SteamVR uses a compatibility chain: it first looks for a Steam Frame Controller binding, then can fall back to an OpenXR Generic Controller binding, and then to an Oculus Touch binding remapped to the Frame layout. That gives Steam Frame broad coverage, but it does not prove that every title has a suitable binding or that every control will feel correct.
Valve’s current beta notes add a separate path for games that do not accept VR inputs: Steam Frame Controllers default to gamepad input in those titles. You can change the preferred mode per game in Steam Input settings or in VR Controller settings on the Now Playing page, but this feature requires both Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta.

What “compatible” means for Steam Frame Controllers
Compatibility can describe three different experiences, and separating them prevents misleading “works with everything” claims. A game can start successfully, expose enough controls to finish a level, or provide a carefully designed experience that feels as though the developer tested Steam Frame directly. Those are not equivalent results.

Native Frame Controller support
A game with a Frame-specific binding is using an input layout intended for these controllers. Valve says tailoring a title to Frame Controllers produces the best user experience. Native support is therefore the strongest form of compatibility: the developer has mapped actions deliberately rather than relying on a translation layer. It is also the clearest way to avoid awkward button placement, missing hand poses or an interaction that assumes a different controller shape.

SteamVR fallback remapping
If SteamVR cannot find a Frame Controller binding, it checks for an OpenXR Generic Controller binding and then an Oculus Touch binding. SteamVR can remap one of those layouts to the Frame layout. The game may launch and be playable, but the result depends on the actions the original binding exposes and how well those actions map to Frame controls.
Fallback compatibility is still useful. It means you do not necessarily need a developer-authored profile for every headset and controller combination. However, remapping preserves the source profile’s assumptions. If the source profile has no action for a particular hand interaction, SteamVR cannot manufacture one. If it assigns a menu action to a location that is easy to reach on Oculus Touch but awkward on Frame, the game can be technically functional without feeling natural.
Gamepad input for a title without VR inputs
Some games do not accept VR controller input at all. In the SteamVR beta notes dated October 9, 2026, Valve says Frame Controllers default to gamepad input for those games. This is not the same as a VR controller binding: the game sees a gamepad, while tracking and touch capabilities are not being used as VR actions. A title designed around ordinary gamepad commands may work acceptably this way, but a game built around room-scale hand interaction cannot gain those interactions simply by receiving gamepad signals.

The preferred mode can be changed per game, provided Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta are enabled. This beta requirement applies to the gamepad preference, not necessarily to the ordinary Frame, OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch fallback process.
How SteamVR selects a controller binding
The documented order is useful when you are diagnosing a game that launches but has missing or awkward controls.
| Order | Binding SteamVR checks | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Steam Frame Controller binding | A title-specific layout intended for Frame Controllers. |
| 2 | OpenXR Generic Controller binding | A generic OpenXR layout remapped to the Frame layout. |
| 3 | Oculus Touch binding | An Oculus Touch layout remapped to the Frame layout. |
This fallback chain is a compatibility mechanism, not a certification list. It can provide a usable starting point when a developer has not published a Frame-specific binding, but it cannot create actions that the game never exposes. A title may also present an input scheme that technically works while placing an important action on an inconvenient control.
When troubleshooting, identify which level you are actually using. A Frame-specific profile suggests deliberate support. An OpenXR or Oculus Touch profile indicates translation. A gamepad profile indicates that the title has no VR-input path in the configuration you are running. Recording that distinction makes it easier to explain a problem and to reproduce it after an update.

Automatic rebinding
Valve documents automatic rebinding for SteamVR Input and OpenXR games. SteamVR can attempt to translate an existing input configuration to the active controller type. Automatic rebinding is more flexible than requiring a separate binding for every headset and controller, but it is inherently dependent on the source binding. Native support and explicit Frame bindings give developers the greatest control over action names, button placement and interaction behavior.

