Yes. A soundbar needs electrical power, normally from a wall outlet. Depending on the model, its power cord may plug directly into an AC socket on the bar or into an external AC adapter that feeds a DC input. A wireless subwoofer can also require its own outlet because “wireless” describes its audio connection, not how it receives electricity.
The safe choice is always the cord or adapter specified for the exact model. Connector shape alone is not enough: voltage, current rating, polarity, plug type, and regional electrical requirements must also match.

How a soundbar gets electrical power
Soundbars contain amplifiers, signal processing, wireless radios, and speakers. Those circuits require a continuous electrical supply while the unit is operating, so a typical soundbar is not a battery-powered device. The audio signal may arrive wirelessly from a television or phone, but the soundbar still has to be connected to mains electricity.
Manufacturers use two common arrangements:
- Direct AC connection: A detachable or fixed mains cable runs from the soundbar’s AC input to a wall outlet or surge-protected power strip.
- External AC adapter: A wall cable powers a separate adapter. The adapter converts household AC to low-voltage DC, and its output lead plugs into a socket labeled something such as “DC IN.”
These designs are not interchangeable. An adapter-based bar may be damaged if connected to mains voltage directly, while a bar designed for direct AC cannot be powered by an arbitrary low-voltage adapter.

Two real connection layouts
External adapter and DC input
One Philips setup manual shows a mains adapter connected to the soundbar’s “DC IN 24V” socket, with the adapter then plugged into a wall outlet. The 24-volt figure belongs to that particular model; it is not a universal soundbar standard. Read the rating printed on your own unit before choosing an adapter.
An LG quick guide illustrates a similar arrangement: the mains cable connects to an AC adapter, the adapter’s output lead connects to the bar’s DC IN terminal, and the mains plug goes to the outlet. LG specifically instructs owners to use the provided adapter.
Direct mains cable
Other Philips product instructions show a mains cable going straight into the soundbar’s AC input before being connected to an outlet. In this configuration there may be no external power brick to replace. The cable and plug still need to match the model and the electrical standards of the country where it is used.
Does “wireless” mean the soundbar has no cord?
No. In product descriptions, “wireless” usually refers to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or a proprietary radio link carrying audio from another device. It does not mean the soundbar generates its own power. The main bar normally remains plugged in during use.

The same distinction applies to a wireless subwoofer. Its audio connection to the soundbar can be wireless while its amplifier still draws power from a separate wall outlet. LG’s SP7R setup instructions show a power cable running from the wireless subwoofer to an outlet, and a Philips guide likewise gives the subwoofer its own mains connection.
Some systems also have wireless rear speakers. Treat each powered component separately: check whether the rear units use a wall adapter, an internal rechargeable battery, or another arrangement stated in their manual. Do not assume that one cord powers every speaker in the package.
What is normally included in the box?
Accessory contents vary by model, package, sales region, and sometimes retail bundle. A product guide for Roku Streambar products states that the included cable should be used. That is a model-specific instruction, not proof that every soundbar package contains the same cable or adapter.

How to identify the correct replacement
Start with the label on the rear or underside of the soundbar and the electrical specifications in its manual. Record the exact model designation, input type, voltage, current or wattage rating, polarity symbol if the unit uses DC, and the plug style required in your region.
For an external adapter
- Confirm the adapter’s output voltage matches the value printed on the soundbar or in its manual.
- Choose an adapter with the required current capacity (or wattage). A lower rating can cause shutdowns or overheating; a higher-capacity unit is acceptable only when all other specifications and the manufacturer’s guidance permit it.
- Match the polarity shown by the center-positive or center-negative symbol, where one is provided.
- Match the DC connector dimensions, including barrel diameter and pin size. A plug that fits loosely or forces into the socket is unsafe.
- Use the correct regional wall plug and an adapter designed for the local mains voltage and frequency.
For a direct AC cord
- Check the connector shape at the soundbar, such as a figure-eight or another appliance inlet.
- Verify the cord’s voltage, current, insulation, and grounding requirements against the manual.
- Use a plug and fuse arrangement approved for your country.
- Follow any instruction to use the manufacturer-supplied cord. Sonos, for example, tells Arc owners to use only the supplied power cord and warns that a third-party cord affects the warranty.
Never select a replacement solely because its connector appears identical. Philips instructs users to ensure that supply voltage corresponds to the voltage printed on the unit, and LG tells users to use the provided AC adapter. Those warnings address electrical compatibility, not just physical fit.
Safe setup procedure
- Locate the model information. Photograph the rear label or write down the full model number, including suffixes that identify a regional variant.
- Read the power section of the manual. Determine whether the unit has an AC input or a DC IN socket and note every printed rating.
- Inspect the supplied parts. Check the cord, adapter, plug, and connectors for cuts, bent pins, cracked insulation, or heat damage. Do not use a damaged part.
- Place the soundbar before connecting it. Leave ventilation space and keep the adapter brick away from heat sources, rugs that trap heat, and areas where it can be crushed.
- Connect the low-voltage side first when an adapter is used. Insert the adapter’s output plug fully into the soundbar’s DC IN socket, then connect the mains lead to the adapter and outlet as the manual shows.
- For a direct-AC model, seat the appliance connector firmly in the bar before plugging the wall end into the outlet.
- Power the subwoofer separately if instructed. Its wireless pairing does not remove the need for its own electrical connection.
- Turn on the system and check standby behavior. A status light, display, or startup tone should appear according to the manual. Do not repeatedly cycle a unit that smells burnt, sparks, or becomes unusually hot.
What to check when the soundbar will not turn on
Troubleshoot from the wall toward the soundbar so that each part of the power path is verified once.

