Ordinary 3.5 mm wired earbuds are passive audio accessories: plug them into a compatible headphone jack (or a correctly matched adapter) and they play without an app or firmware update. USB-C and Lightning earbuds are more dependent on the host device and operating system, and a few digital, noise-cancelling or otherwise feature-rich models contain electronics that may have model-specific software. Treat an update as a targeted fix for a documented problem—not routine maintenance for every wired earbud.
What “wired earbuds” can mean
The connector tells you more about update and app requirements than the word “wired” does. Three common connection types use different signal paths:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Type | How audio reaches the earbuds | What you normally need | Where compatibility problems arise |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm | Usually analog audio from the device’s headphone circuit | A compatible 3.5 mm jack, or a suitable adapter | The device may lack a jack; headset buttons or microphones may not work through every adapter |
| Lightning | Digital connection over Apple’s Lightning port | A compatible Apple device and supported iOS version | Device, operating-system and adapter compatibility; functions can differ on older products |
| USB-C | Often digital audio over USB-C | A host that supports USB-C digital audio | A USB-C-shaped port may not carry audio; calls, controls and high-resolution modes can vary |
A cable does not automatically make an earbud set “simple.” Passive 3.5 mm models generally have no firmware to update, while a USB-C set can include a digital-to-analog converter, control electronics, noise cancellation and a microphone. The exact model documentation determines which category you have.
When a 3.5 mm pair needs no app or update
For basic listening, conventional 3.5 mm earbuds do not need a companion application, account or firmware procedure. The phone, tablet, computer or game system supplies the audio signal; the earbuds’ speakers reproduce it. Apple’s guidance for its 3.5 mm EarPods simply requires a device with a standard headphone jack: Use Apple wired headphones.
#1 Best Overall
- The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
There are still two practical checks:
- Confirm the socket is an audio output. A 3.5 mm jack on a laptop, controller or phone may support headphones, a headset microphone, or only one of those functions.
- Check the plug and controls. A four-pole headset plug can carry a microphone and remote-button signals, but older devices or incompatible wiring may play audio while ignoring volume, pause or call controls.
If sound is clear and the functions you need work, installing an app or searching for firmware is unnecessary.
Why USB-C earbuds are different
USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guaranteed audio standard. Google’s Pixel instructions say to “make sure the device uses USB-C digital audio” (Set up & use your Pixel USB-C earbuds). Bose likewise warns that some USB-C ports do not provide audio (Connecting Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds).

- The host device supports digital audio over USB-C, not merely charging or data.
- Audio through USB-C is enabled if the device has a separate setting.
- The operating system supports the earbud’s microphone and call functions; Google notes that some devices may not allow calls with USB-C earbuds.
- The product’s control buttons, noise-cancelling modes and high-resolution formats are supported by that host.
Samsung’s own guidance also treats USB-C as a device-compatibility question; its current Galaxy instructions are at Connect USB-C wired headphones to a Galaxy device. A USB-C port that charges a phone is therefore not proof that any USB-C earbud will produce sound.
Lightning earbuds: requirements are not firmware maintenance
Lightning EarPods use Apple’s digital Lightning connection. Apple lists iOS 10 or later for its Lightning EarPods and documents compatible Lightning adapters in Use Apple wired headphones. Those are host-device and operating-system requirements, not an instruction to update the earbuds themselves.
If Lightning earbuds play audio but a button or microphone fails, check the specific iPhone or iPad model, iOS version, adapter path and headset documentation. Do not assume that a software update will add a missing hardware function.

Can feature-rich wired earbuds work without an app?
Yes, in some models. Electronics and an inline controller can be built into a wired product without requiring a phone application. For example, Belkin states that its SoundForm ANC Wired Earbuds (USB-C) are “plug-and-play on supported USB-C devices” and that inline controls switch noise cancellation and hear-through modes. Its FAQ is a product-specific statement, not a universal rule; see SoundForm ANC Wired Earbuds (USB-C) FAQs.

- Can the feature operate from the inline controls? Some products provide all essential switching on the cable.
- Does the host support the claimed audio mode? A device or app may be required for a particular high-resolution format.
- Does the manufacturer offer optional configuration software? An app can expose settings without being required for ordinary playback.
When wired earbuds actually have firmware
Firmware is the embedded software that runs a product’s electronics. Passive analog earbuds normally have no user-updatable firmware. A digital USB-C or Lightning product may have firmware, but that still does not imply a regular update schedule.