Automatic rebinding should be treated as a first attempt, not a test report. It can map standard actions such as movement, selection or menu access when those actions are clearly represented in the source profile. It does not guarantee that every action is exposed, that both hands are represented correctly or that an analog range has the same feel after translation.
Controller-type emulation
SteamVR’s compatibility features let you choose a controller type to emulate and rebind OpenXR titles. This is useful when a game recognizes a familiar controller profile but does not identify Steam Frame directly. After changing compatibility options, some games may need to be restarted before they read the new profile. If a title was already running, its input action set may remain cached until a complete exit and relaunch.
Change one compatibility setting at a time. Otherwise, it becomes difficult to tell whether a missing action came from the selected emulated controller, the game’s own binding, or an old profile that was still active. Save or note the working profile before experimenting so you can return to it.
Per-game gamepad preference
For a game with no VR inputs, the October 9, 2026 beta behavior starts with gamepad input. On a supported Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta installation, the game’s Steam Input settings or the VR Controller settings on the Now Playing page provide the place to select the preferred mode. Treat this as a separate configuration choice from SteamVR’s VR-controller binding fallbacks.
If the setting is absent, first confirm that both beta channels are enabled and that SteamVR has restarted with the beta build. Do not assume that a missing menu means the controllers are defective; the option is documented as a beta feature and may not appear in a non-beta configuration.
Step-by-step setup for a VR game
Use this sequence for each title rather than assuming that a successful headset launch proves the controls are correct.
- Confirm the software requirement. Decide whether you are testing ordinary VR-controller compatibility or the beta gamepad mode. Only the latter requires both Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta according to Valve’s October 9, 2026 notes.
- Start SteamVR and connect the Frame Controllers. Confirm that SteamVR shows both controllers before launching the game. Check battery status as part of this preflight; each controller uses one AA battery, so a weak cell can look like an intermittent pairing or input fault.
- Launch the VR title and test its default actions. Check movement, selection, grabbing, menu access and any action the game requires immediately. Do not wait until a difficult level to discover that a key action is unmapped.
- Open the game’s controller-binding view in SteamVR. Look for a Frame-specific binding first. If one is unavailable, inspect the available OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch-derived binding. Note the profile name rather than relying on the game’s startup screen.
- Test both hands and every essential action. Verify locomotion, turning, clicking, gripping, menu access, inventory or weapon controls, and any action needed to pause or quit. Test left- and right-hand assignments separately; a profile can expose the right controls while assigning one hand incorrectly.
- Test the fallback deliberately. Verify that every essential action has a control and that analog movement, clicking, gripping and menu buttons behave as expected. A title can launch under a fallback while still leaving an action inaccessible.
- Use compatibility options if the title expects another controller type. SteamVR can emulate a different controller type and rebind OpenXR titles. Apply the selected profile, then restart the game if it does not detect the change.
- If the game has no VR inputs, configure the gamepad path. With Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta active, open the game’s Steam Input settings or the VR Controller settings on the Now Playing page and choose the preferred mode. Test the game’s ordinary gamepad prompts and menus afterward.
- Retest after every change. A binding that fixes one action can alter another. Recheck the complete set of actions, not only the control that originally failed.
- Record the result. Note the binding type, compatibility option, beta status and any missing action. This gives you a reproducible setup after an update or a fresh installation.
How to tell whether a game is really working
A game should not be labeled “confirmed compatible” merely because it starts with Frame Controllers. Use the following checks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Recognition: the game detects an active controller profile rather than displaying an unknown or empty layout.
- Essential actions: locomotion, selection, interaction, grabbing, menus and any game-specific primary actions are assigned.
- Correct behavior: buttons perform the expected action, analog controls move at the expected rate, and both hands are represented correctly.
- Practical usability: the placement is comfortable enough for normal play, not just technically reachable. A control that works only with an awkward grip is a poor practical match.
- Prompt consistency: on-screen prompts should correspond closely enough to the active controls that you can identify the requested button.
- Persistence: the binding remains active after leaving and relaunching the title.
- Recovery: pause, quit and recenter or menu commands remain accessible if an interaction fails.
Valve’s standalone verification criteria specifically include checking whether the default controller configuration works well with Steam Frame Controllers. That criterion underscores why per-title testing matters: a general compatibility mechanism does not replace verification of the default configuration.

Common problems and the appropriate fix
The game launches, but there is no Frame binding
This is not automatically a failure. Inspect the OpenXR Generic Controller and Oculus Touch fallback choices in SteamVR. If one maps all essential actions, the game may be usable through remapping. If important actions are absent, the fallback is not a complete solution.
The controls are present but feel wrong
Fallback profiles inherit assumptions from another controller layout. Check whether a different available binding or controller-type emulation profile places the action more naturally. If changing compatibility options does not affect the running game, close and restart the title.
The title ignores VR controllers entirely
Use the gamepad route documented in the October 9, 2026 beta notes. Enable Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta, then set the preferred mode in the game’s Steam Input settings or VR Controller settings on the Now Playing page. The game will receive gamepad input rather than a native VR action set. If the title depends on tracked hands, gamepad mode cannot reproduce those interactions.
One hand or one action is missing
Return to the binding editor and inspect the complete action list. Automatic rebinding can translate known actions, but it cannot invent an action that the game’s original SteamVR Input or OpenXR configuration does not expose. A title-specific binding is the proper fix when the fallback cannot represent the missing action.
A setting change appears to do nothing
Some games cache their controller profile at launch. Apply the compatibility change, exit the game completely and launch it again. Then verify the profile in the binding screen before testing gameplay. If the profile still does not change, confirm that SteamVR is the active runtime and that you changed the setting for the correct title.
The game works until it is relaunched
Check whether the binding was saved as the game’s active configuration rather than used only for the current session. Reopen the title’s binding view after relaunching and verify the selected profile. Persistence is part of practical compatibility, not an optional extra.
How to compare two VR games for Frame compatibility
There is no authoritative current per-title compatibility matrix in Valve’s documented material, so comparisons should use observable criteria rather than a universal percentage. Score each game against these questions:
| Comparison axis | Strong result | Weaker result |
|---|---|---|
| Frame-specific binding | A default binding is explicitly tailored to Steam Frame. | No Frame binding is listed. |
| Fallback profile | OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch remapping covers the full action set. | The fallback omits or awkwardly places essential actions. |
| Input technology | The game supports SteamVR Input or OpenXR rebinding. | The game has no VR input path and must use gamepad mode. |
| Gamepad suitability | The game’s design works acceptably with gamepad controls. | Precise hand tracking or VR-only interactions are central to play. |
| Default verification | The default configuration has been checked for Steam Frame. | There is no title-specific verification available. |
| Restart behavior | The title recognizes profile changes after a normal relaunch. | Changes remain ineffective until additional troubleshooting. |
| Long-session usability | Buttons are reachable without changing grip or losing tracking. | Important actions are technically available but awkward in ordinary play. |
This framework distinguishes “the game starts” from “the game delivers a good VR experience.” It also explains why two titles using the same fallback can feel very different. A game with a small, conventional action set may be comfortable through OpenXR remapping, while another with many hand-specific actions may need a native profile.

