Read the individual game’s current Steam Features row before buying, then verify the controller mapping, save-host rules, platform combination, and player limit that apply to your group.

What Steam’s feature labels actually tell you
Steam presents compatibility as separate capabilities rather than one “works everywhere” certification. A game can support Steam Cloud but not cross-platform multiplayer, or offer online co-op while giving only partial controller coverage. Treat each label as a specific promise:
- Controller support: Indicates whether the developer has declared gamepad compatibility and, where shown, whether support is full or partial. It does not guarantee that every menu, text field, or action is comfortable without a keyboard.
- Steam Cloud: Indicates that the game is configured to synchronize supported save data through Steam. Cloud synchronization is storage, not a multiplayer service.
- Online co-op, LAN co-op, or shared/split-screen co-op: Identifies how players can join the same farm. A title may support one mode and omit another.
- Cross-Platform Multiplayer: Means the store lists play across at least some different platforms. It does not tell you that every edition, region, console family, or game version can connect.
- Remote Play Together or Remote Play on TV: Lets Steam stream or share a session using Steam’s remote-play features. It is different from native cross-platform multiplayer.
Because labels and limits can change with updates, inspect the current store page for the exact edition you plan to use.

Controller support: what to expect game by game
Stardew Valley: explicit Xbox support, with one keyboard exception
Stardew Valley’s Steam description explicitly says: “Xbox controller support (with rumble)! (Keyboard still required for text input).” That is stronger evidence than a generic gamepad icon: Xbox-style controllers are a declared input target, rumble is supported, and text entry remains a keyboard task. If you plan to name animals, type chat messages, or enter other text, keep a keyboard available or use the platform’s text-input workaround.
The listing also includes shared and split-screen co-op. For local play, the game’s documentation requires a controller for each additional split-screen player, so a keyboard alone is not a substitute for every couch participant.
Sun Haven: usable gamepad support, but “Partial” matters
Steam marks Sun Haven as Partial Controller Support. You can start with an XInput/Xbox-compatible pad, but do not assume that every interface is mapped. Test inventory, menus, dialogue, map controls, and any keyboard-only action before committing to a long-running farm. If a button is missing, Steam Input remapping may help, but the game’s own support label remains partial.
Coral Island: do not infer full support from multiplayer features
Coral Island’s reviewed Steam feature panel lists cloud saves and multiplayer capabilities but does not expose a controller-support label. That absence is not proof that controllers fail; it means the store panel does not establish full or partial support. Check the current title page and test your exact controller and layout before purchase, especially if you intend to play without a keyboard.

Farming Simulator 22: plan for a complex control scheme
The extracted Steam panel does not provide a controller-rating label for Farming Simulator 22. The developer’s multiplayer material does refer to players using controllers, but that is not the same as a complete compatibility rating. Farming equipment, camera controls, vehicle functions, and shortcuts can demand many bindings. Confirm that your preferred gamepad exposes every action you need, and be prepared to combine controller and keyboard input.
Steam Cloud saves are separate from multiplayer
All four reviewed games list Steam Cloud. That means Steam is configured to synchronize supported save data between devices, but it does not guarantee that every setting, mod, profile, or temporary file is included. Cloud synchronization also does not make a multiplayer farm available when its host is offline.
How to switch devices safely
- Open the game’s current Steam store page and verify that Steam Cloud is still listed in the Features row.
- In the Steam client, ensure Cloud synchronization is enabled for the game before you leave the original device.
- Exit the game normally and wait for Steam to finish uploading. Do not shut down or put the device to sleep while a sync is pending.
- On the second device, start Steam and allow the download to complete before launching the game.
- If Steam presents a cloud-conflict prompt, compare the local and cloud timestamps and choose deliberately. The newer timestamp is not automatically the save you want.
Keep an independent backup of an important farm. Cloud sync can propagate an unwanted change or an empty/newer file just as readily as a good save.

In Stardew Valley co-op, the host owns the world save. Farmhands may have their own character progress, but they cannot enter that world while the host is offline. Steam Cloud can move the host’s save between the host’s devices; it does not transfer ownership to another player or turn the farm into an always-available shared world.

Multiplayer modes and player counts
Stardew Valley
The store listing advertises “8 Player Farming! Invite 1-7 players to join you in the valley online!” The game supports online, LAN, and shared/split-screen co-op, plus Remote Play Together. For local split-screen, connect one controller for each additional player. Cross-platform play is generally unsupported, with the documented exception of play between PC versions; a PC player should not assume that a console friend can join.
Sun Haven
Sun Haven’s store description says you can “Share a farm and play with up to 8 friends online, or keep to yourself and play solo.” The wording counts friends rather than giving a separate total-player figure, so organize your group around the game’s current in-client limit instead of assuming that every platform supports the same number. The cited feature set confirms online co-op but does not establish cross-platform play.
Coral Island
Coral Island advertises online co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer. Its store wording is precise: “Team up with up to 3 friends (4 farmers total) to build the farm of your dreams!” Four farmers is the stated total. Cross-platform availability is a listed feature, but platform and version requirements still need checking before your group buys different editions.

