Yes—but the answer depends on where the tree is and what you do with its stump. A pre-existing wild tree outside your farm has a 20% chance each night to return as a Stage 3 seedling after you remove the stump. Leaving the stump in place prevents that regrowth. Farm trees use a different system: mature trees can spread seeds to nearby valid tiles, and you can plant seeds yourself.

Regrowth is only the first step. The returned seedling still needs time to mature, and winter pauses ordinary unfertilized growth. Tree Fertilizer, species, farm layout, and your goal—Wood, Hardwood, or tapped products—all change the best approach.

The short answer: location and stump removal decide regrowth

In Valley areas outside the farm, the game treats a chopped pre-existing tree differently from a tree planted on your farm. Once you fell the wild tree and remove its stump, it has a 20% chance per night to come back as a Stage 3 seedling. That chance applies in winter as well. If the stump remains, the tree does not return under this rule. The mechanic is documented on the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Trees page.

The respawned Stage 3 seedling is not instantly mature. It must continue through the normal growth stages. Treat “the tree regrows” as two separate events: first, a nightly roll that restores a seedling; second, the seedling’s ordinary growth toward adulthood.

What happens if you leave the stump?

A stump is not a shortcut to a future tree. For outside-farm pre-existing trees, leaving it means that tree will not regrow through the 20% nightly respawn mechanic. Chop the stump with your axe if you want the tile to become eligible for a new seedling.

Does the outside-farm rule apply everywhere?

No. It applies to pre-existing wild trees in eligible areas outside your farm. Farm trees do not use this respawn roll, and Ginger Island has its own notable source of wild Mahogany trees that regrow for Hardwood. Those are location-specific cases, not one universal rule for every tree in the game.

Outside the farm: how wild-tree regrowth works

  1. Fell the pre-existing tree. Chop the trunk until only the stump remains.
  2. Remove the stump. The tile must be cleared; an uncleared stump prevents this tree from returning.
  3. Wait for the nightly roll. Each night, the cleared tree location has a 20% chance to produce a Stage 3 seedling.
  4. Allow the seedling to mature. Once it appears, normal growth rules and seasonal conditions determine how quickly it reaches maturity.

Because the chance is rolled nightly, a tree can return quickly or take many nights. The 20% figure is a chance on each night, not a promise that exactly one tree will appear every five days. Clearing several wild trees therefore gives you several independent opportunities, while leaving stumps blocks those locations.

Wild trees outside the farm do not spontaneously spread seeds from planted trees. If you want a new tree in an eligible untilled outdoor tile, plant the appropriate seed yourself. The game’s tree rules distinguish that deliberate planting from the respawn of a pre-existing wild tree.

On the farm: seed spread replaces automatic respawn

Farm trees rely on planting and seed spread rather than the outside-farm stump rule. A mature farm tree—excluding a stump—has a 15% chance each night to attempt to plant a seed nearby. The attempt succeeds only when the seed lands on a valid empty tile. You can also plant seeds directly wherever the tile and surrounding conditions permit.

Why a farm tree may appear to stop growing

A seedling cannot advance beyond Stage 4 while a mature tree occupies any of its eight adjacent tiles. This is the eight-tile neighborhood surrounding the seedling, including diagonals. Crowded orchards can therefore leave young trees stuck even though they are otherwise healthy. Leave growth space around each planted seed, or remove the neighboring mature tree until the seedling advances.

A practical farm layout

  • Plant trees with open surrounding tiles so no mature trunk blocks a seedling’s Stage 4 growth.
  • Separate production trees from paths, buildings, machines, and crops that could invalidate a landing tile for seed spread.
  • Use direct planting when you need a predictable row; treat spontaneous 15% seed spread as a bonus, not a schedule.
  • Mark a dedicated area for Mahogany if Hardwood is the priority, because its growth is slower and more variable than ordinary trees.

How long do trees take to grow?

Growth time depends on species and fertilizer. For ordinary non-Mahogany wild trees, an unfertilized seedling has a 20% chance each night to advance one stage. Stage 4 takes twice as long as the other stages. The Trees page gives a median of 24 days from seed to maturity, excluding winter; about 90% mature within 38 days and 99% within 55 days. Those are distributions, not guarantees for an individual seed.

