Sometimes, but not automatically. A Steam demo and its full game normally use separate Steam app IDs. Your progress carries over only when the developer deliberately makes the two versions recognize the same save data, usually through shared local files or shared Steam Cloud storage.
Before buying, look for an explicit transfer statement in the demo’s store description, manual, in-game message, or the publisher’s support page. If the documentation is silent, assume the transfer is unconfirmed, keep the demo installed, and protect its save until the full game has launched successfully.

Why Steam cannot guarantee a demo-to-full-game save transfer
Steam distributes a demo as a separate application from the commercial release. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes demos as separate app IDs and explains that developers can reduce upgrade friction by sharing depots and cloud storage. That architecture leaves the save decision to each game’s developer; Steam itself does not impose one universal carryover rule.
The full game must know where the demo stored its files, understand the demo’s save format, and decide which data is safe to import. A developer may connect both applications to one Steam Cloud location, point them at the same local folder, add a first-launch import routine, or intentionally keep the versions isolated. If none of those links exists, buying the full game gives you a new save rather than a continuation.

Steam Cloud is therefore a delivery mechanism, not a compatibility guarantee. The developer has to configure both app IDs to share storage and make the full game recognize the files. Simply enabling Cloud for your account cannot convert an incompatible demo save.
The three policies you will encounter

These policies can differ even between games from the same publisher. A demo may also transfer only selected information, such as unlocked characters or a reward flag, rather than every quest, inventory item, or world state.
Official examples show why the title matters
A documented “yes”: Dinkum
Dinkum’s official FAQ gives a direct instruction: "Yes! You can continue your progress by loading your demo save file in the full game. Just make sure to install the full game after purchase." In that case, the supported order is to buy and install the full release, then load the existing demo save from the full game. The statement is specific to Dinkum; it is not a Steam-wide promise.
A documented “no”
An official demo manual for another game states: "Save data cannot be transferred from the demo version to the full version." When a publisher uses wording this clear, assume the restriction is intentional. Cloud synchronization may still occur within the demo, but it will not make that save readable by the full release.

Why undocumented games are uncertain
Some developers explain the behavior only in a launch notice, a readme file, or an in-game prompt. Others do not document it at all. Silence does not mean either yes or no: the implementation could work but be undisclosed, or the two versions could use incompatible storage. The safest interpretation is “not confirmed.”
How to verify compatibility before you buy
- Read the demo’s Steam store page. Search the description, announcements, and recent developer updates for phrases such as “continue your progress,” “carry over,” “transfer save,” or “import demo save.” Treat a statement about rewards only as a rewards transfer, not proof that your complete save will load.
- Open the supplied manual or readme. A downloadable manual can state either a supported import sequence or an explicit prohibition. The negative wording is just as important as a positive promise.
- Check the publisher’s FAQ or support page. Prefer instructions that name the demo and full release and explain when the transfer occurs. A generic sentence that the game supports Steam Cloud does not answer the demo question.
- Look for an in-game transfer notice. Some demos display a message when you quit or reach the end of available content. Capture the wording or note whether it mentions a one-time import, a reward code, or a save file.
- Confirm the platform. A desktop transfer may not behave identically on Steam Deck or another device. Square Enix documents a case in which moving progress to Steam Deck occurs through Steam Cloud, so the device and synchronization path matter.
- If nothing is documented, plan for uncertainty. Keep the demo installed and do not remove its save until the purchased game has loaded and displayed the expected progress.
Protect your demo save before installing the full game
Do not treat an uninstall as harmless. Dinkum warns that when Steam Cloud is disabled and the save exists only on the computer, uninstalling the demo can delete that local data. Other games may behave similarly.
- Finish playing the demo, exit normally, and wait for Steam to finish any visible synchronization.
- Leave the demo installed while you purchase and install the full game.
- Keep Steam Cloud enabled for the title when the game supports it, but remember that this does not create compatibility by itself.
- For a local backup, use the game’s documented save location or support instructions to copy the save folder to another drive. Do not rename, edit, or replace files unless the publisher explicitly instructs you to do so.
- Record which Steam account and device contain the working save. Cloud data belongs to the account and app configuration, not merely to the computer on which you played.
If you cannot identify the save location, the safest backup is simply to leave the demo installed and untouched until the full game has been tested.

