Yes—cassette players are still made. FiiO currently lists the CP13 as a portable stereo cassette player, although that does not mean Sony has revived the Walkman line or that new players are widely available everywhere. The CP13 is a modern playback-only example; its features also show what to check before buying.
What cassette players are still being made?
FiiO’s CP13 product page identifies it as a portable stereo cassette player. That confirms at least one manufacturer offers a new model, not the size of today’s market or the availability of stock in every country. Check local retailers for current stock and pricing.

What the FiiO CP13 does
According to FiiO, the CP13 plays two-track stereo audio and supports Type I, II, III and IV tapes. It has a rechargeable battery and a 3.5 mm headphone output; headphones are not included. FiiO’s CP13 FAQ says it has no recording function. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results.

- Playback or recording: A cassette player may only play tapes. Do not assume it can record.
- Tape compatibility: Check which cassette types the model supports.
- Power and portability: Confirm whether it uses a rechargeable battery or another power source and whether that suits how you plan to use it.
- Listening accessories: Check whether headphones or a speaker are included, or whether you need to supply your own.
- Availability and support: Verify regional stock, warranty terms and whether the manufacturer offers repair or replacement support.
How the cassette Walkman changed portable listening
The Compact Cassette was developed by Philips, which broadly offered its license on the condition that manufacturers maintain compatibility. Sony’s corporate history says the company released its first Compact Cassette recorder, the TC-100, in 1966. The later Walkman grew from a request by Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka to listen to stereo music on an airplane: a monaural tape recorder was converted for stereo listening, and Sony developed the idea into a portable player for listening while walking.

Sony dates the original Walkman milestone to 1979. Its corporate history calls it “The first ‘Walkman’ stereo cassette player, which revolutionized the way we listen to music.” That is Sony’s own characterization of its product history. Sony’s history of the Walkman describes the product’s origins.
The scale of the Walkman’s success
In a 1999 anniversary release, Sony reported 186 million cumulative worldwide cassette Walkman shipments as of the end of fiscal year 1998. This is a historical total at that cutoff—not a figure for one year, current sales or all cassette players. Sony’s 1999 announcement provides the figure and its measurement period.

Why a new cassette player is not necessarily a new Walkman
“Walkman” refers to Sony’s historic product line, while the CP13 is a FiiO product. The fact that a cassette player is being made today does not establish that Sony has resumed producing cassette Walkmans. Nor do the available product details establish how many makers or models are currently on the market.
FiiO says in its CP13 FAQ: “In the current cassette player supply chain, particularly for portable cassette players, only mechanical cores are available, and the choices are very limited.” That is FiiO’s statement about its supply-chain context, not an independently verified inventory of the whole industry. The FAQ also says high-quality blank tapes are scarce, a practical consideration if you plan to record as well as listen.
