Sometimes—but a battery-powered door sensor is only one layer of the system. During an internet outage, the sensor may still report to a powered hub and trigger local automation or a siren, while phone notifications and app control fail. During a power outage, the sensor battery may remain charged, but the hub, router, modem, and alarm equipment can shut down unless they have backup power. Cellular failover can preserve selected alarm communications, but it depends on the exact product, subscription, coverage, and operating mode.
To predict what will happen, check three layers: the sensor’s battery, the hub or base station’s power and offline behavior, and the communications path used for remote alerts.

What can still work when the internet is down?
An internet outage and a power outage are different failures. If your home still has electricity, a door sensor can often communicate with its hub over the system’s local radio protocol. The hub may then run an offline automation or sound a local alarm. Anything that must travel through the vendor’s cloud—such as a push notification, remote arm command, live camera view, or account update—needs another working route.

Local detection and automation
A sensor can detect that a magnet has separated even when the broadband connection is unavailable. Whether that event produces a useful response depends on the hub’s firmware and the automation design. Aqara says its M1S hub keeps local automations functioning when the internet connection goes down. That means a supported local rule can continue to operate without cloud access; it does not mean every integration or app feature remains available.

Remote notifications
A phone alert requires a communications path from the hub to the service and then to your phone. If the home router has no internet and the system has no cellular backup, the event may remain local until the connection returns. A vendor’s statement that a system works offline should therefore be read as a statement about specified local or alarm functions, not a guarantee of push notifications.
What changes during a power outage?
When mains power fails, the sensor and the rest of the installation can have different outcomes. Many contact sensors use a coin cell or other battery and may continue detecting openings. The hub must also stay powered and able to receive those transmissions. If the router and modem are off, normal cloud access is lost even if the sensor and hub remain active.
Sensor battery is not system backup
Aqara’s standard Door and Window Sensor requires an Aqara hub. Aqara states that the sensor battery lasts two years under normal usage, and that sensors compatible with the M1S have 2+ year battery life. Those figures describe the sensor under the manufacturer’s stated conditions; they do not provide power to the hub, router, modem, siren, or cellular equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHub and base-station backup
A hub with a rechargeable battery can continue receiving sensors after the mains supply disappears. The available functions may be deliberately reduced to extend runtime. Some systems keep monitoring and a local siren active but disable cameras, Wi-Fi, displays, or other power-hungry features. A base station that has no backup may stop receiving sensors as soon as its adapter loses power.

Router and modem backup
Even a hub with battery backup cannot use an internet-based alert path if the home’s networking equipment is unpowered. To preserve broadband communications, the modem, router, and any required network switch would all need power. If the alarm system offers cellular failover, it may bypass that equipment, but only for the functions and plans the manufacturer supports.
What “works” can mean
Outage claims are easy to misunderstand because they can refer to different steps in the chain:
- Detection: the contact sensor notices that the door opened.
- Reception: the hub receives the radio transmission.
- Local response: an automation, chime, or siren runs at the property.
- Alarm transmission: the base station sends an event through cellular or another backup path.
- Remote service: the cloud records the event and delivers a notification or enables app control.
A system may retain the first three while losing the last two. Read the exact outage documentation for your model instead of treating “works without internet” as an all-features promise.

Ring’s 24/7 Backup Internet service provides 3 GB of cellular data per month for eligible Alarm Pro setups; additional data may incur charges. This is a product- and subscription-specific service, not a general property of battery-powered door sensors. An optional compatible Power Pack is specified by Ring to provide up to eight hours of backup power per pack. Neither figure guarantees that cameras, Wi-Fi, or every smart-home feature will remain active.
SimpliSafe Base Station
SimpliSafe states that its Base Station can operate for up to 24 hours on its rechargeable backup batteries. During a power outage, the keypad can be used to arm or disarm the system while the mobile app and online-account remote control are restricted to conserve battery. SimpliSafe describes cellular backup with a professional monitoring plan and documents outage or restoration notifications where applicable.
One SimpliSafe support specification identifies four 1.2-volt, 1,300-mAh NiMH batteries in the referenced base station and warns against substituting regular alkaline batteries. Do not generalize that battery specification to every generation or installation.

