Usually, no—at least not in the way people mean when they ask about “PS2 games on PS5.” A PS5 cannot read original PS2 discs. PS2-origin games that appear on PS5 are separate digital releases or streamed Classics Catalog versions. Trophies, quick save (Sony’s term for a save-state-style feature), and rewind are added or omitted on a game-by-game basis. Sony explicitly lists quick save and rewind for Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4, but that does not make either feature universal. Trophy support also needs to be checked for the exact release.

The direct answer

There are four separate questions hidden in “Do PS2 games on PS5 support trophies, save states, and rewind?”

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Can a PS5 play a PS2 disc? No. Sony’s PS5 FAQ says the console supports PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, but not original PlayStation, PS2, or PS3 discs.
  • Can a PS2-origin game run on PS5? Yes, when Sony or a publisher has released that particular game digitally for PS4/PS5, or when it is available as a streamed title in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog in a supported market.
  • Does it have trophies? Sometimes. Trophy support is attached to the individual release, not guaranteed by the fact that the original game came from PS2.
  • Can you save anywhere or rewind? Sometimes. Sony documents quick save and rewind for specific PS2-origin releases, including Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4. Other games may not include either feature.

The practical rule is simple: identify the exact PS4/PS5 or streamed version, then check that listing’s features before buying, downloading, or starting a long playthrough.

What “PS2 games on PS5” actually means

Original PS2 discs

Putting a PS2 disc into a PS5 will not launch the game. The PS5’s backward-compatibility support is centered on PS5 software and most PS4 software; it does not provide disc compatibility for the original PlayStation, PS2, or PS3 generations. A PS5 therefore cannot use your existing PS2 disc as proof that a digital version is available, nor can it add trophies or rewind to that disc.

Downloadable PS2-origin releases

Some games originally released on PS2 have been sold as separate digital releases for PS4 and PS5. These may be ports, remasters, or remakes rather than an emulated copy of your disc. The release’s Store page determines which consoles it supports and which extras were implemented. A digital listing that carries the PS4 and PS5 labels is a different product from the PS2 disc.

Streamed Classics Catalog games

Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide says original PS2 games can be streamed through the Premium tier in select markets. Streaming availability varies by title and region, and the required membership plan must be active. The current Classics Catalog interface on PS5 is the place to check whether a game is eligible in your account’s country. Catalog membership and availability can change, so an older list or a video showing a game does not guarantee that it is still offered.

Access route What you are using Where saves are stored What determines access
Original PS2 disc The physical PS2 release Cannot be used to play on PS5 PS5 does not support PS2 disc playback
Downloaded PS4/PS5 release A specific digital port, remaster, or remake PS5 or PS4 console storage The game’s Store listing, platform support, and purchase or entitlement
Streamed Classics Catalog version A title delivered from PlayStation’s streaming service PlayStation streaming storage Title, region, service tier, and current catalog availability

Trophies: check the individual release

There is no safe “all PS2 classics have trophies” rule. Sony’s published PlayStation Plus guidance says some original PlayStation and PSP titles may offer trophies and that the feature is optional for developers. The examples named by Sony include Ape Escape, Hot Shots Golf, IQ Intelligent Qube, and Syphon Filter. That statement is specifically about original PlayStation and PSP titles; it does not establish a blanket policy for PS2 games.

For a PS2-origin game, treat trophies as a release-specific feature. A publisher may create a new trophy set for a port, use a different set for a remaster, or release a version with no trophies. A streamed catalog entry can also differ from a separately sold download. The original PS2 edition’s lack of trophies is not evidence that the PS4/PS5 version lacks them, and the presence of trophies in one regional listing is not proof that every edition has the same set.

How to verify trophies before you play

  1. Find the exact game entry in the PlayStation Store or the Classics Catalog on your PS5. Check the platform labels and whether the entry is a download or a stream.
  2. Open the game’s details and look for a trophy list or trophy information associated with that release. Do not rely on a listing for a remake, sequel, or a different region.
  3. Check an official title announcement if the Store page is unclear. Sony’s general statement about optional trophies is not a substitute for confirmation of a named PS2 game.
  4. If you are choosing between a downloaded and streamed version, verify each entry separately. They can have different save handling and may not share the same release metadata.

Because catalog contents and Store pages change, verify the listing shortly before purchase or download rather than treating a launch article as a permanent feature list.

Quick save and “save states”

Readers often use “save state” to mean an emulator snapshot that captures the game at any moment. Sony generally uses the label quick save for the classic-game interface it documents. The two ideas are related, but you should not assume that every title offers multiple independently named slots, unlimited snapshots, or the same controls as a PC emulator.

Sony specifically identifies Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4 as PS2-origin games enhanced with quick save. In those releases, the feature is part of the supplied classic-game experience rather than a capability that the PS5 automatically adds to every PS2 game. If a different title’s Store description does not mention quick save, look for its own instructions before expecting to suspend the game at any point.

