Sometimes, but not because they are screen-free. A displayless design and a subscription are separate decisions. WHOOP currently bundles its band, app access and ongoing insights into membership plans. Amazfit says its Helio Strap requires no subscription, while Polar describes Polar Loop as both screen-free and subscription-free. Prices, plan rules and availability can vary by country and can change, so check the exact model and checkout terms before buying.
Screen-free does not mean subscription-based
A screen-free health band has no on-device display for showing steps, heart rate or notifications. You normally wear it continuously, then view measurements and trends in a phone app. That design can make a band lighter, less distracting and easier to wear during sleep, but it does not determine how the manufacturer charges for software.

There are three common arrangements:
- Membership required: the hardware and app service are sold together through a recurring plan. WHOOP is the example covered here.
- No required subscription: you buy the hardware and can use the manufacturer’s stated features without a recurring membership. Amazfit describes Helio Strap this way.
- Subscription-free ecosystem: the manufacturer says the band and its companion service do not require a subscription. Polar uses this description for Polar Loop.
The practical question is therefore not “Is it screen-free?” but “What remains available on this model, in my country, if I do not keep paying?”

How WHOOP’s membership model works
WHOOP is the clearest example of a screen-free band that is tied to a paid service. Its membership page states: “Each WHOOP membership includes a device, a charger, and a unique set of features — choose the one that best fits your health and fitness goals.” In other words, the purchase is not simply a one-time hardware transaction. The membership supplies the wearable and access to the software experience associated with the selected tier.
Different tiers, different feature sets
The official comparison lists One, Peak and Life tiers. They do not represent identical packages; each tier has its own feature set. A buyer should compare the functions shown for the exact tier rather than assume that every WHOOP feature is included in every plan.
Annual pricing is market-specific
WHOOP’s US support page lists annual rates and explains that monthly memberships are no longer a standard option for new sign-ups, although some existing renewals can follow different rules. The membership comparison page is presented in a Denmark locale and displays prices and terms in that market’s currency and context. Those pages cannot be combined into one universal price. Use the checkout page for your account’s country, and confirm whether the amount is a first-term offer, a recurring renewal price or a different regional plan.

Because WHOOP ties app access and ongoing insights to membership, do not assume that buying the band once guarantees permanent access to the full software experience. Read the current cancellation and renewal terms for your account before committing to a longer period. The official documentation establishes the membership relationship, but it does not establish that every analysis remains available after a plan ends.
Amazfit Helio Strap: no required subscription
Amazfit’s US product page says Helio Strap does not require a subscription. That makes it a conventional hardware purchase for readers who want a screen-free band without a mandatory monthly or annual membership.

- It supports continuous heart-rate tracking.
- You can wear it on the wrist or upper arm.
- The US page listed the device at $99.99.
The $99.99 figure is a vendor listing for the US market, not a guaranteed worldwide or permanent price. Check the live product page for your country, shipping costs, taxes, stock status and any current package conditions.
What “no subscription required” does and does not promise
The statement means a recurring subscription is not required according to Amazfit’s product information. It does not prove that Helio Strap offers exactly the same analyses, coaching or historical views as a membership-based service. The two products use different software ecosystems and feature packages, so compare the functions you actually need instead of treating the absence of a fee as an equivalence claim.
Polar Loop: screen-free and subscription-free
Polar’s Loop manual calls the device screen-free and subscription-free. The manual says sleep, heart-rate, activity and recovery information are available through Polar Flow, Polar’s companion platform.
Phone-based setup and syncing
A screen-free Loop cannot show measurements on your wrist. You set it up and synchronize it through Polar Flow, so a compatible phone and the app are part of normal use. Polar’s setup guide explains the starting process. Read the guide before purchase if you need a band that can be configured without a phone or that exposes data directly on the device.
Subscription-free is not the same as device-independent
Polar’s subscription-free description answers the recurring-fee question, not every ownership question. You still depend on Polar Flow for the documented sleep, heart-rate, movement and recovery views. Check supported phones, account requirements, synchronization behavior and export options in the current documentation for your region.