- Identify the exact sensor and hub. Record model names, hardware generations, and firmware versions. A sensor’s battery rating is not evidence that its hub has backup power.
- Find the outage section in the manufacturer’s support documentation. Look specifically for local automation, siren, keypad, cellular failover, and low-power-mode behavior.
- Check the account plan. Determine whether cellular backup, professional monitoring, or backup internet requires a paid subscription and whether the service is available in your country.
- Inspect battery health. Replace sensor cells before they are depleted, and test the hub’s rechargeable backup battery according to the manufacturer’s procedure. Use only the specified battery chemistry and pack.
- Map the communications path. Note whether alerts use your router and modem, the hub’s cellular radio, or both. Cellular coverage inside the building can differ from phone coverage outdoors.
- Test in a controlled window. With household members informed, disconnect broadband while leaving mains power on and open the protected door. Then test mains failure separately. Record whether the hub logs the event, a siren sounds, a keypad works, and a phone receives an alert.
- Restore and verify. Reconnect power and internet, confirm that the system reports normal status, and check that delayed events and notifications are not stuck in a queue.
Troubleshooting common outage surprises
The sensor shows a low-battery warning
Replace the cell with the exact type listed for the sensor and confirm that the magnet and contact are aligned. A battery that still operates the sensor may not provide reliable range or frequent-event performance.

The local siren works but no phone alert arrives
This usually indicates that detection and local processing survived, while the cloud route did not. Check router and modem power, cellular-backup enrollment, subscription status, and signal coverage. Do not assume that adding a sensor battery will restore a missing network path.
The app cannot arm or disarm the system
Some systems intentionally disable remote app control during battery operation. Use the keypad or other locally documented control, then wait for normal power and connectivity before treating the lack of app access as a fault.
The base station shuts down quickly
Published maximum runtimes depend on usage, battery age, temperature, radio traffic, and which features remain enabled. Cameras, Wi-Fi, repeated alarms, and weak cellular conditions can reduce runtime. Check whether the backup battery is fully charged and whether the system has entered its specified low-power mode.
A cellular backup feature is unavailable
Verify that the hardware supports it, the required plan is active, the region is eligible, and the cellular network is reachable at the installation. Cellular failover is not automatically included with every alarm subscription.

Choosing and maintaining outage resilience
When comparing systems, use these criteria rather than the sensor’s advertised battery life alone:
- Sensor-to-hub protocol and whether a hub is mandatory.
- Which local detections, automations, chimes, and sirens continue without cloud access.
- Base-station battery capacity, low-power behavior, and the conditions behind the stated runtime.
- Whether the router and modem need separate backup power for broadband alerts.
- Cellular failover coverage, geography, data allowance, and subscription requirements.
- Which app, camera, Wi-Fi, and monitoring functions are disabled during backup operation.
- How the system reports a power failure, low battery, loss of internet, and restoration.
A generic uninterruptible power supply may be considered for networking equipment or a hub, but compatibility, runtime, and safe configuration must be established for the specific installation. Do not assume that powering one device preserves the entire alarm path.
How long will an alarm work without power?
There is no universal runtime. The documented examples range up to 24 hours for Ring Alarm Pro in Low Power Mode and up to 24 hours for the referenced SimpliSafe Base Station, but those are manufacturer claims for named base stations and operating conditions. Ring Power Packs are specified for up to eight hours each. Actual duration depends on battery age, load, temperature, radio activity, and which features the system disables.
Recommended Free Tools
Sensor batteries can last much longer than a hub backup battery, but that does not make the complete system independent of mains power. Treat the base station’s published runtime as a planning maximum, keep the battery maintained, and arrange another security procedure if an outage is expected to exceed it.
Practical outage checklist
- Keep sensor batteries fresh and record replacement dates.
- Confirm the hub’s backup battery is installed, charged, and supported for your model.
- Know whether your router and modem are on backup power.
- Verify cellular coverage and any monitoring or backup-internet subscription.
- Learn the local keypad or siren behavior before an emergency.
- Test internet loss and mains loss separately at least once after installation changes.
- Review which cameras, Wi-Fi, app controls, and automations are intentionally disabled in low-power mode.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I still get phone notifications if the internet goes out?
Only if the system has another working communications route, such as supported cellular backup. Local detection or a siren can continue while cloud notifications fail.
Does a battery-powered door sensor work if the hub is unplugged?
The sensor may still detect an opening, but a hub-dependent system generally cannot receive or act on that event while the hub is without power.
Is cellular backup included with every smart alarm?
No. Availability, monitoring requirements, data allowances, geography, and charges vary by product and plan.
