Not always. A smart alarm clock may need internet for first-time setup, software updates, cloud voice assistants, streaming audio or new content, while still sounding a previously scheduled alarm without an internet connection. The answer depends on the exact model, its firmware and whether the alarm, sound and schedule are stored locally. An internet outage is also different from a power outage: only a clock with documented battery backup can be expected to keep running when household electricity fails.
What “needs Wi-Fi” actually means
Manufacturers often use Wi-Fi, network and internet interchangeably, but they describe different dependencies. Wi-Fi is the local wireless link between the clock and your router. Internet access is the router’s connection to online services. A clock can remain connected to your home Wi-Fi while cloud services are unreachable because the broadband connection is down. Conversely, a failed router or wireless signal can disconnect the clock even when the wider internet is working.

For reliability, separate five questions for the specific model:
- Does initial setup require an internet connection?
- Is a scheduled alarm saved in the clock itself or retrieved from an online service?
- Are the alarm tones stored locally, or are they streamed?
- Which features use cloud services, such as voice assistants, weather, music and routines?
- Does the clock have a documented battery backup for a household power cut?
A manufacturer saying that a product works offline does not automatically prove that every alarm, sound or smart feature will work offline. Look for an explicit statement about alarm behavior or test the exact configuration before relying on it.

Which functions usually stop when the internet is down?
Initial setup and account linking
Many smart clocks cannot be configured from the clock alone. Their companion app may need to connect the device to Wi-Fi, register an account and download the first software package. If the internet fails before this process is complete, you may be unable to set the clock, add alarms or activate an offline mode.
Cloud voice assistants
Commands handled by a cloud assistant normally need a live internet connection. Asking for a song, changing an alarm by voice, requesting weather or triggering a remote smart-home routine can fail even if the display and a locally stored alarm continue operating. Lenovo says internet is required to interact with Google Assistant on its Smart Clock 2. Lenovo likewise says its Smart Clock Essential with Alexa Built-in requires internet for Alexa interaction.
Streaming audio and online content
A scheduled alarm that plays an onboard tone has a different dependency from one that starts a streaming playlist. New alarm scenes, internet radio, podcasts, cloud music and downloaded content that has not been cached may be unavailable during an outage. If waking up is the priority, choose and verify a locally stored tone rather than assuming a streaming source will be available.

Firmware updates and new content are online operations. Nintendo’s documentation for Sound Clock: Alarmo lists system updates and new alarm scenes as functions that require internet, even though most everyday functions do not. A clock that is offline for a long period may continue to run but miss security fixes, bug fixes or newly added sounds until it reconnects.

Can a scheduled alarm sound during an internet outage?
Often, yes, but only when the alarm schedule and sound are already stored locally and the clock still has power. Some products document this clearly; others only make a broad statement about offline operation. Do not infer alarm reliability from a generic claim that the display works without Wi-Fi.
Loftie Clock
Loftie says internet is needed for setup, software updates and new content. After setup, the user can enable Offline Mode through Settings, then Offline Mode; the company says the clock then works fully without Wi-Fi. The companion app is required for setup, while core controls such as alarms and sounds are available from the clock buttons afterward. Loftie also states that its backup battery lasts about five hours and that the alarm still goes off during a power cut. The five-hour figure is a manufacturer claim for this model, not an independently verified test or a general smart-clock standard.
Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo
Nintendo says an internet connection is not needed for most Alarmo functions. Its examples of online-only operations include checking for system updates and obtaining new alarm scenes. Nintendo specifies a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network using WPA, WPA2 or WPA3 security for connection. Networks that require an internet login page are not supported. This connectivity guidance does not establish a battery runtime or confirm what happens to a scheduled alarm during a power failure.

Lenovo describes a stable network connection as very important for normal operation as designed and says internet is needed for Google Assistant interaction. The reviewed Lenovo information does not establish that the alarm will sound during a prolonged internet outage or explain any power-cut backup. Treat its offline alarm behavior as unconfirmed unless the current manual for your firmware says otherwise.

Lenovo Smart Clock Essential with Alexa Built-in
Lenovo says setup is performed through the Alexa app and that internet is required to interact with Alexa. That confirms a cloud dependency for setup and voice control, but the available support information does not settle whether a locally scheduled alarm continues through an internet outage or how long the device would operate without household power.
Sandman Doppler
Sandman says many Doppler features require Wi-Fi. An app is required for initial configuration, but the company says the app is not needed afterward for basic clock use. Sandman also says an internal rechargeable battery backup keeps the alarm sounding during a household power outage. The statement concerns the Doppler specifically and does not mean every Wi-Fi feature remains available while offline.
Xiaomi Mi Smart Clock
Xiaomi’s troubleshooting guidance focuses on reconnecting the clock to Wi-Fi. It asks users to check whether other devices have internet access and whether the router’s WAN connection is plugged in. That is useful for distinguishing a local wireless problem from a failed external connection, but the documented FAQ does not explicitly say whether a scheduled Mi Smart Clock alarm sounds through a prolonged internet outage. Check the current model manual before treating it as outage-proof.