- 【Warm Tips】 If your USB C device includes a 3.5mm audio jack, this adapter may not support phone calls. For example, some models for Galaxy (S9/S8/S10, Note 9/Note 8) and for iPad Pro (11" / 12.9", including iPad Pro 2018) may not support phone calls or music control
Samsung documents a concrete exception for some older Samsung USB-C earphones used with Galaxy S23 phones. If users experience intermittent sound, lockups or sound lag, Samsung says the problem “can be easily resolved by updating the earphones firmware.” The support page, last updated January 31, 2023, uses the phone’s earphone notification flow: What to do if your USB type C earphones are not working properly with Galaxy S23.
This establishes a model-and-symptom-specific remedy. It does not establish that all wired earbuds need periodic updates, that every Galaxy phone has the same procedure, or that an app should be installed pre-emptively. If your exact model has no manufacturer update instruction, do not use firmware from another product.
Adapters: useful, but not universally interchangeable
An adapter can connect a 3.5 mm headset to a device without a headphone jack. Apple documents a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter for that purpose in Use Apple wired headphones. The adapter’s direction, internal electronics and support for microphone or remote signals matter.

Use this checklist before buying or blaming an adapter:
- For 3.5 mm headphones on a USB-C device, choose an adapter explicitly designed for USB-C audio output to 3.5 mm.
- Confirm whether it contains a digital-to-analog converter; a passive cable cannot replace a missing analog audio circuit when the host requires an active converter.
- Check headset microphone and button support if calls or inline controls matter.
- Use the device manufacturer’s compatibility list where available. Two adapters with identical-looking plugs can behave differently.
An adapter is optional for a compatible 3.5 mm jack and does not make an incompatible USB-C port provide audio.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the connector. Record whether the earbuds are 3.5 mm, Lightning or USB-C. Note whether the cable has an inline microphone, buttons or an ANC switch.
- Verify the host’s audio path. For USB-C, look for explicit USB-C digital-audio support in the phone, tablet or computer specifications. For Lightning, verify the supported device and iOS requirements. For 3.5 mm, test the physical headphone jack.
- Remove unnecessary variables. Reseat the plug, remove debris carefully, disable Bluetooth routing if the device is sending sound elsewhere, and test a second audio source. Do not force a plug or use a loose connection.
- Test the adapter independently. If an adapter is involved, try the earbuds directly on a known-compatible jack or test another known-compatible headset through the same adapter. This identifies whether the adapter, host port or earbuds are at fault.
- Separate playback from secondary functions. If music works but the microphone, call audio or buttons do not, consult the host and earbud manuals. Apple notes that some remote functions may not work with earlier products, and Google notes that call support can vary on USB-C.
- Check the exact support page. Search the manufacturer’s support site by the full model name and the observed symptom. Install firmware only when that page provides a procedure for your model and device combination.
- Follow the model-specific update flow. In Samsung’s Galaxy S23 case, the update appears through the phone’s earphone notification for the affected older USB-C earphones. Keep the connection stable and follow the on-screen instructions; do not interrupt an update.
- Stop when the evidence points to hardware. A damaged cable, bent plug, blocked port or failed speaker will not be repaired by an unrelated app or firmware package.
Symptoms and the most likely next check
| Symptom | First check | When firmware is plausible |
|---|---|---|
| No sound from USB-C earbuds | Confirm USB-C digital-audio support and try a known-compatible host | Only if the manufacturer lists an update for that model and symptom |
| Music works, but calls do not | Check host call support, microphone permissions and headset compatibility | Only with a documented call-related firmware fix |
| Buttons or microphone fail | Check plug wiring, adapter support and device documentation | Uncommon; require an exact model instruction |
| Intermittent sound, lockups or lag on affected Galaxy S23 setup | Open the Samsung earphone notification and follow its support procedure | Yes, this is Samsung’s documented exception for specified older USB-C earphones |
| ANC or hear-through will not switch | Confirm the inline control sequence and host support | Only if the product page specifically describes a firmware remedy |
What not to assume
- “Wired” means no electronics. Digital USB-C and Lightning models can contain active circuitry.
- “USB-C” means universal audio. Port shape alone does not guarantee digital-audio output.
- An app is required for every advanced feature. Some products expose ANC and hear-through controls directly on the cable.
- A firmware update is harmless troubleshooting. An incorrect package can be unsupported; use only the manufacturer’s exact model and procedure.
- A new pair is the first solution. Confirm connector support, adapter type and host settings before replacing working earbuds.
Practical decision rule
Use this short rule whenever you are unsure:
- 3.5 mm, basic listening, direct compatible jack: no app or firmware update.
- 3.5 mm through an adapter: verify the adapter’s audio direction and headset-function support.
- Lightning: meet the device and iOS requirements; treat software as a host-compatibility issue unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
- USB-C: verify digital-audio support first, then check microphone and call limitations.
- Persistent, model-specific glitches: consult the exact support page for a documented firmware procedure.
Official support materials document connection requirements, product features and isolated update procedures, but they do not provide a statistic showing how often wired earbuds need firmware updates. The safest general conclusion is therefore operational: ordinary wired listening is plug-and-play, while digital models should be judged by their connector requirements and model-specific support instructions.
