Do Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones support lossless Hi-Res Audio over Bluetooth?

They support Hi-Res Audio Wireless over Bluetooth through LDAC, but LDAC is a lossy codec, not a strictly lossless, bit-for-bit connection. To use that higher-quality wireless path, both the WH-1000XM5 and the playback device must support LDAC.

The WH-1000XM5 can receive high-resolution music over Bluetooth, but the phrase “Hi-Res Audio Wireless” does not mean that the Bluetooth signal is transmitted without any data reduction. Sony lists the headphones’ supported Bluetooth codecs as SBC, AAC and LDAC, and associates their Hi-Res Audio Wireless capability with LDAC. Sony also explains that LDAC uses lossy compression, so the decoded waveform is not identical to the original source waveform.

What the WH-1000XM5 actually supports

Sony’s specifications list Bluetooth 5.2 and three audio codecs for the WH-1000XM5: SBC, AAC and LDAC. The same specification page identifies support for both High-Resolution Audio and High-Resolution Audio Wireless through LDAC: Sony’s WH-1000XM5 specifications.

Term or feature What it means for the WH-1000XM5
Bluetooth version Bluetooth 5.2, according to Sony’s specifications

Strict lossless Bluetooth transmission Not supported through LDAC; Sony describes LDAC as using lossy compression

Why “Hi-Res Audio Wireless” is not the same as lossless

“Lossless” normally means that decoding reproduces the encoded audio data exactly. A lossless codec can reduce file size while retaining every sample, allowing the original digital data to be reconstructed. A lossy codec removes or changes information during encoding, so the output is not mathematically identical to the input.

Sony’s own LDAC explanation makes this distinction explicit. It says that lossy compression produces waveforms that are not identical before and after compression. Sony nevertheless describes LDAC as capable of transmitting Hi-Res Audio content while maintaining Hi-Res Audio sound quality over Bluetooth. Those statements describe different properties: the source can remain a high-resolution source and the wireless path can qualify as Hi-Res Audio Wireless, while the codec still discards some information.

Sony gives the practical reason for the compromise. In its LDAC explainer, Sony refers to Bluetooth bandwidth of approximately 1 Mbps and Hi-Res Audio content requiring about 4.6 Mbps. Because the wireless link cannot carry all of that source data in its original form, LDAC compresses it. The figures are Sony’s explanatory values, not an independent measurement of every WH-1000XM5 connection: Sony’s LDAC end-user explainer.

How LDAC works with the WH-1000XM5

The headphones support LDAC, but they do not force every Bluetooth connection to use it. The source device—such as a phone, tablet, computer or dedicated player—must also implement LDAC. If it does not, the connection uses another mutually supported codec, such as AAC or SBC.

Sony’s WH-1000XM5 Help Guide describes SBC, AAC and LDAC as the codecs available for music playback through an A2DP Bluetooth connection. It says LDAC can carry Hi-Res Audio content over Bluetooth without down-conversion of that content, with DSD content identified as an exception. “Without down-conversion” in this context does not mean “without compression”: LDAC can avoid reducing the source’s nominal sample-rate or bit-depth category while still applying lossy coding. The details appear in the WH-1000XM5 Help Guide.

Sony’s three-times-data statement

Sony says LDAC can transmit approximately three times more data than conventional SBC under specified high-bitrate comparison conditions. The Help Guide qualifies the comparison as SBC at 990 kbps for 96/48 kHz content or 909 kbps for 88.2/44.1 kHz content. This is a manufacturer-stated comparison, not evidence that every connection runs at the highest LDAC rate or that LDAC becomes lossless.

LDAC can negotiate different operating rates depending on the source device, radio conditions and other implementation choices. The WH-1000XM5’s support for LDAC therefore establishes compatibility with the codec, not a guaranteed bitrate in every room, with every phone or under every interference level.

Bluetooth route versus the included cable

The WH-1000XM5 includes a connection cable as well as a USB cable, so you can use a wired path instead of Bluetooth. A cable removes the LDAC Bluetooth codec from that particular link, but the available evidence does not establish the resolution or lossless behavior of every wired source-to-headphone setup. The result can depend on the source’s headphone output, the application, volume controls, digital-to-analog conversion and whether any processing occurs before the signal reaches the headphones.

Question Bluetooth with LDAC Wired connection
Does the source need a matching codec? Yes. Both source and headphones must support LDAC. No Bluetooth codec negotiation is required.
Is the link strictly lossless? No. Sony describes LDAC as lossy. Not established for every source, app or setup.
Can it carry a Hi-Res source? Yes, through the Hi-Res Audio Wireless LDAC pathway, subject to device compatibility. Potentially, but the exact behavior depends on the wired equipment and signal path.
What is guaranteed by the model specification? LDAC, AAC and SBC support. A connection cable is supplied; universal lossless specifications are not stated.