Farming Simulator 22 lists online co-op, Cross-Platform Multiplayer, and Remote Play on TV. In the developer’s 2021 official multiplayer article, the stated limit is up to six players when a console hosts. That qualifier matters: hosting platform can affect the maximum, so confirm the current limit in the game’s multiplayer screen for your host device.

Cross-platform play is not automatic
A cross-platform label is meaningful only for the platforms and versions the developer supports. Before purchasing, write down each player’s device, store edition, and game version. Then confirm all three of these points:
- The game lists cross-platform multiplayer, rather than only online co-op.
- Your specific platform pair is supported; “PC” can encompass different builds, and console editions may have separate restrictions.
- Everyone is patched to a compatible version and can use the same invite or account system.
For Stardew Valley, the documented position is the opposite: cross-platform play is generally unsupported except between PC versions. Coral Island and Farming Simulator 22 list cross-platform multiplayer, while the cited Sun Haven information does not advertise it.
Pre-session setup checklist
- Check the store page: In Steam, open the game’s current store listing and read the Features row for controller, Steam Cloud, co-op, LAN, Remote Play, and cross-platform labels.
- Match the controller: Identify whether you are using an Xbox/XInput pad, a PlayStation-layout pad through Steam Input, or another device. Test every important binding in a new game.
- Test text entry: Open chat, naming, search, or other text fields. Stardew Valley explicitly still requires a keyboard for text input; partial or unlisted support in other games may have similar gaps.
- Confirm cloud status: Enable Steam Cloud, close the game normally, and wait for the upload indicator to finish before changing devices.
- Choose the host: The host should be the person whose device and connection are most reliable. In Stardew Valley, that person also owns the farm save.
- Verify the group: Check platform, edition, version, and current player limit for every participant.
- Prepare local co-op: Connect one controller per additional couch player and test joining from the title screen or multiplayer menu.
Troubleshooting common failures
The controller works in Steam but not in the game
Recheck the game’s own support label. Stardew Valley has explicit Xbox support; Sun Haven is partial; Coral Island and Farming Simulator 22 do not provide a controller rating in the reviewed panel. Try the controller before launching, then review Steam Input’s per-game layout and remove conflicting virtual devices. If only text fields fail, keep a keyboard connected rather than replacing a working gameplay setup.

Stop launching the game repeatedly. Check which device has the newer local save, inspect Steam’s cloud-conflict timestamps, and select the intended copy. Let synchronization finish before opening the game again. For a co-op farm, verify that you are signed into the host’s account; a farmhand cannot open the host’s world independently in Stardew Valley.

A friend cannot join a cross-platform session
Confirm that the title lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer, then compare everyone’s platform and version. Coral Island and Farming Simulator 22 advertise the feature, but the supported combinations can still be narrower than the label suggests. Stardew Valley generally does not support cross-platform play outside PC-to-PC. Sun Haven’s cited listing confirms online co-op but does not establish cross-platform support.
The room is full before the advertised number
Read whether the figure counts total farmers or invited friends. Stardew Valley states eight players total. Coral Island states four farmers total. Sun Haven says up to eight friends, using different wording. Farming Simulator 22’s cited six-player figure applies when a console hosts. Hosting platform and the current game version can therefore change the practical limit.
Which compatibility profile fits your group?
- You want the clearest gamepad guarantee: Stardew Valley has the most explicit controller statement, including Xbox support and rumble, but retain a keyboard for text input.
- You need a large online group: Stardew Valley advertises eight players, while Sun Haven advertises up to eight friends. Confirm the live lobby limit and whether your count includes the host.
- You need cross-platform play: Coral Island and Farming Simulator 22 list it. Check the exact platform pairing and version before everyone buys.
- You want local couch co-op: Stardew Valley explicitly supports shared/split-screen play; plan one controller for every additional local player.
- You are moving a farm between computers: All four list Steam Cloud, but synchronization does not change multiplayer ownership. Close the game cleanly, wait for uploads, and preserve a backup of valuable saves.
The reliable method is title-by-title verification: read the current Steam Features row, test your input hardware, establish who hosts and owns the save, and confirm platform limits before starting a farm you expect to keep for months.
