Yes—but “work” can mean two different things. Many subscription-free doorbells still let you see a live visitor and receive alerts, while later playback of recorded events may require a paid plan. To review clips without a recurring cloud-storage fee, choose a model that explicitly supports local recording and check what storage it needs.
What “working” without a subscription actually means
Live video, alerts, and saved recordings are separate features. A doorbell may let you answer a visitor in real time but keep no event history for you to review later. Other models save clips to the device, a memory card, or a compatible hub, so playback may be available without a cloud plan.
Even local recording does not necessarily make a doorbell wholly offline. Remote live viewing and push notifications commonly depend on network connectivity, and some optional features may send video or images to a cloud service.
How subscription rules differ by brand and model
These are manufacturer-documented examples, not a complete comparison of every product. Plans, features, names, and availability can change, so confirm the current terms for the exact model and region.

| Example | Documented without a subscription | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| eufy local-storage models | eufy says recordings can be saved to built-in storage without a cloud backup plan. For C31/C30, it documents microSD storage up to 128 GB or storage through compatible HomeBase units. | Local storage can enable recorded playback without a recurring cloud plan. Check whether a card or hub is required, and review optional cloud features. eufy recording FAQ; C31/C30 storage FAQ; C30 product page. |
| Ring | Ring says users without a subscription can view live video and respond to alerts as they happen, but a subscription is required to review recorded video. | Missed events are not available for later review without a paid plan. Ring says cloud motion-event recordings can be stored for up to 180 days under an applicable plan and selected storage settings. Ring subscription support. |
| Arlo Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) | Arlo says motion notifications and live video remain available after the trial without a subscription. Cloud storage, interactive notifications, and video object detection are among features requiring a plan. | Live use and alerts do not mean that cloud recordings or all smart features are included. This documentation applies to the named generation, not every Arlo doorbell. Arlo product support. |
| Google Nest | Google’s plan comparison lists event previews without a plan for some models and longer event history under paid plans. It says 24/7 history is available only for wired cameras and doorbells. | Terms depend on model, power type, plan, and region. Temporary offline memory is an outage buffer, not necessarily a user-accessible archive. Google plan comparison; Google storage support. |
What local recording can—and cannot—do
Check where clips are stored
eufy says recordings can be saved to built-in storage without subscribing to cloud backup. For its C31/C30, its support FAQ describes storage on a microSD card up to 128 GB when connected to the router, or on a HomeBase 2 or HomeBase 3 when connected to one. The C30 product page says the card is not included, so check the box contents and compatibility before buying.
Treat retention estimates as conditional
eufy gives an example in which 16 GB can store videos for up to 180 days when the doorbell records 30 videos per day, with each video lasting 20 seconds. This is the manufacturer’s estimate under those assumptions, not a guaranteed retention period; actual storage duration depends on recording frequency and clip length. See eufy’s C31/C30 storage FAQ.

Do not confuse outage memory with an archive
Google says listed Nest devices can hold up to one hour of events in internal memory while offline and upload the material after reconnecting. Google says this memory is not accessible to users for security reasons; it is not a lasting, user-browsable local archive. Cloud upload requires both Wi-Fi and the Nest service. Google storage support.
Check optional cloud features
eufy notes that features such as cloud backup or thumbnail-preview notifications can send videos or thumbnails to the cloud as needed. If keeping footage local is important to you, inspect the settings for those features rather than assuming that local primary storage means no cloud handling. C30 product page.

What to check before you buy
- Playback: Does the no-plan version let you review recorded events, or only see live video and respond to alerts?
- Storage: Is footage saved on the device, a microSD card, or a hub? Is storage included, expandable, or sold separately?
- Retention: What capacity is supported, and what assumptions underlie any retention estimate? Clip length and recording frequency matter.
- Power and chime: Is the model battery-powered or wired? Will it work with your existing chime, or does it need a separate chime or hub?
- Network dependence: What stops working when Wi-Fi or internet access is lost? On-device recording is different from remote viewing and instant notifications.
- Optional cloud use: Can previews, backups, or smart features send video or images through a cloud service even when primary recording is local?
- Exact model and region: Verify the hardware generation, current plan terms, and regional feature availability. eufy’s product comparison guidance and Google’s plan comparison illustrate why these details matter.
