Sometimes—but only the parts with power will continue to work. A mains-only video door phone stops when its supply fails. A battery-equipped camera or monitor can keep operating locally, but remote unlocking, cloud alerts and live viewing also depend on the router, modem or ONT, firewall, PoE switch or injector, controller and lock power supply. To keep the complete system working, design backup power for the entire chain and verify whether the lock is fail-safe or fail-secure.
What happens to a video door phone during a power cut?
The outcome is determined by the system’s power topology, not by the fact that it has a camera. A wired outdoor station, indoor monitor and controller normally receive continuous low-voltage power from a mains-powered adapter, distribution unit or PoE system. When that source fails, the intercom cannot make a call or display video unless a battery-backed supply or UPS keeps it running.

DOOR’s outage guidance states that wired devices need a constant power supply and should have backup power when continued operation matters. A basic video-door-phone installation listed by Urmet uses a 230 Vac, 50 Hz, 38 VA supply. That figure describes the specified supply for that system; it is not a universal consumption figure for every model.

- Local calling: the outdoor station and indoor monitor must both remain powered.
- Video recording or viewing: the camera, monitor, recorder and their storage must remain powered.
- Remote app access: the intercom, controller, router, firewall and ISP modem or ONT must all remain powered and connected.
- Door release: the electric strike or maglock needs its own compatible power source, and its behavior during power loss depends on its design.
Backing up only the screen or outdoor station therefore does not guarantee that visitors can unlock the door or that an app notification will arrive.

Battery video door phones versus mains-only systems
Some products include a rechargeable battery. The battery is normally charged while mains power is available and takes over when the mains fails. The ENFORCER DP-236Q manual says its rechargeable camera battery acts as a backup power source during an outage. Yale similarly states that the internal battery in its Smart Video Doorbell remains charged from mains power and acts as backup when mains power fails.
Battery fallback does not imply unlimited operation. Runtime depends on battery capacity, temperature, Wi-Fi or cellular activity, infrared illumination, display use, call frequency, lock-release events and the condition of the battery. The sources do not establish an industry-wide runtime or a universal number of hours. Use the exact model’s published battery-runtime specification, and treat it as a model-specific result rather than a promise for another device.
| System characteristic | What continues during an outage? | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Wired, mains-only intercom | Nothing unless its supply and connected equipment are backed up | Requires a UPS or listed battery-backed supply sized for the measured load |
| Intercom with rechargeable camera or monitor battery | The battery-powered unit may retain local camera or monitor operation | Network, controller, lock supply and cloud services still need power |
| Cloud-connected system with partial backup | Only the backed-up local functions | Remote viewing and alerts fail if the router, modem or ONT, firewall or PoE equipment is off |
| Complete-chain backup | Local calls, network functions and release commands can continue while stored energy lasts | Every load and the lock’s power behavior must be included in the design |
What must be on the UPS?
For full operation, backup power must follow the complete access-control chain. ButterflyMX’s guidance identifies the intercom, controller, PoE switch or injector, router, firewall and ISP modem or ONT as components that should each be on UPS power. The strike or maglock supply must also be backed up if the door is expected to release during an outage.
Outdoor station and indoor monitor
These are the obvious loads, but they are not the only ones. If either unit loses power, a normal video call cannot be completed. Check the installation manual for its input voltage, current, polarity and any battery charging requirements.

Controller, PoE switch and injector
An IP door phone may receive power through a PoE switch or injector. If that network-power device shuts down, the station can go offline even when the station itself has a battery. Include the controller that handles credentials, relays or door-release commands.
Router, firewall and modem or ONT
Remote app viewing and push notifications require a functioning local network and an upstream connection. Put the router, firewall and the ISP modem or optical-network terminal on the same backup plan. A UPS connected only to the intercom cannot preserve an internet path that has lost power.
Electric strike or maglock supply
The lock is a separate electrical load. A release command may reach the controller while the lock remains unable to actuate because its supply is unpowered. Use a listed access-control power supply or UPS arrangement that is approved for the lock’s voltage, current and wiring method.

Will the door unlock when the power goes out?
There is no single answer because locking hardware is designed to fail in different ways. ButterflyMX describes a typical electric strike as fail-secure: it remains locked when power is removed. A typical maglock is fail-safe: it releases when power is removed. These are common patterns, not a substitute for checking the actual device and installation.

Fail-secure electric strike
A fail-secure strike generally keeps the outside locked during a power failure. The door may still be opened from the secure side using the mechanical egress arrangement required by local code. To unlock it electronically from outside during an outage, the strike supply, controller and intercom must all remain powered.
Fail-safe maglock
A fail-safe maglock releases when its holding power disappears. That can allow passage during a blackout, but it also means a power failure changes the security state of the entrance. Fire and life-safety rules, emergency egress requirements and the site’s risk assessment determine whether that arrangement is permitted.
Verify the installed hardware
Do not infer behavior from the word “smart” or from the intercom model. Record whether the lock is an electric strike, maglock or another mechanism; identify its normal voltage and current; and document what happens when its supply is disconnected. An access-control installer should confirm that the release behavior meets local requirements.
How to choose backup capacity
There is no universal battery size for a video door phone. The correct capacity depends on the measured load and the runtime you need. Start with the electrical data for every device, then have the installer or UPS manufacturer account for startup current, conversion losses, battery aging and the lock’s surge or holding load.