Shared Steam Cloud storage
Steamworks describes shared cloud storage as a common way to share saved games between a demo and its full game. The demo uploads files under a configuration that the full app also reads. On first launch of the full game, it may find the files automatically or present an import choice.

This only works when the developer has configured both app IDs and the save format remains compatible. A green “Cloud” status in Steam confirms synchronization, not that the full game will understand the contents.
Shared local files
Some titles have both versions read the same folder on the device. The full game can then see the demo save without a separate cloud step. This approach is vulnerable to uninstallers, file permissions, and different folders on Windows, Linux, macOS, or Steam Deck, so follow the game’s own instructions.
Manual import
A game may ask you to browse to the demo save, copy a file, or select an import command. Manual import is supported only when the developer documents the required file and format. Copying an arbitrary save into a similarly named folder can corrupt data or overwrite a newer full-game save.

The full game may convert the demo file once, then write it in a new format. It may also import only campaign progress, unlocks, or a completion reward. Make a backup before accepting a conversion because the original file might not remain usable by the demo afterward.

Safe installation and first-launch procedure
- Close the demo after saving. Avoid leaving it running while the full game is installed or while Cloud synchronization is pending.
- Buy and install the full game. Follow the supported sequence documented by the developer; Dinkum specifically tells players to install the full game after purchase before loading the demo save.
- Start the full game once. Watch for wording such as “demo save detected,” “continue,” “import,” or “convert.” Do not create a new profile if the game is still scanning for an existing save.
- Choose the documented source. If the game offers local and cloud copies, select the one that contains your latest demo session. When the instructions are unclear, stop and consult the title’s support material rather than guessing.
- Load and inspect the result. Check a recognizable location, inventory, unlock, or playtime from the demo. A successful launch alone does not prove that all progress transferred.
- Save in the full game and allow synchronization. Exit normally and wait until Steam reports that the full game’s save is synchronized before removing the demo.
Troubleshooting when the full game starts from zero
The game does not detect any save
Do not overwrite the demo file with a new full-game save yet. Exit, relaunch the demo once to confirm the original progress is still present, and wait for any Cloud operation to finish. Then verify that you bought the full game on the same Steam account and that the developer actually documents a transfer path. If the policy is undocumented, the missing save may reflect an unsupported design rather than a Steam error.
Cloud shows an error or an old version
Keep both applications installed. A Cloud conflict can present local and remote copies; choose only after checking which one contains your latest demo session. Do not assume the newest timestamp is the most advanced save. If synchronization repeatedly fails, preserve the local file and follow the game’s support procedure before uninstalling anything.
The demo save loads but progress is incomplete
Partial transfer may be intentional. Compare the developer’s wording with what you see: an unlock or reward transfer is narrower than a complete campaign continuation. If the game promises full carryover but omits items or quests, report the specific missing data to the publisher with the demo and full-game versions, platform, and save location.

If the save was local-only, uninstalling may have removed it. Check the platform’s recycle bin or backup system only if the game’s documentation identifies the relevant folder, and avoid downloading unofficial save files. If Cloud was enabled and configured for both apps, reinstalling the demo and signing into the same account may allow it to resynchronize; otherwise, recovery depends on the game’s own backup support.
Steam Deck and moving between devices
Switching from a desktop to Steam Deck adds another layer: the two devices may use different local paths, while the intended bridge is Steam Cloud. Square Enix documents a transfer case that relies on Steam Cloud for Steam Deck. This does not establish that every game behaves the same way.
- Complete a save on the original device and wait for Steam to finish synchronizing before suspending or shutting down.
- On the new device, install the same demo or full game under the same account and wait for Cloud synchronization before launching.
- If the game offers both local and cloud copies, choose the copy that matches the completed demo session.
- Do not delete the original device’s local save until the full game has loaded and saved successfully on the new device.
Cross-device transfer can fail even when demo-to-full conversion works on one machine, because the developer may support only one platform’s file layout or may require a specific Cloud configuration.
A practical decision checklist

Bottom line for your purchase decision
Buy the full game expecting continuity only when its developer explicitly supports demo-save transfer. A documented “yes,” such as Dinkum’s instruction to install the full game and load the demo save, is a reliable basis for proceeding. A documented “no” means you will start over. If there is no statement, preserve the demo, keep Cloud enabled where supported, install the full game, and test the first launch before deleting anything.