- Test the outlet. Plug in a lamp or another known-working device, or reset a tripped circuit breaker or ground-fault device if appropriate.
- Check the wall plug and power strip. Make sure a switched strip is turned on and that the plug is fully inserted.
- Inspect the cord and adapter. Look for cuts, fraying, bent contacts, rattling, discoloration, or a hot plastic smell. Replace damaged parts with model-approved components rather than taping them.
- Check the soundbar-side connection. TCL’s support guidance for its listed models specifically says to verify that the AC power cord and AC input connector are connected properly.
- Confirm the adapter rating. If a replacement was recently installed, compare its output voltage, current, polarity, and connector with the model label.
- Try the manufacturer’s reset or standby procedure. Use only the button sequence documented for the exact model; a remote-control battery problem can look like a power failure when the front-panel button still works.
- Stop if there is evidence of an electrical fault. Smoke, sparks, liquid intrusion, repeated breaker trips, or a burning odor calls for unplugging the unit and contacting the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Can one soundbar’s cord be used with another?
Sometimes a detachable mains cord with the same approved connector and electrical rating can be shared, but that conclusion must come from the manuals or manufacturer specifications. Adapter outputs are more model-specific. Two plugs can have the same barrel size while delivering different voltage, current, or polarity.

Finding a replacement without guessing
Search using the exact model number, not only a phrase such as “soundbar power cord.” For an adapter-based design, a query like soundbar AC adapter for [exact model] narrows results, but every listing still needs to be checked against the electrical specifications. For a direct-cord design, include the model and connector type.
The manufacturer’s support or replacement-parts channel is the safest source when available. If buying from another seller, compare photographs and printed labels, request confirmation of voltage, current, polarity, and plug region, and retain the receipt. A marketplace listing that says “fits many soundbars” does not establish compatibility with yours.
Power cords, HDMI, and optical cables are different
A soundbar may require several cables, and only one is the power connection. HDMI ARC or eARC, optical, USB, and analog cables carry audio or control signals; they do not normally supply enough power to run the bar’s amplifier. A television’s USB port may power a small accessory or wake signal, but it should not be treated as a substitute for the soundbar’s specified mains supply unless the manual explicitly says so.
This distinction explains why a bar can show an audio connection yet remain silent: the HDMI or optical link may be correct while the separate power path is absent.

Regional and model differences to keep in mind
Wall outlets, plug shapes, mains voltages, and included accessories differ by country. A cord supplied with a North American package may not be appropriate for a model sold elsewhere, even when the soundbar name is similar. Some products use a universal-range adapter; others require a region-specific supply. Read the rating label rather than assuming that a travel plug or simple mechanical converter changes the electrical voltage.
Model revisions can also change the connector or adapter rating. Keep the full suffix from the label when contacting support, and do not rely on a picture of an older revision.

No universal packaging rule is established. Roku specifies an included cable for the Streambar and soundbar products covered by its guide, while other packages may use an adapter or vary by market. Check the exact box-contents list.
Can I use any adapter that fits?
No. Match voltage, current, polarity, connector, and regional plug requirements, and follow the manufacturer’s instruction to use the supplied or approved part.
What if the subwoofer is wireless?
It may still need a dedicated power cord and outlet. Wireless audio pairing does not provide electrical power.
What should I buy when the original part is lost?