Internet outage versus Wi-Fi failure versus power outage
Internet-only outage
Your router and the clock remain powered, but the broadband or cloud service is unavailable. A locally stored alarm may still sound. Voice commands, streaming, weather, remote control, updates and newly downloaded scenes are the features most likely to fail.

Router or Wi-Fi failure
The clock cannot reach the local network. This can prevent cloud features and may also prevent devices that require a network handshake from operating normally. If the model has a documented Offline Mode, enable it before an outage rather than expecting to activate it afterward.
Household power outage
A dead router is not the only concern: the clock itself may stop. Battery backup is a separate specification from internet resilience. Loftie states approximately five hours of backup operation, and Sandman states that the Doppler’s internal rechargeable battery keeps its alarm sounding. For the other models in the comparison, the reviewed support information does not establish backup runtime or power-cut behavior.
How to verify your clock before relying on it
- Finish setup while online. Install the required app, connect the clock, sign in if required, set the time zone and install pending firmware.
- Set a test alarm. Use a time only a few minutes ahead. Select an onboard alarm tone, not a streaming track or cloud routine.
- Disconnect the internet without removing power. Unplug the router’s WAN cable or disable the broadband connection while leaving the router and clock powered. Do not factory-reset the clock.
- Observe the test. Confirm that the display keeps time, the alarm sounds and the alarm can be stopped from the clock. Separately test whether voice control, streaming and weather fail as expected.
- Test a Wi-Fi interruption. If the clock has an Offline Mode, enable it according to the model’s instructions and repeat the alarm test with Wi-Fi disabled.
- Check power backup. If outage protection matters, disconnect the clock from mains power and verify that the alarm remains scheduled. Record how long the battery lasts, because a manufacturer’s runtime is model-specific and may vary with volume, display brightness and battery age.
- Document the result. Write down the firmware version, alarm tone and settings that worked. A future update or factory reset can change the configuration.
Buying checklist for outage reliability
Read the exact support page or manual for the model and firmware you plan to use. Look for these statements rather than relying on the product’s general “smart” or “offline” label:
- Setup: Can the clock be configured without an internet account, or must setup be completed online?
- Local alarm storage: Does the manufacturer explicitly say scheduled alarms are stored and triggered on the device?
- Local sounds: Are default tones built in? If you choose music, is it downloaded or streamed?
- Offline mode: Is there a named setting, such as Loftie’s Offline Mode, and what does it disable?
- Cloud features: Which voice assistant, weather, music, routines and remote controls stop when internet access disappears?
- Network compatibility: Does the clock require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, particular WPA security or a network without a captive-portal login? Alarmo, for example, specifies 2.4 GHz and WPA, WPA2 or WPA3.
- Power protection: Is there an internal battery, what runtime does the manufacturer state, and does the documentation explicitly say the alarm continues during a power cut?
If the only mission is waking you at a fixed time, a simple clock with a locally stored tone and a documented battery backup has fewer dependencies than a cloud routine that streams audio. A smart model can still be appropriate, but verify the offline path before making it your sole alarm.

Troubleshooting when the clock will not connect
The clock says Wi-Fi is connected but online features fail
Check another device on the same network. If local Wi-Fi works but other devices have no internet, the problem is likely the broadband connection or router WAN link. Xiaomi’s support guidance specifically recommends checking other devices’ internet access and confirming that the router WAN port is connected.
The clock cannot join the network
Confirm the required band and security mode. Alarmo’s documented requirements are 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and WPA, WPA2 or WPA3. A network that opens a browser login page is not supported for that device. Move the clock closer to the router during setup, then retest from its normal location.
The alarm worked once but not after a reset
A factory reset can erase locally stored schedules and disable an offline setting. Reconnect while online, recreate the alarm, select a local tone and repeat the outage test. Do not assume that a previous offline result survives a reset or major firmware change.

The alarm sounds but the chosen music does not
The alarm schedule may be local while the audio source is online. Replace the stream with a built-in tone or content that the manufacturer confirms is stored on the clock. Test at the same volume and time settings you will use overnight.
Bottom line
Smart alarm clocks do not share one Wi-Fi requirement. A clock may need internet for setup, updates, voice assistants and online content yet still sound a locally stored alarm during an internet outage. That outcome is dependable only when the manufacturer documents it or your own pre-outage test confirms it. Treat battery backup as a separate requirement: internet resilience cannot keep a clock running when household power is gone.
