ABC’s own help guidance does not support a list of VPNs that work with iview. ABC says most iview content is limited to Australia by content-provider contracts, that a VPN masks your location, and that you should disable any VPN before using iview. For that reason this article does not rank VPN providers for iview, and no provider is presented here as tested or verified for iview access.
What ABC’s guidance says
ABC’s Help Centre page “Why can’t I access ABC iview using a VPN?” (last updated 17 December 2024) states:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
“Please ensure that you have disabled your VPN prior to accessing ABC iview so that you can view without issue.”

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The page gives two reasons. First, ABC says contracts with most content providers limit iview content to Australia. Second, ABC says a VPN, whether used inside or outside Australia, masks a viewer’s location, which makes it difficult for the service to tell where the viewer is. The page describes content rights and how access is enforced. It does not describe penalties for viewers, and it does not make a legal statement about using a VPN.

| Your situation | What ABC’s guidance supports | Practical route |
|---|---|---|
| In Australia, iview won’t play while a VPN is on | Disable the VPN before opening iview | Turn the VPN off, then retry on a supported device (see the device list below) |
| Overseas, want the full Australian iview catalogue | iview app is not available overseas; ABC does not offer a VPN route to the Australian catalogue | No official route. Do not expect a VPN to unlock it |
| Overseas, want ABC programmes | A specially curated selection cleared for international viewing is available on the iview website, with a free ABC Account required | Create or sign in to a free ABC Account and browse the curated programmes on the iview website |
If you are in Australia and iview won’t play
Work through these steps in order. Most cases resolve at the first or second step.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Switch off the VPN. Turn it off in its app, or in the device or router settings where it runs. ABC’s guidance is to do this before opening iview.
- Restart the iview app or reload the iview website so the session starts without the VPN’s location.
- Confirm the device is on ABC’s supported list. If it is not, iview may not be available on it at all, whatever your network.
- Check your connection. ABC says iview video quality adjusts to network conditions, and results also depend on your broadband, internet provider, device and operating system.
If you are overseas
ABC says the iview app is not available outside Australia. What it does offer is a specially curated set of programmes cleared for international viewing, which can be watched on the iview website. A free ABC Account is needed to watch these programmes. This is the official option to use. Because the Australian catalogue is restricted by content rights, the curated selection is the only route ABC describes for viewers abroad.

Video quality
ABC describes iview as an online on-demand service for Australian audiences. Its video-quality guidance says streaming is adaptive, so picture quality changes with network conditions. ABC does not give a numeric speed or resolution requirement on the pages reviewed, so do not assume a specific bandwidth figure applies to your setup. If playback stutters, test the same programme on a different device and network before changing anything else.

If you want a VPN for other reasons
A VPN may still be useful for general privacy or public Wi-Fi, but that choice is separate from iview access. If you are comparing services for those purposes, check the following for each provider, using the provider’s own documentation and independent sources:
- Supported devices and apps, including whether it runs on the devices you use
- Australian server availability, if that matters to you for other services
- Independent privacy audits, and whether the audit reports are published
- Connection limits per account
- Price, renewal terms and any introductory discount
- Refund policy and how long the refund window lasts
Do not treat an Australian server as a way around iview’s location controls. ABC’s guidance is that a VPN masks location, and it asks viewers to switch the VPN off for iview.
