These limits are not measured under identical conditions. The six-player Dragonwilds figure comes from Jagex’s own setup guide, while the 10-player Valheim and 16-player Enshrouded figures come from a 2026 comparison table. Treat the limits as version- and source-dependent rather than a universal benchmark.

What “cross-play” and “dedicated server” mean here
Cross-play is about platform compatibility
Cross-play lets people on different supported platforms play in the same multiplayer world. It does not automatically mean that every edition, storefront, console generation, or future platform is included. Each game’s account, server, and platform support has to be checked separately.
A dedicated server keeps the world available
A dedicated server runs independently of a player’s normal game session. After it is configured and left running, friends can connect while the original owner is offline. That differs from a player-hosted session, where the host generally has to launch the game and remain available. A dedicated server can run on a spare PC, a self-managed cloud machine, or a rental service, depending on the game.

Administration is the trade-off
Self-hosting avoids a recurring rental bill but requires a machine that stays online, network configuration such as port forwarding when applicable, updates, backups, access control, and troubleshooting. Managed hosting removes much of that systems work but adds a provider charge. None of the cited material gives a universal price, so the cost decision is between your own hardware and bandwidth versus a provider’s current quote.
Valheim: the clearest PC-to-Xbox option
Cross-play works with a join code
Valheim’s official Crossplay FAQ, dated February 7, 2025, says players can start a game or dedicated server, copy a join code, and have friends on another platform add that code. This supports PC-to-Xbox play when the server’s cross-play setting is enabled. The join-code flow is useful when friends are not on the same storefront or platform ecosystem.
Cross-play is a server setting, not merely a property of the game purchase. If a dedicated server is created without cross-play enabled, an Xbox player may not be able to connect even though Valheim itself supports cross-platform sessions. Check the server configuration before distributing the code.
Xbox cannot host the dedicated server
The same official FAQ is explicit: “You can’t set up a dedicated server on an Xbox.” Xbox is therefore a client in this arrangement. An Xbox player can join a cross-play-enabled dedicated server hosted on a PC or another supported environment, but the console cannot run the always-on server process itself.
How to run a persistent Valheim world
- Use a Windows or Linux computer, or a hosting service that can run the Valheim Dedicated Server application.
- Install the dedicated-server application from Steam. Iron Gate’s FAQ says, “If you wish to run a persistent server you can download the Valheim Dedicated Server-application from Steam.”
- Configure the world name, password, visibility, and cross-play option in the server’s startup configuration.
- Make the server reachable from the internet. Depending on the network and host, this can involve firewall rules, port forwarding, or provider-specific networking controls.
- Start the server and give friends the join code or the connection details generated by the host.
- Keep the application updated and back up the world files before major game updates or configuration changes.
Iron Gate does not provide official public servers. The practical choices are therefore a computer you administer yourself or a third-party host you select independently. The cited official material does not identify a preferred commercial provider.
Who should choose Valheim?
Valheim is the strongest fit of the three when your group specifically needs PC-and-Xbox play today and wants an always-on world. The main limitation is operational: an Xbox owner still needs a separate PC or hosted machine to run the server.

What the official documentation establishes
Keen Games’ FAQ says, “It will be possible to set up dedicated servers, if you don’t want to always have to be online for your friends to be able to play.” The FAQ names GPORTAL as a rental collaboration and says other providers may also be used. This establishes dedicated-server support and a managed-hosting route, but it does not establish that cross-play is active.