Tree or condition Nightly growth behavior Typical timing or qualification
Ordinary wild tree, unfertilized 20% chance to advance; Stage 4 takes twice as long Median 24 days from seed to maturity; 90% within 38 days and 99% within 55 days, excluding winter
Non-Mahogany wild tree, fertilized Advances one stage each night except Stage 4, which takes two days Reaches maturity in five days
Mahogany, unfertilized 15% chance to advance each night Typical growth 26 ± 12 days
Mahogany, fertilized 60% chance to advance each night, including winter Typical growth 7 ± 2 days
Mystic tree, fertilized 30% chance to advance each night Less reliable than ordinary fertilized wild trees

The timing figures are mechanics values documented by the Tree Fertilizer, Mahogany Tree, and Trees pages. Individual trees can finish earlier or later because each nightly advance is chance-based.

Winter: what stops, what continues, and what fertilizer changes

Outside-farm respawn still rolls in winter

The 20% nightly chance for a cleared outside-farm tree to return as a Stage 3 seedling is not suspended by winter. A wild tree can therefore reappear during winter. The seasonal restriction affects the seedling’s subsequent growth, not the stated respawn chance.

Unfertilized seedlings normally pause

Ordinary unfertilized seedlings do not grow during winter. A seedling may exist on the map but remain at its current stage until the season allows growth again. This is why a winter respawn should not be confused with a winter harvest-ready tree.

Fertilized wild trees can grow in winter

Tree Fertilizer allows eligible wild-tree seedlings to advance during winter. It must be applied to an existing planted seed or seedling, not to an empty tile. Most fertilized wild trees advance one stage per night, with the Stage 4 stage taking two days; a fertilized non-Mahogany seed can reach maturity in five days.

Tree Fertilizer does not speed Fruit Trees or Tea Bushes. It can be crafted at Foraging Level 7. The complete application and species exceptions are listed on the Tree Fertilizer page.

Tree Fertilizer by species

Ordinary wild trees

For common non-Mahogany wild trees, fertilizer turns a variable, season-limited process into a much faster schedule: one stage per night except for the two-day Stage 4 step. The five-day maturity figure applies to a fertilized non-Mahogany seed under the documented rules.

Mahogany trees

Mahogany is slower without fertilizer, with a 15% nightly advance chance and a typical 26 ± 12 day growth time. Fertilizer raises the nightly chance to 60%, works in winter, and produces a typical 7 ± 2 day growth time. If you are building a dependable Hardwood grove, fertilize newly planted Mahogany seeds rather than relying on the slower unfertilized distribution.

Mystic trees

Mystic trees do not receive the same reliable boost as ordinary wild trees. Their fertilized nightly advance chance is 30%, so fertilizer helps but remains substantially more variable than the ordinary one-stage-per-night behavior.

Fruit Trees and Tea Bushes

Tree Fertilizer does not accelerate Fruit Trees or Tea Bushes. Do not spend fertilizer expecting the five-day wild-tree schedule to apply to those plants.

Getting Hardwood: the fastest sources and their limits

Hardwood is not dependent on ordinary tree respawn alone. Mahogany trees are a renewable farm option: grow one from a Mahogany Seed, then chop the mature tree for 8–13 Hardwood. A tapper on a Mahogany tree produces Sap. Species details are documented on the Mahogany Tree page.

Large Stumps and Large Logs

Large Stumps and Large Logs also provide Hardwood and require the appropriate axe upgrades. According to the Hardwood page, the recurring Large Stump locations are:

  • Secret Woods: six Large Stumps respawn daily.
  • Forest Farm: eight Large Stumps respawn daily on the left side of the map.
  • Four Corners Farm: one Large Stump respawns daily in the top-left corner.

Ginger Island has wild Mahogany trees that regrow after being chopped for Hardwood. That island supply is separate from the common Valley rule about clearing a stump and waiting for a Stage 3 seedling.

