Sometimes—but the best current evidence does not show that temperature-regulating mattress covers reliably prevent awakenings for everyone. A controlled 2025 study found that healthy adults rated their sleep and thermal comfort better when an actively temperature-controlled cover was switched on. However, objective sleep measurements and biometric data did not differ significantly. Feeling more comfortable and remaining asleep are related, but they are not the same outcome.
Cooling bedding can be a reasonable experiment if heat, sweating or an uncomfortable bed surface is what wakes you. Treat it as a comfort intervention rather than a proven treatment for insomnia, sleep apnea, menopause-related symptoms or unexplained night waking. The product type, timing, population studied and strength of the evidence all matter.

What “staying asleep” means in the evidence
Sleep researchers use several different outcomes that are easy to blur together:
- Subjective sleep quality: how rested or satisfied a person says they felt.
- Thermal comfort: whether the sleeper felt too hot, too cold or comfortable.
- Sleep continuity: measured awakenings, wake after sleep onset and the percentage of time asleep while in bed.
- Sleep architecture: laboratory or home measurements of light, deep and rapid-eye-movement sleep.
- Biometrics: measures such as sleeping heart rate and heart-rate variability.
A cover can improve comfort without changing the number of scored awakenings. That distinction explains why some users may report sleeping better even when a monitor cannot detect longer or more continuous sleep.

The strongest direct test: a 2025 randomized crossover study
The most relevant recent evidence comes from a randomized, counterbalanced crossover study published in Clocks & Sleep in 2025. It included 34 healthy adults—20 women and 14 men—with a mean age of 30 ± 5 years.
How the study was run
After at least three familiarization nights, each participant used the same temperature-controlled mattress cover for 14 nights. Temperature control was active for seven nights and inactive for seven nights, with the order randomized so that half of the participants began with the active condition. This within-person design reduces the effect of differences between sleepers, such as usual body temperature or bedroom habits.
What improved
Participants reported better perceived sleep quality when temperature regulation was on. The difference was statistically significant (p = 0.001) and had a large reported effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.92). Thermal-related perceptions also improved, meaning the bed felt more suitable to the sleeper.

The investigators found no significant differences in objective sleep metrics or biometric measures; all reported p-values for those outcomes were at least 0.05. In practical terms, the study did not demonstrate fewer measured awakenings, a clear change in sleep stages or a measurable physiological improvement during the two-week protocol.

The authors concluded that the cover was associated with improved subjective sleep quality and thermal perceptions despite minimal objective or biometric changes. They noted that expectancy or placebo effects could account for part of the perceptual benefit and said longer-term physiological effects require further study. Because the participants were healthy adults and the intervention lasted only 14 nights, the result should not be generalized to people with diagnosed sleep disorders or to every commercial cover.
What earlier studies add—and what they cannot prove
Other investigations point to possible benefits, but each answers a narrower question or uses a weaker design than the 2025 crossover trial.
Powered temperature control: a 2024 free-living Pod study
A 2024 study followed 54 participants across more than 300 home sleep-test nights. Each person had four nights with an Eight Sleep Pod operating and four nights with it off. Selected sleep-stage changes depended on the participant’s sex and on when and how the temperature setting was timed. With the Pod on, mean sleeping heart rate changed by −2% and heart-rate variability by +7%.
Those findings suggest that the timing and intensity of active temperature changes may matter, rather than there being one universal “cooler is better” setting. They do not establish that the system prevents awakenings for the general population. The publication disclosed substantial company involvement: Eight Sleep funded the work, several authors were employees or shareholders, and other contributors were paid consultants or former employees. That does not invalidate the results, but it is important context when weighing them against independent replication.

Cooling for vasomotor symptoms: an 8-week pilot
A 2022 pilot study examined women experiencing vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats while using a cooling mattress pad. After eight weeks, symptom frequency was reported to be 52% lower. Average Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores fell from 11.14 at baseline to 7.87 at follow-up.
This population is clinically different from healthy sleepers who simply prefer a cooler bed. The investigators described the findings as preliminary. Sleepme Inc. supplied ChiliPad devices and provided an unrestricted philanthropic gift; the paper states that sponsors did not participate in study design, conduct, analysis or interpretation. The result supports further research for heat-related menopausal symptoms, not a claim that a cooling pad treats every cause of waking.
Passive cooling fabric: a 2024 conference abstract
A 2024 conference abstract evaluated a cooling knit mattress protector in a six-week field study. Participants used their usual bedding for three weeks, then used the protector for three weeks. The sample was 69% female, ages 21–76, with a mean age of 44. The abstract reported improved objectively measured sleep-onset latency and several self-reported measures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBecause the same people were measured before and after the protector, there was no randomized control period. Changes could reflect weather, routines, expectations or regression to the mean. The abstract is useful evidence that passive cooling protectors deserve study, but it cannot support a broad causal promise that the fabric stops nighttime wake-ups.

