Usually, no. Most smart appliances can still perform their basic local job when the internet is down, but app control, remote monitoring, alerts, voice commands and some model-specific features may stop working. The exact offline behavior depends on the appliance and model, so the owner’s manual is the final authority.
What a smart appliance can do without the internet
A smart appliance generally has two layers of functionality. The first is the ordinary operation controlled from the appliance itself: selecting a wash cycle, setting an oven temperature, starting a dryer or running a dishwasher program. The second is the connected layer delivered through Wi-Fi, an app, online services or a voice assistant.

Those layers are not interchangeable. A disconnected oven may still heat and cook from its buttons or dial, while its phone app cannot show progress. A washer may still run a saved cycle locally, while remote start and completion notifications are unavailable. Whirlpool’s smart-oven FAQ says, “If you just want to use your smart oven to cook traditionally, you typically do not need internet access,” while also warning that offline functionality varies by model.

Do not treat “smart” as a guarantee that every function works offline. GE’s support documentation identifies Wi-Fi requirements for particular range and wall-oven families, and the applicable features differ by model and generation. The same caution applies to refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges and dishwashers.

Which features usually require a connection?
| Feature | Connection requirement | What happens when the appliance is offline |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary cooking or a local wash, dry or dishwashing cycle | Often not required, but model-specific | The appliance may continue to operate from its built-in controls. Confirm this in the exact manual. |
| Remote start, pause or control | Usually requires Wi-Fi, the manufacturer’s app and sometimes an enabled remote-access setting | Commands sent from a phone generally fail until connectivity is restored. |
| Progress monitoring | Usually a connected feature | The appliance may keep running, but its status may not appear in the app. |
| Push notifications | Usually requires an active connection and the app service | Cycle-complete, temperature or other alerts may not arrive. |
| Voice control and smart-home integration | Requires supported connectivity, the relevant account and a compatible voice service | Voice commands normally become unavailable, although local controls can still work. |
| In-oven camera or live viewing | Requires Wi-Fi for enablement and continuous connectivity on applicable GE models | Live viewing and related remote functions stop when the connection is lost. |
| Special or downloadable cooking modes | Model-specific; some GE families require Wi-Fi to enable functions such as Air Fry, Precision Cooking, Dehydrate or Voice-to-Open | The feature may not be available to select or activate offline, even if ordinary baking remains usable. |
| Recipes, app content and connected services | Depends on the manufacturer and service | Online content and service-dependent controls are unavailable without their connection. |
The table describes common patterns, not a universal rule. A manufacturer can make one feature local on one generation and connected on another. Check the product page, setup guide and owner’s manual for the exact model number.
Internet versus Wi-Fi: why the distinction matters
People often use “Wi-Fi” and “internet” interchangeably, but troubleshooting is easier when you separate them. Wi-Fi is the local wireless link between the appliance and your router. Internet access is the router’s connection to the manufacturer’s online service.
Some setup procedures require the appliance to join a particular Wi-Fi band. Whirlpool’s instructions for certain washer and dryer flows specify a 2.4 GHz network and caution that the connection method may not work with every router. A phone connected to the same home network does not prove that the appliance can reach the internet or that the router settings are compatible.

A local network problem can therefore look different from an internet-service outage: the appliance may still show as connected to the router but remain unreachable in the app.

What happens during an internet outage?
- Try the appliance’s own controls first. Use the physical buttons, dial or local display to start the ordinary cycle. For an oven, test a conventional cooking mode rather than a connected specialty mode.
- Separate local operation from remote features. If the cycle starts locally but the app cannot connect, the basic appliance function is working and the problem is in the connected layer.
- Expect remote commands and alerts to fail. Remote start, pause, progress displays, camera views, notifications and voice commands generally depend on the network and the manufacturer’s service.
- Do not repeatedly reset a running appliance. A network outage does not automatically mean the appliance has lost its local program. Follow the manual’s instructions before cancelling a cycle or removing power.
- Restore connectivity methodically. Check the router, confirm that the appliance is on the supported band, then reopen the manufacturer’s app. If the model requires remote access to be enabled on the appliance, verify that setting after reconnection.
- Recheck the manual if a feature remains missing. Some functions require a connection every time they are used, not merely during initial setup.
Whirlpool says traditional cooking should generally continue without Wi-Fi on its smart ovens, but directs owners to the model-specific manual. GE likewise identifies features that need Wi-Fi for both enablement and continuous use on specified products.
Examples by appliance type
Smart ovens and ranges
Local baking, roasting or broiling is often available from the oven’s controls without internet access. Connected functions can include remote preheating, status monitoring, notifications, voice commands, camera viewing and special cooking modes. GE’s documentation gives model-qualified examples: Air Fry, Precision Cooking, Dehydrate and Voice-to-Open generally require Wi-Fi on specified families. That does not mean every oven with an Air Fry label has the same requirement.
Washers and dryers
A washer or dryer will often retain its locally selected cycle when the network is unavailable. App-based cycle monitoring, remote controls and completion alerts are separate features. During setup, some Whirlpool washer and dryer instructions call for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and warn that the connection process is not compatible with all routers. If pairing fails, verify the band and router compatibility before assuming the appliance is defective.
Dishwashers
Dishwashing programs selected at the appliance generally belong to the local layer. Connected models may add remote status, reminders or notifications. Whether a particular cycle, downloadable option or control is available offline is model-specific, so use the product’s support documentation rather than assuming all dishwashers behave alike.

