For VR spatial tracking, no: Valve says the Steam Frame headset tracks the Steam Frame Controllers. The controllers also include familiar inputs for non-VR games, but Valve’s product page does not say whether they can pair with or operate as a regular gamepad without the headset.
What Valve confirms about the controllers
Valve describes two different functions on its Steam Frame product page. First, it says the controllers “are tracked in space by the headset.” That confirms headset-based tracking for their VR use.
Second, Valve says they include the familiar inputs needed for non-VR games: a D-pad, ABXY buttons, thumbsticks, triggers and bumpers. This establishes that the controllers have gamepad-style controls for non-VR play; it does not establish that they work independently of the headset.
Does that mean you can use them as a standalone gamepad?
That remains unconfirmed by Valve’s product page. It does not state whether the controllers can pair with a PC or another host on their own, or whether they can operate as a conventional gamepad when the Steam Frame headset is absent. A set of familiar buttons and sticks is not evidence of independent pairing or compatibility.

Valve says the controllers support the SteamVR catalog, but that describes their role in the Steam Frame VR system, not headset-free operation. Valve’s SteamVR listing provides context for VR games being played with supported VR headsets and controllers; it does not document how Steam Frame Controllers connect wirelessly without the headset.
What this means for your use case
- Playing VR games: Valve confirms that the headset tracks the controllers in space.
- Playing non-VR games with Steam Frame: Valve confirms the controllers have familiar gamepad-style inputs, but the page does not detail which games accept them or how that play is configured.
- Using the controllers without the headset: Independent pairing and operation are not established in Valve’s published product information. Do not assume they will work as a standalone PC gamepad.
For a buying decision, distinguish between “has gamepad-style controls” and “works as a standalone gamepad.” The first is confirmed; the second needs an explicit compatibility or pairing statement from Valve.