What quick save does not mean

  • It does not make an original PS2 disc playable on PS5.
  • It does not prove that every checkpoint, menu, or cutscene can be captured safely.
  • It does not guarantee that a quick save from a streamed version can be opened by a downloaded version.
  • It does not necessarily provide a permanent archive equivalent to a normal in-game memory-card save.

Use the title’s on-screen menu and instructions for the exact behavior. If a game offers both normal saves and quick save, keep a conventional in-game save as well; that gives you a more portable recovery point if you change access methods.

Rewind is also title-specific

Rewind lets you move gameplay back and retry a recent section without loading an older conventional save. Sony lists rewind for Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4, alongside quick save. Those examples confirm that rewind exists in selected PS2-origin releases, not that the PS5 emulates every PS2 game with a universal rewind command.

Do not infer rewind from the mere presence of a Classics Catalog badge, a PS4/PS5 label, or a quick-save option. A game can include one feature without the other, and a remaster can implement both differently from a streamed classic. Check the individual release description or its in-game classic menu.

How saves work when you download or stream

The storage location changes with the access route. Sony says a downloaded game stores its saves on PS5 or PS4 console storage. A streamed game stores its saves in PlayStation’s streaming storage. This distinction matters if you switch from streaming to downloading, change consoles, or cancel and later restore a membership.

Downloaded version

When you install a PS2-origin release on the console, its save data follows the normal local-save model for that PS4/PS5 game. The game may also provide its own quick-save data, but that remains tied to the release that created it. A local save from a downloaded version should not be assumed to appear automatically in a streamed copy.

Streamed version

Streaming does not write the same local game data as an installed copy. Sony identifies streaming storage as the location for streamed-game saves. Your progress therefore depends on the streaming service and the account using it, as well as the title remaining available to stream in your region.

Moving progress between streamed and downloaded versions

Sony says save data does not automatically transfer between streamed and downloaded versions. PlayStation Plus cloud storage can be used to move the data, but the process requires deliberate steps:

  1. Finish the session using the version that currently contains your progress.
  2. Use the PlayStation Plus cloud-save controls to upload or copy the relevant save data, following the options shown for that version.
  3. Launch the other version and download or copy the save from cloud storage to the console when prompted by the system’s save-data management screen.
  4. Confirm that the game recognizes the imported data before deleting anything. Keep the original save until the new version loads correctly.

Cloud transfer is a bridge between storage systems; it is not an automatic conversion of every quick-save snapshot. If the two releases use different save formats, the title may accept only standard in-game saves or may not recognize the data at all.

A reliable way to check one game

Use this checklist for any PS2 title you are considering:

  1. Identify the edition. Record whether the listing is a downloadable PS4/PS5 release, a streamed Classics Catalog entry, a remaster, or a remake.
  2. Confirm your region. Open the Store or PlayStation Plus catalog while signed in to the account that will play it. Availability and streaming rights differ by country.
  3. Check the membership requirement. Streaming PS2 games requires the applicable PlayStation Plus Premium access in supported markets; a purchased download follows its own Store entitlement.
  4. Look for trophies. Verify a trophy list attached to that exact release rather than relying on the PS2 original or a similarly named edition.
  5. Look for quick save and rewind. Treat these as separate entries. The documented examples are Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4; do not generalize their feature set.
  6. Plan your saves. If you may change between streaming and downloading, create a normal in-game save and understand the cloud-storage route before switching.
  7. Check again before starting. Catalog membership, regional availability, and Store metadata can change after launch.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a PS5 for a PS2 disc collection. The console will not read those discs; you need an available digital or streamed release for each game.
  • Assuming “classic” means “trophy-supported.” Trophy implementation is optional and title-specific.
  • Calling every quick save a full emulator save state. Sony’s documented feature is quick save, and its exact slots and persistence depend on the title.
  • Expecting rewind in every catalog game. Sony names rewind for selected releases, not the PS2 library as a whole.
  • Assuming streaming and downloading share saves automatically. They use different storage systems; cloud transfer may be required.
  • Trusting an old availability list. Catalog entries and regional access can change, so check the live Store or Classics Catalog listing.

Examples that illustrate the rule

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings

Sony identifies this PS2-origin release as having both quick save and rewind. Those documented features make it a clear example of an enhanced classic, but they do not answer whether every edition has trophies; check the specific listing for that information.

Wild Arms 4

Sony likewise lists quick save and rewind for this PS2-origin game. Its feature set demonstrates that rewind is available in selected releases, not that it is a standard PS5 function applied to all PS2 software.

Bottom line for buyers and returning players

A PS5 is not a PS2-disc player. To play a PS2-origin game, you need the exact digital PS4/PS5 release or a currently available streamed catalog version in your region. Trophies, quick save, and rewind are optional, title-level features. Sony’s documented examples of quick save and rewind are Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Wild Arms 4; for every other game, verify the live listing and release notes. Finally, remember that downloads save locally while streams use PlayStation streaming storage, so moving between them can require PlayStation Plus cloud storage.
