No. PS5 graphics improvements are not automatic for every game. Most PS4 games can run on PS5, but backward compatibility is different from a developer patch, a native PS5 version, Sony’s Game Boost feature, or a display setting. Whether a particular game looks or runs better depends on that game and the mechanism involved.
What can make a game look or run better on PS5?
There are several distinct possibilities, and they do not apply to every title in the same way:
- Backward compatibility: A PS4 game runs on PS5, but that fact alone does not mean its graphics have been upgraded.
- Game Boost: Sony says select PS4 games may benefit from improved or more stable frame rates. Games with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution may also show higher fidelity, but outcomes vary by title. Game Boost operates automatically; there is no setting to switch it on for a PS4 game. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance describes the feature and its limits.
- A developer update: A patch may change resolution, frame rate, graphics modes, or visual effects, but not every game update changes graphics. Check the publisher’s notes for the specific version.
- A PS5 version or upgrade: A native PS5 edition is distinct from running the PS4 edition through backward compatibility. Check which version is installed before comparing visuals.
- Console or display settings: Output options can affect how a supported game is presented, but they do not prove that the game itself received a graphics upgrade.
Can you play PS4 games on PS5?
Sony says the overwhelming majority of the PS4 catalog—more than 4,000 games—are playable on PS5. Some titles are PS4-only, and Sony warns that compatible games may still have errors, unexpected behavior, or missing PS4 functionality. Consult Sony’s current compatibility information or the PlayStation Store listing for the particular game.
How to check whether a game update changed graphics
- On the PS5 Games home screen, highlight the game.
- Press the Options button and choose Check for Update. Sony also says a game or app automatically updates to the newest available version when started. See Sony’s update instructions.
- Confirm whether you are running the PS4 or PS5 version of the game.
- Read the publisher’s notes for the installed version. Look for specific statements about resolution, frame rate, graphics modes, or visual effects; an update being available does not establish that it changes graphics.
What PS5 Pro’s PS4 image-quality setting does—and requires
On PS5 Pro consoles in the CFI-7000 model group, Sony offers an option to improve image quality for PS4 games. It requires a display that supports 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. Sony advises turning the option off if unexpected gameplay behavior occurs. This console setting is not a guarantee that every PS4 game will gain the same visual improvement. Why your TV’s resolution, VRR, or 120 Hz output is not proof of an upgrade
Resolution, variable refresh rate (VRR), and 120 Hz output depend on support from both the TV and the game. Sony notes that VRR results vary by TV. A display accepting a particular output mode does not, by itself, mean a game received a patch or new graphics features. Check the game’s own supported modes and the TV’s capabilities; Sony’s video-output guidance explains supported output settings.