Calculate the cost you will actually pay
Compare the same ownership period for every candidate. A useful worksheet is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Record the upfront price. Use the price shown for your country, including mandatory delivery charges and taxes where the seller displays them.
- Add recurring membership charges. For a membership product, multiply the current recurring rate by the number of renewal periods you expect to keep it. Do not substitute a different country’s price.
- Separate introductory and renewal pricing. If checkout shows a first-term promotion, record the normal renewal amount beside it; the lower initial figure is not the long-term cost.
- List required accessories or replacements. WHOOP’s membership statement includes a device and charger, while other products may package hardware differently. Confirm what is in the box for the exact offer.
- Value the features you would lose. A cheaper, subscription-free band may not provide the same analyses as a paid tier. Compare the specific sleep, heart-rate, activity and recovery views you plan to use.
This approach prevents a one-time hardware price from being compared with a membership price that includes hardware and continuing app access.

Data access after a plan ends
Ask whether historical records, dashboards and trend analysis remain viewable after cancellation. WHOOP’s documentation establishes that ongoing insights are part of membership; it does not establish permanent access to every feature without an active plan. For subscription-free products, verify the manufacturer’s account and app terms rather than assuming that “no subscription” means unrestricted offline access.
Phone and account dependence
Both Amazfit and Polar describe app-mediated use, and Polar specifically requires Polar Flow for setup and syncing. Confirm that your phone’s operating system is supported and that you are comfortable creating the required account. A screen-free band is not necessarily usable without a phone nearby for setup, synchronization or detailed review.
Wear location and comfort
Helio Strap is documented for wrist or upper-arm wear. That flexibility can matter if a wrist band interferes with work, sports equipment or sleep. For any model, check sizing, charging routine and whether the chosen position is practical for continuous wear. The cited product information does not establish comparative comfort or sensor accuracy, so treat those as personal-fit questions rather than proven advantages.

Feature and health claims
The cited pages describe product functions and plans; they are not independent accuracy studies or clinical evaluations. Do not choose a band on the assumption that a subscription makes measurements medically more accurate. If you need health information for a diagnosis or treatment decision, discuss appropriate devices and interpretation with a qualified clinician.
Which type fits your buying priority?
Choose a membership model when ongoing software is the priority
A membership can make sense if you specifically want the analyses and service tier offered by WHOOP and accept a continuing payment. Compare One, Peak and Life on the official page, then verify the local annual price and renewal rules at checkout.
Choose a subscription-free model when predictable ownership cost matters
Amazfit Helio Strap is the documented option with no required subscription and a US listing of $99.99. Polar Loop is described as subscription-free and presents its data through Polar Flow. These choices remove a mandatory recurring membership, but they do not promise identical software depth or feature coverage.
Choose by wear position when placement determines whether you will use it
If upper-arm wear is important, Helio Strap’s stated wrist-or-upper-arm design is a concrete point of comparison. If you prefer a particular ecosystem, review the app workflow and setup instructions before considering price alone.
Common buying mistakes
- Equating “screen-free” with “free of subscriptions.” Screen presence and payment structure are independent.
- Using a foreign price as your budget. WHOOP’s Denmark-locale page and US support page show why currency and terms must be checked locally.
- Comparing hardware prices with bundled membership prices. WHOOP’s plan includes the device and charger, so compare total ownership cost over the same period.
- Assuming subscription-free means no app. Polar Loop still requires Polar Flow for setup and syncing.
- Assuming feature parity. The available documentation establishes different plans and feature sets, not equivalence between products.
- Buying before checking availability. Product support, prices and regional checkout terms can change; confirm them immediately before ordering.
A final pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the exact model and your purchase country.
- Open the manufacturer’s current product and membership pages.
- Write down the upfront cost, recurring cost and renewal price for your intended ownership period.
- Confirm which app supplies the data and whether phone-based setup and syncing are mandatory.
- Check the specific sleep, heart-rate, activity and recovery features you need.
- Verify wear location, sizing, charging contents and return terms.
- Read what happens to stored history and insights if a membership is cancelled.
Bottom line
Some screen-free health bands require a subscription and some do not. WHOOP uses membership plans that bundle the wearable with app access and tiered features. Amazfit says Helio Strap needs no subscription, and Polar describes Loop as subscription-free while using Polar Flow for setup and data. Decide from the exact model’s current regional terms, the features you need and the total cost over the time you expect to wear it—not from the absence of a screen.