Choosing a Hardwood plan

Your goal Best use of the mechanics Important constraint
Immediate recurring Hardwood Visit respawning Large Stumps in the Secret Woods or a compatible farm map Large Stumps require the relevant axe capability
Farm-grown Hardwood Plant Mahogany Seeds and fertilize them Mahogany has lower unfertilized growth and variable timing
Island supply Chop wild Mahogany trees on Ginger Island This is a location-specific regrowth source
General Wood Clear outside-farm trees, remove stumps, and allow the 20% nightly respawn roll The returned tree still needs normal seedling growth

Tapping trees and seasonal exceptions

Mature common trees can carry a tapper. Maple trees produce Maple Syrup, Oak trees produce Oak Resin, and Pine trees produce Pine Tar. Common tree tappers continue producing through winter. The relevant mechanics are described on the Tapper, Maple Tree, Oak Tree, and Pine Tree pages.

Two seasonal-looking exceptions matter when planning a tapping grove:

  • Premium “No Goose" Sticker
  • Mushroom Trees: they turn into stumps in winter and produce nothing during that season.
  • Type 3 Green Rain Trees: they also become stumps in winter and stop producing for the season.

These trees should not be treated as ordinary common trees when estimating winter output. A stump in this seasonal context is part of the species’ winter behavior, not evidence that the outside-farm 20% respawn rule will restore it.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

“I left the stump, so why didn’t the tree come back?”

For an outside-farm pre-existing tree, remove the stump. The 20% nightly respawn chance requires the cleared location.

“The new seedling is stuck at Stage 4.”

Check all eight adjacent tiles for a mature tree. A mature neighbor blocks growth beyond Stage 4. Clear the obstruction or redesign the grove with more spacing.

“I planted a seed in winter and nothing happened.”

Unfertilized ordinary seedlings do not advance during winter. Apply Tree Fertilizer to an existing seed or seedling if the species is eligible; fertilizer allows winter growth for qualifying wild trees.

“Fertilizer did not make my Fruit Tree grow faster.”

That is expected. Tree Fertilizer does not speed Fruit Trees or Tea Bushes.

“My Mahogany grove still grows unevenly after fertilizing.”

Mahogany fertilizer improves the odds to 60% per night but does not guarantee an advance every night. Its typical fertilized timing is 7 ± 2 days, so different trees can still finish on different dates.

“I chopped a tree and expected Hardwood.”

Most ordinary trees are a Wood source, not a reliable Hardwood source. Use Mahogany trees, Large Stumps, Large Logs, or the documented Ginger Island Mahogany supply when Hardwood is the target.

A decision guide for planting, clearing, and waiting

  1. Identify the location. Outside the farm, farm, or Ginger Island determines which regrowth rule applies.
  2. Define the output. Choose ordinary Wood, another mature tree, Hardwood, or tapper products before cutting.
  3. Handle the stump correctly. Remove an outside-farm stump when you want that wild tree location to respawn; do not assume a stump is a farm-growth stage.
  4. Clear the growth neighborhood. On the farm, keep the eight adjacent tiles open around young seedlings.
  5. Use fertilizer selectively. Fertilize eligible wild-tree seeds or seedlings when winter growth or a faster harvest matters. Skip it for Fruit Trees and Tea Bushes.
  6. Plan around probability. A 20% respawn roll, a 15% farm seed-spread roll, and species-specific growth chances are independent nightly opportunities, not fixed calendars.

What “regrow” means in each situation

Situation Does it regrow automatically? What you must do
Pre-existing tree outside the farm, stump removed Yes, 20% nightly chance to return as a Stage 3 seedling Wait for the respawn roll, then allow normal growth
Pre-existing tree outside the farm, stump left No under this rule Remove the stump if you want the location eligible
Tree planted on the farm Not through the outside-farm respawn rule Plant a seed or rely on a mature tree’s 15% nightly seed-spread attempt
Mahogany tree on Ginger Island Yes, as a location-specific Hardwood source Return to the island and manage the wild Mahogany supply
Mushroom Tree or Type 3 Green Rain Tree in winter Seasonal production stops while it is a stump Wait for the seasonal cycle; do not apply ordinary common-tree assumptions

Bottom line for a working tree farm

Clear outside-farm stumps when you want wild trees to return, but do not expect a cleared stump itself to grow back. On the farm, plant deliberately, leave eight-tile breathing room, and treat seed spread as a useful 15% nightly bonus. For winter or predictable timing, fertilize eligible wild-tree seedlings; for Hardwood, prioritize Mahogany and recurring Large Stump locations instead of ordinary trees. These distinctions let you build separate areas for Wood, Hardwood, and tapper production without relying on the wrong regrowth rule.