Refrigerators and other connected appliances
Cooling and other essential local functions are distinct from app dashboards, alerts and integrations. A disconnected refrigerator may continue its normal operation while its app cannot show status or send notifications. Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove state that wireless internet is required for their app and connected appliance functions, illustrating why the service requirements must be checked by brand and model.
How to troubleshoot a setup that will not connect
1. Confirm the exact model and supported network
Record the full model number, not just the product family. Documentation can distinguish generations that have different Wi-Fi requirements. Look for the supported frequency band, pairing method and any router restrictions.
2. Check the signal where the appliance is installed
A router that works in a nearby room may not provide a reliable signal behind cabinets, metal panels or thick walls. Move the router or improve coverage only if the manufacturer’s requirements indicate that signal strength is the issue.
3. Use the required band
If the setup guide specifies 2.4 GHz, select that band during pairing. Whirlpool’s washer and dryer instructions support this requirement for certain flows; they do not establish that every smart appliance needs a new router. Purchase a different router only when the existing equipment lacks the required band or cannot provide coverage at the appliance.

4. Complete account and app steps
Many connected paths involve the manufacturer’s app, an account and sometimes a compatible voice assistant. A device can be on Wi-Fi yet remain unavailable if the account link or app setup was not completed.
5. Enable remote access where required
Whirlpool identifies remote-enable settings for specified connected features. If remote control is disabled on the appliance, the app may show the product but refuse to start or control it.
6. Retest after the internet is restored
Start with a simple status refresh, then test one remote command and one notification. If local operation works but connected functions do not, consult the model’s support page for service-specific requirements rather than repeatedly factory-resetting the appliance.

| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Offline basics | Which essential functions work from the appliance itself when Wi-Fi and internet access are unavailable? |
| Remote features | Which controls, status displays, alerts, camera views or voice functions require a connection every time? |
| Network requirements | Does setup require 2.4 GHz, a particular pairing flow or a router that meets stated compatibility conditions? |
| App and account dependency | Which features require the manufacturer’s app, an account or a compatible voice assistant? |
| Model and generation limits | Are advertised functions limited to a named family, software version or production generation? |
Write the answers beside the model number in your buying notes. If a specification says only “Wi-Fi enabled,” ask support which features remain usable offline and whether a persistent internet connection is required.
When a connected appliance is a good fit
Choose connected features when you value remote awareness
Connectivity is useful when you want to check progress from another room, receive completion alerts, control a supported function from a phone or use a compatible voice assistant. Those benefits disappear temporarily during an outage, so the appliance should still meet your needs using local controls.
Prefer simpler operation when offline independence is critical
If you need every important function to work without an account, app or internet service, prioritize a model whose manual clearly lists local controls and offline behavior. Do not pay for a connected feature that you cannot use reliably under your network conditions.

Ask precise questions before purchase
- Will the ordinary cycle or cooking mode start without internet?
- Which advertised features need Wi-Fi only for setup, and which need continuous connectivity?
- Is 2.4 GHz required, and is the setup method compatible with my router?
- Do remote controls require an on-appliance remote-enable setting?
- What happens to notifications, voice commands and app content during an outage?
The practical answer
Smart appliances usually do not need an internet connection for their basic local job. They do need connectivity for the features that make them “smart” from a distance: phone control, monitoring, alerts, voice integration, online content and certain model-specific modes. Because manufacturers implement these functions differently, the exact model manual matters more than the product category. Check offline basics, persistent-connection requirements, app and account dependencies, and network specifications before buying or troubleshooting.