A May 13, 2025 update described separate player-hosted and dedicated-server lists and performance work for dedicated servers. That distinction matters: a dedicated server can remain available independently, while a player-hosted list represents sessions tied to a host’s game.
Cross-play remains a planned feature in the cited status
The official FAQ describes a Steam-first launch and says PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions would follow after development completion. An October 15, 2026 PC Gamer comparison lists Enshrouded cross-play as planned for a future update. On that evidence, do not promise working PC-to-console multiplayer or advertise cross-play as a current feature. The safest description is “dedicated servers supported; cross-play not confirmed live.”
How to choose an Enshrouded server arrangement
- Player-hosted session: simplest for occasional co-op, but the host normally needs to be online.
- Rented dedicated server: the provider keeps the process online and usually supplies a control panel; you still need to manage passwords, world settings, backups, and version compatibility.
- Self-managed dedicated server: offers the most control but requires suitable hardware or cloud infrastructure, networking, updates, and monitoring.
Because cross-play is not confirmed live, choose the server only after verifying that every member of your group can use the same currently supported platform path. A dedicated server solves host-availability problems; it does not by itself create cross-platform compatibility.
Player capacity
A 2026 PC Gamer comparison lists 16 players for Enshrouded. The cited official material does not provide a matching capacity statement, so regard 16 as a comparison-table figure that may change with game version, server configuration, or later updates.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds: cross-play plus dedicated servers across three platforms
Supported platforms and cross-play
Jagex announced that Dragonwilds arrived on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 15, 2026, with dedicated-server support. The dated comparison of the three games reports cross-play across those platforms. That makes Dragonwilds the broadest current console-and-PC cross-play choice in this comparison.
The platform statement is specific to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It does not establish support for older console generations, handheld editions, or other storefronts, so do not extend the claim beyond those platforms.
Capacity is six players on version 0.11
Jagex’s official how-to guide states: “The server can support up to 6 players as of 0.11 (March 2026).” The number is tied to that version. If a later update changes the limit, the current server documentation should take precedence over older guides or community tables.

Available hosting models
The setup guide lists three practical routes:
- Home computer: run the server on hardware you control. This avoids a separate hosting contract but requires the computer to stay powered on and reachable.
- Self-managed cloud hosting: rent a virtual machine and install and administer the server yourself. This adds monthly infrastructure cost and technical maintenance.
- Managed hosting: Jagex’s guide names Shockbyte as an option. Treat that as a documented provider example, not an endorsement; compare current terms, location, backups, controls, and version support before subscribing.
In all three cases, a dedicated server is the mechanism that lets friends play when the owner is not in the game. The guide’s six-player limit applies to the dedicated-server setup documented for version 0.11.
Physical console editions
Jagex’s official FAQ says the Standard and Deluxe editions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 include a physical disc. That packaging detail does not alter cross-play or server behavior, but it helps buyers distinguish the console editions covered by the platform announcement.

Setup checklist before you commit
- Confirm every player’s platform and game version. Cross-play is platform- and version-specific, especially for Dragonwilds and Enshrouded.
- Decide whether the world must run while the owner is offline. If yes, use a dedicated server rather than a normal player-hosted session.
- Choose who administers it. A home PC or self-managed cloud machine requires technical responsibility; managed hosting shifts that work to a provider.
- Check the documented player limit. Do not exceed the version-specific capacity, and remember that comparison-table figures can differ from official limits.
- Plan access and recovery. Use a strong password, restrict administrative access, keep world backups, and record the server’s update and restart procedure.
- Recheck status before launch. Platform releases, cross-play, player limits, and hosting integrations can change; verify the game’s current official FAQ or setup guide on the day you configure the server.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a console can host because it can join
Valheim demonstrates the difference directly: Xbox can connect to a dedicated server but cannot create one. Treat joining and hosting as separate capabilities for every game.
Confusing a dedicated server with cross-play
A server that stays online does not make incompatible platforms communicate. Enshrouded’s current status shows why both questions must be answered independently.
Quoting a player limit without its version
Dragonwilds’ six-player limit is explicitly tied to version 0.11 (March 2026). Keep that qualification attached whenever you document or plan the server.
Ignoring maintenance
Dedicated servers still need updates, restarts, backups, password changes, and troubleshooting. A rental control panel may simplify those tasks, but it does not remove the need to check compatibility after game updates.
Bottom line
Choose Valheim for proven PC-to-Xbox cross-play and a persistent world, provided a PC or hosted machine—not an Xbox—runs the server. Choose Enshrouded if dedicated-server play is your priority and your group can wait for confirmed cross-play; its current cross-platform status is not established as live.