How to make sure a Bluetooth connection uses LDAC

There is no single Bluetooth-settings path that applies to every operating system or manufacturer. Sony cautions that matching profiles and codecs still do not guarantee a connection with every Bluetooth device. Use this verification process rather than assuming that pairing automatically selected LDAC.

  1. Check the source device’s specifications. Confirm that the phone, computer or player supports LDAC. The headphones’ LDAC support alone cannot add LDAC to a source that lacks it.
  2. Pair the headphones normally. Select the WH-1000XM5 in the source device’s Bluetooth settings and complete pairing.
  3. Look for the codec setting. On devices that expose codec controls, open the connected WH-1000XM5’s Bluetooth details and select LDAC or enable the device’s high-quality/LDAC option. The wording and location vary by operating system and manufacturer.
  4. Confirm the active codec if the device reports it. Some sources show the negotiated codec or bitrate; others do not. If no status is displayed, you cannot assume that LDAC is active solely from the fact that the headphones are connected.
  5. Test stability at your listening location. High-rate Bluetooth modes can be more sensitive to distance, walls and radio interference. If the connection drops or stutters, move the source closer, reduce nearby interference or choose the source’s more stable LDAC mode when available.

A streaming service or music file also needs to contain a suitable high-resolution source for LDAC to matter. LDAC does not upgrade a low-resolution or already-lossy recording into lossless audio; it only defines how the source is encoded for the Bluetooth hop.

What happens when LDAC is unavailable

The source supports AAC or SBC only

The headphones can still play music using AAC or SBC, because both are listed in Sony’s supported codec set. The connection will not be the LDAC Hi-Res Audio Wireless path.

The source claims LDAC but will not connect at high quality

Check that the headphones are paired with the intended source, that no second device has taken the active connection, and that the source’s codec controls have not fallen back to another mode. Sony’s compatibility guidance warns that support for the same Bluetooth profiles and codecs does not guarantee operation with every device: Sony’s Bluetooth compatibility guidance.

The connection is unstable

Bluetooth performance is affected by distance and radio congestion. Keep the source nearby, avoid placing it behind your body or inside a bag, and try a lower or more stable codec setting if the source offers one. Stability is a practical trade-off, not evidence that the headphones have stopped supporting LDAC.

The music is advertised as lossless

A lossless streaming tier or lossless file describes the source before transmission. Once that source is sent through LDAC, Sony’s description of lossy compression still applies. To avoid making a claim stronger than the equipment supports, describe the result as lossless source material delivered over a lossy LDAC Bluetooth link.

What “Hi-Res” can and cannot tell you about sound

Hi-Res labels describe the format or transmission pathway, not a guarantee that every listener will hear an audible improvement. The final result also depends on the recording and master, the playback application, the negotiated codec mode, radio conditions, headphone tuning and any signal processing. The available Sony documentation establishes codec support and transmission design; it does not provide listening-test results for every device or environment.

For the WH-1000XM5 specifically, the defensible technical description is: it can receive compatible high-resolution content over Bluetooth using LDAC, and LDAC is designed to preserve a high-resolution pathway without the same down-conversion described for lower Bluetooth modes, except for Sony’s stated DSD qualification. It is not defensible to call that Bluetooth connection bit-perfect or strictly lossless.

Buying and setup implications

If LDAC is important to you, evaluate the source device as carefully as the headphones. Purchasing the WH-1000XM5 does not make LDAC available on every phone, computer or music player. Confirm source compatibility before relying on the wireless feature, and check whether your operating system exposes a way to verify the active codec.

If your priority is avoiding Bluetooth codec compression altogether, use the supplied connection cable and investigate the complete wired signal chain. The cable provides an alternative to Bluetooth, but Sony’s published information cited here does not certify every wired configuration as lossless at a particular resolution. Treat that route as a way to bypass LDAC compression, not as a universal guarantee about all wired playback.

Bottom line

The Sony WH-1000XM5 supports Hi-Res Audio Wireless over Bluetooth through LDAC, provided the playback device supports LDAC too. LDAC can carry high-resolution content and Sony says it transmits substantially more data than SBC under specified conditions, but Sony also explicitly characterizes LDAC as lossy compression. Therefore, the accurate answer is yes to Hi-Res Audio Wireless; no to strictly lossless Hi-Res Audio over Bluetooth.
