A 24/7 stream runs through peak and off-peak periods, so compare the computer’s measured electricity cost across every rate period with a VPS plan that can handle your stream and includes enough outgoing data. Add relevant cooling, broadband, equipment and transfer-overage costs; the winner depends on your tariff, workload and whether the PC would already be on.
Why TOU rates do not settle the comparison
TOU tariffs charge different marginal energy prices at different times, with schedules that may also change by season. They can lower the cost of electricity used during cheaper periods, but a stream that must remain live continuously cannot simply avoid the expensive hours. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology describes time-varying rate schedules; your utility’s current tariff, not a generic rate, determines your result. See NIST’s explanation of time-based electricity rates.

The fair comparison is the home PC’s measured marginal electricity cost over the same billing period as a suitable VPS plan’s price and any transfer charges. If the PC would be running anyway, count only the extra power caused by streaming. If you would otherwise turn it off, count the full system draw while it runs.

Measure the home PC’s actual streaming power
Measure at the wall under the real workload
Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the whole computer while it runs the encoder and stream configuration you intend to use. Record an average across representative periods rather than relying on a power-supply label, a brief peak, or a generic desktop estimate. The power-supply rating is not the same as the computer’s measured draw. A cost-comparison guide likewise recommends using actual measured power and your own electricity rate: DOE guidance on estimating appliance and electronic energy use.

If the PC is already on for other work, measure or estimate the difference between its normal load and the streaming workload; that incremental draw is the relevant cost of the streaming decision. If it is dedicated to the stream, use its full measured draw. There is no representative wattage that can safely be assumed for every streaming PC.
Find the marginal rates and periods on your bill
Check the current utility tariff for each applicable time period and season, and use the marginal energy charge per kilowatt-hour. Fixed charges, minimum bills, demand charges or tier thresholds can affect a bill, but do not automatically belong to the streaming cost: include them only if the added load changes what you actually pay.

For a TOU month, calculate each interval separately and add them:
Monthly variable energy cost = Σ (average kW × hours in rate period × marginal energy price per kWh for that period)
Use the hours your stream actually runs in each period. If your tariff has seasonal schedules, split the calculation by season as well. The formula estimates variable energy charges; check your bill for other charges that the added load could trigger.

Check whether the VPS can sustain the stream
A VPS sticker price is not enough to establish that a plan is suitable. Confirm that its CPU and memory can run your actual encoder at the selected resolution, frame rate and codec, and check the provider’s regional included-transfer allowance and overage terms. A continuous video feed sends data from the VPS to YouTube, so outgoing transfer can be as important as compute price.

Estimate outgoing data from your bitrate
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 bitrates of 14 Mbps for 4K/30fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p/60fps and 8 Mbps for 720p/60fps. These are platform recommendations, not mandatory settings for every stream. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance.
For scale, a continuously sent 5 Mbps feed would use roughly 1.62 TB over 30 days before protocol overhead: 5 megabits per second × 86,400 seconds per day × 30 days ÷ 8 bits per byte, using decimal units. That is a calculation, not a provider allowance or a guarantee of what a particular stream will send. Compare your actual bitrate and schedule with the VPS plan’s transfer rules.
A Lightsail price example, not a suitability guarantee
Amazon Web Services’ pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists a Linux/Unix public IPv4 Lightsail bundle at $5 USD per month, with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer. This is a listed example, not proof that the entry plan can reliably encode a particular live stream. AWS says allowances can vary by region and outbound transfer beyond the allowance may incur extra charges. Confirm the current terms for your region and test the actual workload before choosing a plan. See AWS Lightsail pricing and AWS Lightsail FAQ.
Compare the full costs on the same basis
- Measure the PC. Record average whole-system wall draw during the actual streaming workload, and distinguish incremental power from full-system power.
- Map the tariff. List the applicable TOU periods, seasons and marginal energy prices from your current utility tariff.
- Calculate home energy charges. Apply the measured load to the hours in each rate period, then consider only bill charges that the extra load could change.
- Add costs that change because of streaming. Include material extra cooling, new or replacement equipment, or a broadband upgrade. Keep sunk costs separate from new expenses.
- Choose a VPS candidate and test it. Verify compute suitability for the intended encoder settings, then check region-specific transfer allowances and overage prices against the stream’s bitrate and schedule.
- Compare equal billing periods. Put home variable energy and relevant incremental costs beside the VPS fee and likely transfer charges for the same period. If they are close, include the value of setup, monitoring and recovery work.
There is no specific monthly saving to quote without your tariff, measured wattage, stream bitrate and VPS region. The comparison can change substantially if the PC already runs, home broadband needs upgrading, or the VPS exceeds its included transfer.

Operational costs and reliability matter too
A home PC depends on your home power and internet connection and remains your responsibility to configure and monitor. A VPS moves the computer workload to a provider’s infrastructure, but you still manage the server, encoder, stream and recovery, and you remain subject to the provider’s limits and outages. Neither option’s price alone captures the effort of keeping the stream healthy.
YouTube advises testing before a live event with audio and video movement similar to the intended stream, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. Those checks help reveal configuration or delivery problems, but do not establish that a low-cost VPS has enough compute for every encoding workload.
Or let it run in the cloud