Passive protectors and powered covers are different products
| Product type | How it changes the bed | Evidence relevant to staying asleep | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passive cooling protector or cover | Uses fabric construction and materials to move heat or moisture away from the sleeper; it does not actively set a temperature. | A 2024 conference abstract reported better sleep-onset latency and self-reported outcomes in a pre-post field study. Causality remains uncertain. | Usually simpler, quieter and less expensive to operate, but cooling is limited by room temperature, mattress insulation and body heat. |
| Powered temperature-controlled cover or pad | Actively changes the bed-surface temperature, often according to a schedule or user setting. | The 2025 randomized crossover study found better perceived sleep with control on but no significant objective or biometric differences. Other studies report setting- and population-specific results. | Offers adjustable timing and intensity, but adds hardware, electricity, maintenance and possible noise or connectivity issues. |
A brief sensation of coolness is not the same as sustained thermal regulation throughout the night. Conversely, a powered system may be able to warm as well as cool, which can matter if a very cold surface causes later discomfort. The cited studies do not identify one universally best system.
Who is most likely to notice a benefit?
The most plausible candidates are sleepers whose awakenings consistently follow a thermal trigger:
- People who wake hot after getting under heavy bedding or during warm weather.
- Sleepers whose clothing or sheets become damp from sweating.
- People who feel a clear difference when the bedroom temperature, duvet weight or pajamas change.
- Those who want a controllable bed surface and are willing to evaluate comfort separately from medical treatment.
Even for these groups, the expected benefit is better thermal comfort, not a guaranteed reduction in measured wake time. A person may feel that a night was easier while objective sleep remains unchanged.
If awakenings occur with loud snoring, gasping, witnessed breathing pauses, restless legs, severe reflux, pain, frequent urination, panic, depression or persistent daytime sleepiness, cooling bedding should not be the only response. Those patterns can point to conditions that require clinical assessment. Night sweats that are new, drenching or accompanied by fever, weight loss or other symptoms also warrant medical advice.

How to test a cover without fooling yourself
A structured home trial can tell you whether the product helps your own sleep, even though it cannot prove a medical effect.
- Define the problem. For three to seven nights, record your bedtime, estimated sleep time, awakenings, how hot or cold you felt, and your morning sleep-quality rating from 0 to 10. Note room temperature, bedding and alcohol or caffeine because each can affect sleep.
- Keep the environment stable. Use the same mattress, pillows, pajamas and approximate bedroom temperature during the comparison. Do not change several sleep products at once.
- Allow familiarization. Give a new powered system at least several nights to learn its controls and give your body time to adapt. Exclude the first night if the setup itself disrupts sleep.
- Compare matched periods. Use the cover for at least seven nights, then compare with at least seven similar nights without active control or with your usual protector. If possible, alternate periods rather than placing all “cover” nights in a warmer or cooler week.
- Track both perception and continuity. Record morning comfort and sleep quality separately from estimated awakenings and total time awake. A wearable can provide trends, but consumer devices are not a clinical sleep study and may misclassify brief awakenings.
- Change one setting at a time. With powered systems, test a modest temperature change or schedule for several nights before adjusting it. Large swings can create new awakenings.
- Decide using a meaningful threshold. Keep the cover if comfort improves consistently and the cost, maintenance and noise are acceptable. Stop if it causes sweating, chills, skin irritation, leaks, repeated alarms or no noticeable benefit after a fair trial.
Choosing a product based on evidence, not a cooling claim
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the product passive or powered? | A breathable fabric protector cannot provide the same scheduled temperature changes as an actively controlled pad. |
| What outcome was actually measured? | “Feels cooler,” self-rated sleep, sleep-onset latency and objectively measured awakenings are different claims. |
| Who was studied? | Results in healthy adults, women with vasomotor symptoms and mixed-age field participants cannot automatically be combined. |
| Was there a control or randomization? | Randomized crossover comparisons provide stronger causal evidence than a before-and-after sequence. |
| How long did the trial last? | A few nights can show immediate comfort; they cannot establish long-term effects, durability or changes in health. |
| Is evidence available for the exact model? | Material claims or results from one device do not prove that every cover in the category performs the same way. |
| What happens if it fails? | Check return terms, warranty, washable components, water or electrical safety, controller noise and whether the system can operate without an app or internet connection. |
Common reasons a cooling cover does not solve the problem
The bed feels cold at bedtime but hot later
A passive protector may remove heat initially while the mattress, room and bedding still trap warmth overnight. Reduce insulating layers, improve bedroom airflow or use a powered schedule that changes gradually rather than setting the surface to its coldest level.
You wake shivering or with tense muscles
Overcooling can become its own sleep disturbance. Raise the minimum temperature, shorten the cooling period or add a breathable layer. The goal is a stable comfortable range, not the lowest available setting.

Your tracker reports no improvement
Wearables estimate sleep from movement and pulse and can miss quiet wakefulness. Compare several nights and your morning function rather than relying on one score. If you feel better but the tracker is unchanged, that is a subjective benefit—not proof of improved sleep physiology.
You still wake at the same times
Consistent timing despite a comfortable bed suggests that heat may not be the main trigger. Review light exposure, noise, medications, alcohol, reflux, pain, breathing symptoms and stress. Persistent or distressing insomnia deserves evaluation rather than repeated bedding purchases.
Bottom line
Temperature-regulating mattress covers can make some sleepers feel cooler and rate their sleep more favorably. The strongest current trial, involving 34 healthy adults over 14 nights, found that perceptual improvement without significant changes in objective sleep or biometric measures. Smaller or less controlled studies suggest possible benefits for selected settings, menopausal vasomotor symptoms and passive cooling fabrics, but they have important limits.
If heat clearly wakes you, choose passive or powered control according to the amount of adjustment you need and run a measured two-week comparison. Keep expectations realistic: a comfortable bed may help you sleep, but no current evidence justifies promising that a cover will reliably prevent awakenings or treat an underlying sleep disorder.
