case may solve the problem while preserving wireless charging.

If you need Compare these specifications Why it matters
Reliable charging through the case Exact phone-model fit, case thickness, and materials The receiver coil must remain close to the pad without conductive barriers.
Magnetic snap-on alignment Phone compatibility, magnetic-case support, and Qi2 or equivalent charger support Wireless charging alone does not guarantee magnetic attachment.
Fast charging Phone’s supported input, pad output, alignment, and case limits The lowest-rated component sets the practical ceiling.
Use with a wallet or stand Whether the accessory is removable and whether it contains metal or magnets Accessories can increase the gap or interfere with the charging field.

Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact phone and case rather than relying on a universal thickness claim. Product listings should state whether a case supports the magnetic alignment feature you want; ordinary “wireless charging compatible” wording may only mean that a flat Qi pad can work.

Safety and practical habits

  • Keep metal objects, cards, and loose conductive items off the charging surface.
  • Do not assume a magnetic ring, wallet, or kickstand is harmless because the phone still shows a charging icon; it may reduce alignment or speed.
  • If charging repeatedly starts and stops, test the bare phone centered on the pad before replacing equipment.
  • Use the phone maker’s and charger maker’s instructions for model-specific limits, especially when using a thick protective or battery case.

The bottom line for everyday use

Leave a normal, slim, nonmetal case on the phone and try charging. Remove the case and every attached accessory if charging is absent or unusually slow. Thick, metal, battery, and wallet-style constructions are the main trouble spots. Samsung’s 5 mm figure applies only to its stated Galaxy troubleshooting context, while Qi2 magnetic alignment is an additional feature rather than a requirement for ordinary wireless charging.