Controller hardware context that affects setup
Valve describes Steam Frame Controllers as having standard gamepad inputs alongside additional tracking and touch capabilities. A game that only consumes gamepad input will use the standard controls, while a VR-aware title can expose actions through its controller binding. The presence of tracking hardware does not make a non-VR game understand tracked-hand actions automatically.
Each controller uses one AA battery, so keeping replacement batteries available is a practical part of setup, especially during troubleshooting sessions where repeated reconnects or restarts can delay testing. Battery replacement is a maintenance consideration, not evidence that a game is compatible; solve profile and binding problems separately from power problems.
What is and is not established about universal compatibility
Valve’s documentation establishes the fallback mechanism, automatic-rebinding behavior and the beta gamepad option. It does not establish a current authoritative result for every individual SteamVR title, nor does it publish a statistic showing what percentage of games work. Therefore, a general statement such as “all VR games work” goes beyond the documented evidence.
The safest answer to a buying or setup question is conditional: Steam Frame has broad compatibility tools, but the quality of the result depends on the game’s input technology, its available binding and whether its default configuration has been verified. Check the individual title rather than treating the platform-level fallback as a promise.
“While you will always get a better user experience by tailoring your title to the Frame Controllers specifically, our controller compatibility modes have become quite robust.”
Valve Steamworks documentation, “Steam Frame Input”
The practical reading is straightforward: SteamVR’s compatibility modes make experimentation worthwhile, but a native binding or a verified default configuration remains the best evidence that a particular game is ready for Steam Frame Controllers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Steam Frame Controllers work with every VR game?
No universal guarantee exists. SteamVR can use a Frame binding, then an OpenXR Generic Controller binding, then an Oculus Touch binding remapped to Frame. Whether the result is complete and comfortable still depends on the individual game.

Do I need SteamVR Beta for the normal OpenXR and Oculus Touch fallback bindings?
Valve documents those fallback bindings as part of SteamVR’s compatibility system. The Steam Beta plus SteamVR Beta requirement applies to the separate per-game gamepad-mode preference described in the October 9, 2026 beta notes.
Can a fallback binding make a game fully native to Steam Frame Controllers?
No. It remaps an existing OpenXR Generic Controller or Oculus Touch layout. A title-specific Frame binding remains the way to tailor action placement and interaction behavior.
What if a VR game has no Frame binding?
Inspect the OpenXR Generic Controller and Oculus Touch options in SteamVR. Test every essential action. If the fallback omits a required action or feels unusable, the game needs a better profile or developer-authored support.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why can a game be playable but still feel poorly matched?
A fallback translates the actions exposed by another controller profile. It may leave an action reachable but place it somewhere inconvenient or fail to represent a VR-specific interaction cleanly.
What if the game does not support VR inputs at all?
With Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta enabled, choose the preferred gamepad mode in the game’s Steam Input settings or the VR Controller settings on the Now Playing page. The title will receive gamepad input, not a native VR action set.
Why did changing the compatibility profile not fix the controls?
The game may have cached its controller profile. Exit it completely and relaunch after changing compatibility options. Also verify that the intended profile is active and that the title uses SteamVR Input or OpenXR rebinding.
How can I verify a game before calling it compatible?
Confirm controller recognition, test both hands and every essential action, check comfort and prompt consistency, relaunch to test persistence, and note whether the result uses a native Frame binding, a fallback or gamepad mode.

Do tracking and touch features work in a gamepad-only title?
Not as VR actions. A game without VR input support receives the standard gamepad path; the controller’s additional tracking and touch capabilities are not automatically exposed to that game.
Are there published percentages for how many games support Steam Frame?
No supported percentage is established here. Valve documents the compatibility mechanism but not a current, authoritative percentage or a complete per-title compatibility matrix.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Steam Frame Controllers are broadly supported through SteamVR’s Frame, OpenXR Generic Controller and Oculus Touch fallback chain, but they do not guarantee a perfect experience in every VR game. Test the individual title, use compatibility tools when needed, and reserve the “confirmed compatible” label for games whose essential actions and default configuration have actually been verified. For games without VR inputs, the October 9, 2026 beta gamepad option is a separate path that requires both Steam Beta and SteamVR Beta.
