No. A standard third-party pro gamepad is not guaranteed to work with every PS5 game. PlayStation’s current compatibility guidance says PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers. Licensed third-party gamepads are intended for supported PS4 games running on a PS5, while officially licensed specialty peripherals such as racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks may work with PS5 games when the individual title supports them.
The short answer depends on three things
“Pro controller” is not a single compatibility category. Before buying or connecting one, identify:

- The game format: Is the console running the PS5 version of the game, or the PS4 version through backward compatibility?
- The controller type: Is it a conventional gamepad, a specialty peripheral, or a controller being used for PS5’s second-controller-for-assistance feature?
- The exact model and title: Licensing and compatibility can vary by product, region and game. PlayStation recommends checking the manufacturer’s current information for both the controller and the specific title.
A controller can have excellent remapping and trigger adjustments yet still be unsuitable for a particular PS5-format game. Features and compatibility are separate questions.

PlayStation’s current support guidance uses a clear rule for ordinary gamepads: “PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers.” That means a conventional third-party pro pad should not be treated as a universal replacement for the DualSense when a game is running its native PS5 version.

The same guidance warns that not all officially licensed or third-party controllers work on PS5. “Licensed” therefore describes a relationship with PlayStation; it is not a promise that every game, every mode or every console generation will accept the controller.
The practical distinction is between a PS5 game and a PS4 game played on a PS5:

If a title offers both versions, selecting or installing the PS4 edition can change which controllers are usable. That is a compatibility difference, not a performance guarantee: the PS4 version may lack PS5-specific features or upgrades.

What counts as a standard gamepad
A pro-style controller with two analog sticks, a directional pad, shoulder buttons and conventional face buttons follows the standard-gamepad rule. Extra paddles, swappable sticks, trigger stops, back buttons and software profiles do not turn it into a specialty peripheral.

PlayStation’s FAQ specifically addresses licensed PS4 gamepads: they can be used for supported PS4 games played on a PS5, but “they are not supported for playing PS5 games.” This applies even when the product is marketed as a premium or competitive controller.
Why a license is not enough
Official licensing confirms that a product meets a platform holder’s licensing requirements. It does not establish universal game-by-game support. Firmware, connection method, console software and the game’s input implementation can all matter. A controller listed in an official accessories catalog still needs a model-specific compatibility check.
PlayStation’s accessories listing includes officially licensed examples such as the Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded Wireless, Razer Raiju and Nacon Revolution 5 Pro. The listing identifies them as licensed accessories; it does not say that each one works with every PS5 title. Use the manufacturer’s current compatibility page or manual for the exact model before purchasing.

Racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks are not treated like ordinary gamepads. PlayStation says officially licensed examples in these categories can work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games, provided the individual game supports the peripheral.

Do not extend the specialty-peripheral exception to a normal pro gamepad. A wheel being supported in a racing game does not imply that a licensed pad with back buttons will work in the PS5 version of another game.
The second-controller-for-assistance feature
PS5 has an accessibility feature that lets two controllers operate as if they were one controller. A supported third-party controller can be used as the second controller for assistance. This is useful when another person helps with navigation, timing or a difficult section.
That function is narrower than ordinary controller compatibility. A pad working as the assistance controller does not prove that it can serve as the primary controller in every PS5 game. Follow the device instructions and confirm that the particular controller is supported for this feature.
How to check a controller before you buy or connect it
- Identify the game edition. Confirm whether you intend to run the native PS5 version or the PS4 version on your PS5. Do not rely on the game’s title alone when both editions exist.
- Classify the controller. Put a conventional pro pad in the standard-gamepad category. Put wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks in the specialty-peripheral category. Treat an assistance controller as a separate accessibility use.
- Read the exact model’s compatibility statement. Check the manufacturer’s current manual or support page, including the model number and connection mode. “Works on PS5” can mean a limited function or PS4-game support rather than native PS5-game support.
- Check the individual game. Look for the game maker’s supported-peripheral information, especially for wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks. A platform-level license cannot replace title-level support.
- Confirm firmware and console requirements. Apply any manufacturer firmware update and follow its PS5 connection procedure. If the manufacturer lists separate wired and wireless support, use the mode specified for the game.
- Keep a fallback controller available. A DualSense is the dependable option for native PS5 games. Having one connected makes it easier to change settings, launch a title or troubleshoot a third-party pad.
Common situations and what they mean
“My licensed pro controller works in one game but not another”
This is consistent with the platform rules. The working title may be a PS4 version, or it may have explicit support for that controller or peripheral. The other title may be running its PS5 version and accepting only DualSense input. Compare the editions and consult the manufacturer’s game-specific list rather than assuming the controller is defective.

“The controller connects to the PS5, but the PS5 game ignores it”
A successful pairing or USB connection does not establish game compatibility. Check whether the game is the native PS5 release. For a standard third-party gamepad, the lack of input can be the expected result under PlayStation’s rule. Use a DualSense for the PS5 version, or launch the supported PS4 version if that trade-off is acceptable.
“The controller works in menus but not during play”
Menu navigation and in-game input can be handled differently. Verify the title’s controller support and the exact model’s instructions. Specialty devices require explicit game support; a menu responding to buttons is not evidence that every gameplay function is implemented.
“A wheel or arcade stick is supported, but a feature is missing”
Title-level support can be selective. Check the game’s own peripheral documentation for supported functions and modes. The platform rule says the device may work when supported; it does not promise that every button, feedback feature or game mode is available.

DualSense for broad native-PS5 compatibility
For a standard controller on PS5-format games, DualSense is the platform-supported choice. It avoids the central compatibility limitation that affects third-party standard gamepads.

DualSense Edge as a first-party pro-style option
DualSense Edge is a first-party PlayStation controller designed for PS5. PlayStation documents remappable buttons, adjustable trigger and stick settings, changeable stick caps and saved profiles. Those controls address the features people usually seek in a pro controller while remaining within the first-party DualSense family.
It is important not to describe DualSense Edge as third-party. Its value in this decision is that it combines pro-style customization with PlayStation’s own PS5 controller support. PlayStation also provides a PS5 pairing guide for the controller.
A licensed third-party pad for PS4 games on PS5
If you prefer a particular third-party layout, it can be a sensible choice for supported PS4 games running on PS5. Before buying, decide whether access to the PS5 edition’s features matters more than the controller’s paddles, trigger stops or profile system. The controller’s feature set does not change the edition-specific compatibility rule.
A specialty peripheral for a supported genre
Choose a wheel, arcade stick or flight stick when the game explicitly supports that category and the exact model. This is the strongest third-party path for native PS5 games, but it remains dependent on title support.
A practical decision checklist
- You play mostly native PS5 games: Use DualSense or a first-party pro-style DualSense option. A standard third-party gamepad is not a universal choice.
- You play PS4 games through backward compatibility: A licensed PS4 gamepad may work, subject to the model and game.
- You play racing, arcade or flight simulations: Check for an officially licensed wheel, arcade stick or flight stick that the specific PS5 title supports.
- You need shared control for accessibility: Check whether the third-party controller is supported as the second controller for assistance; do not infer main-controller support from that feature.
- You are comparing pro features: Evaluate remapping, trigger adjustment, stick options and profile switching only after establishing that the controller works with the game edition you intend to play.
Bottom line for the purchase decision
Third-party pro controllers do not work with every PS5 game. For a conventional gamepad, PlayStation’s present rule limits native PS5 games to DualSense wireless controllers, while licensed third-party pads are aimed at supported PS4 games played on PS5. Officially licensed wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks can be exceptions when a PS5 game supports them. Check the exact model, the exact game edition and the game maker’s peripheral support before spending money.