Make a complete load inventory
- List the outdoor station, indoor monitor, controller, PoE switch or injector, router, modem or ONT, firewall and lock power supply.
- Read each manual for input voltage, current or power, battery requirements and permitted adapters.
- Measure the actual operating load where practical, including the network equipment that remains active between calls.
- Define the required runtime: for example, the short interruptions typical at the site, or a longer period needed for a building with unreliable utility service.
- Select a UPS or listed access-control battery supply whose output voltage, waveform, current rating and stored energy suit every connected load.
Do not size a UPS from the intercom’s label alone. A 38 VA specification for one 230 Vac Urmet supply cannot be transferred to another manufacturer’s system, and it does not include unrelated network equipment or a lock unless the documentation says so.
Battery-runtime expectations
Runtime is model-specific and changes with load. A camera that records continuously, illuminates at night or maintains a busy network connection will consume more energy than one that wakes only for a call. Battery age and temperature also affect available capacity. Use the manufacturer’s runtime table for the exact UPS or door-phone battery, and test the installed system rather than relying on a generic “hours of backup” claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Correct voltage, adapters and earthing
Using an incorrect adapter can damage the equipment or create a shock and fire hazard. Dahua’s Video Door Phone Quick Start Guide requires the supplied or correctly rated adapter, a safety-extra-low-voltage installation conforming to IEC 62368-1, protective earthing and compliance with local electrical codes.
Yale specifies an 8–24 V DC compatible supply for its Smart Video Doorbell and warns not to connect 110–240 V mains directly to the doorbell terminals. The range is a requirement for that product, not a general rule for all video door phones. Confirm polarity, current capacity, connector type and charging behavior before replacing an adapter.

Installation checklist for outage resilience
- Map the topology. Identify the outdoor station, indoor monitor, controller, PoE switch or injector, router, modem or ONT, firewall, recorder and lock supply.
- Read the exact manuals. Record voltage, current, battery type, charging limits, connector polarity and permitted wiring lengths. Do not substitute an unapproved adapter.
- Choose the backup architecture. Put every required component on one appropriately sized UPS or on a listed battery-backed access-control supply designed for the loads.
- Check the lock. Identify the hardware and document whether it is fail-safe or fail-secure when power is removed.
- Protect the installation. Follow local electrical and fire-code requirements, maintain protective earthing and use qualified personnel for work that requires a license.
- Label circuits and batteries. Mark which outlet or supply feeds each intercom, network and lock component so a future service visit does not accidentally leave part of the chain unprotected.
- Test before relying on it. Simulate an outage under controlled conditions and observe every required function.
How to test a backup installation
Arrange the test when residents, security staff and the installer can respond if the door behaves unexpectedly. Follow the UPS and lock manufacturer’s safety procedure rather than pulling random wires from a live access-control panel.
- Confirm that the system is operating normally and note the battery charge state.
- Transfer the protected equipment to battery according to the UPS procedure, or open the designated upstream supply under supervision.
- Place a call from the outdoor station and check indoor ringing and two-way audio.
- Check live video on the indoor monitor and any local recording function.
- Issue an unlock command and observe the lock, relay and door position.
- From a mobile connection, test remote viewing and an app notification if those services are part of the design.
- Restore mains power and verify that the router, modem or ONT, controller and intercom reconnect without manual intervention.
- Record the observed runtime and any failed function, then correct the fault before declaring the backup operational.
Common failure modes and fixes
The monitor works, but app alerts do not
The local intercom may be backed up while the router, firewall, modem or ONT is not. Put the complete network path on the UPS and check that the internet service itself remains available during the outage.
The app shows the visitor, but the door will not release
The controller may be online while the strike or maglock supply is not. Check the lock’s dedicated power circuit, relay rating and battery-backed supply. Confirm that the lock is designed to release in the required power state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The camera shuts down quickly
Check battery age, charging status, temperature and the actual load from infrared lighting, recording and network activity. Compare the result with the exact model’s published runtime specification; do not extrapolate from another battery product.
The replacement adapter overheats or the unit resets
Verify voltage, polarity, current capacity and connector compatibility against the manual. A supply that fits physically can still be electrically wrong. Replace it with the supplied or explicitly approved rated adapter.
The door’s power behavior is unsafe or unexpected
Stop relying on the system until the installer identifies the lock type and checks egress, fire and security requirements. Fail-safe and fail-secure behavior must be intentional and documented.
Quick Recap
Questions to settle before buying or installing
- Is the door phone wired, battery-equipped or powered by PoE?
- Which functions must survive: local calling, video, recording, remote app access, electronic release or all of them?
- Which network and access-control components are between the door station and the internet or lock?
- What are the exact voltage, current, battery and earthing requirements?
- How long must the system operate on battery, and what measured load will the UPS support?
- What does the lock do when power is removed, and does that comply with local safety rules?
