Yes. PlayStation Plus Extra games can leave the Game Catalog on a published end date. Downloading one does not turn it into a permanent purchase: you can play it only while your account has an eligible, active membership and Sony still offers that title in the catalog. When the game is removed, the installed copy and catalog-linked add-ons stop working unless you buy the game or regain an eligible entitlement.
What happens when a PS Plus Extra game leaves?
A Game Catalog title is a subscription license, not a retail license. While the game is included in the catalog and your account has an active PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium membership, you can download and play the eligible version. If Sony reaches the title’s announced end date, the catalog entitlement ends. The game may remain installed on your PS5 or PS4, but the console can no longer validate your right to launch it through PlayStation Plus.

In practical terms, removal can produce a lock icon or an access message instead of starting the game. Deleting and reinstalling the same catalog copy will not restore access; the issue is the entitlement, not the files on your drive. You regain access by purchasing the game separately or by resubscribing to an eligible plan if Sony still grants access through that plan. A purchase is a separate ownership license and is not created automatically by a previous download.
Why downloading does not mean you keep the game forever
Extra’s Download button authorizes a download for an eligible subscriber. It does not transfer ownership. The downloaded files are useful only while two conditions remain true:

- Your account has an active plan that includes the relevant catalog, normally Extra or Premium for Game Catalog downloads.
- The specific game remains available in that catalog.
The title can therefore become unplayable for either of two different reasons. If your membership expires, catalog games lose their subscription entitlement. If the membership remains active but Sony removes that game, the title also loses its catalog entitlement. Renewing the subscription fixes the first condition, but it cannot make a removed game available unless Sony has restored it or you own it separately.
The game can still appear under Game Library because it was downloaded to your account. That library entry is a record of the download, not proof that you own a permanent copy or that the catalog license is still valid.
How to download a Game Catalog title correctly
Extra is the downloadable Game Catalog tier. Sony’s support flow is straightforward on both current console generations:

- On PS5, open the PlayStation Plus hub and choose the Game Catalog. On PS4, open PlayStation Plus and select the Game Catalog from the service area.
- Find the game and check that it is included for your current plan and region.
- Open the game page and choose Download.
- After installation, launch it while the membership and catalog listing remain valid.
Once downloaded, the game also appears in Game Library. That shortcut saves you from downloading it again, but it does not change the license conditions. If the catalog listing later shows an end date, treat that date as the last scheduled day of subscription access, not as a deadline to finish downloading.

How Sony announces removals
Sony states that some Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games have end dates and that those dates are publicized ahead of removal. The company does not state a universal minimum notice period in the cited membership information, so there is no reliable rule such as “every game gets 30 days’ warning.” Check the Game Catalog listing and Sony’s current PlayStation Plus announcements for the title’s region and platform.
An announced end date applies to the service entitlement, not necessarily to the game’s availability for purchase. A title can leave the subscription catalog and remain purchasable from the PlayStation Store. Conversely, a game that is still sold may not be included in Extra. Catalog inclusion and retail availability are separate decisions.
What happens to DLC and add-ons?
DLC purchased for a downloaded catalog game follows the underlying catalog entitlement. While the base game is valid through PlayStation Plus, its catalog-related expansions and add-ons can work normally. If your membership expires or Sony removes the base game, access to that DLC is also lost, even though you paid for the add-on.

If you buy a different edition, confirm that it is compatible with the DLC’s platform and region; ownership of an add-on does not by itself provide the base game.

Essential is not a lower-cost way to keep an Extra download. If an account drops from Extra to Essential, Game Catalog titles lose their entitlement even if the files remain on the console. Premium includes Extra’s Game Catalog access, so moving from Extra to Premium does not interrupt that catalog right by itself; the individual game’s availability rules still apply.
Does PS Plus Extra include streaming?
No. Extra is the download-focused catalog tier. Cloud streaming is a Premium benefit for eligible titles and supported regions. Sony lists a 5 Mbps minimum broadband connection for streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. Those figures are service requirements, not a promise that every Game Catalog game can be streamed or that a connection will deliver identical quality.
Streaming does not bypass removal rules. A game must still be an eligible Premium streaming title and remain offered by Sony. If it leaves the applicable catalog, neither a downloaded copy nor a stream remains available through the subscription. Streaming availability can also differ from download availability, so check the individual game page rather than assuming that every Extra title has a Premium stream.

Buying the game is the direct way to avoid a catalog-removal deadline. Before paying, check whether you already own the title, whether a discount is tied to your current membership, and whether your DLC belongs to the same edition and region. A subscription download is not converted into a purchase by paying for an expansion or by keeping the game installed.

How to check whether a game has an end date
- Open the game’s page from the Game Catalog on your console or in the current PlayStation Plus catalog view.
- Look for an “End date” or removal notice on the listing. The date applies to the catalog offering in your account’s region and plan.
- Check the edition and platform shown on the page. A PS4 listing, PS5 listing and streaming listing can have different availability.
- If you own DLC, note the base game’s end date and decide whether to finish the game, buy it, or accept that the add-ons will pause with the catalog entitlement.
Do not infer an end date from a download date. Installing a game today does not reserve it for a fixed number of days, and installing it before an announcement does not grandfather the copy into permanent access.
Common situations and the correct fix
The game is installed but shows a lock
First verify that the signed-in account has an active Extra or Premium plan. If the plan is active, check whether the game has passed its catalog end date. Renewing fixes an expired plan; it does not fix a title that has been removed. If the game is still listed and your plan is valid, use the console’s license-restoration option and restart the console. A restoration can refresh account data, but it cannot override Sony’s catalog schedule.
The subscription expired, then you renewed
Access should return to titles that are still in the catalog and included in the renewed plan. Re-download only if necessary. If one title remains locked after renewal, confirm that it has not left the catalog and that you renewed on the account that originally downloaded it.
The base game left but you bought its DLC
The add-on alone does not supply the base-game entitlement. Purchase the base game or regain an eligible subscription entitlement while Sony offers the game. Once the base license is valid again, the purchased DLC can be usable again, assuming the edition, platform and region match.
The game was removed but is still sold
You can buy it from the PlayStation Store if Sony continues to sell it in your region. The purchase creates a separate entitlement; it is not a continuation of the expired catalog license. Your existing installation may become playable after the purchase, or the console may require a license refresh or re-download.
You changed from Extra to Essential
Essential does not include the Game Catalog. The files can remain installed, but launching them through the former Extra entitlement is no longer authorized. Return to Extra or Premium, provided the games are still included, or buy the titles individually.
Planning around a removal date
- Prioritize games with an announced end date rather than assuming the catalog is permanent.
- Keep enough console storage available for updates and save data, but remember that storage does not preserve a license.
- Use ordinary in-game save synchronization and backups where supported. Saves can remain on your account even when the game becomes unavailable, but a save does not grant permission to launch the title.
- For a long game or a title with paid expansions, compare the cost of buying the base game with the value of finishing it during the remaining catalog period.
- Do not purchase DLC solely to extend access. DLC does not prevent the base game from leaving.
What Sony’s rules mean in one sentence
PS Plus Extra gives you time-limited access to an eligible Game Catalog license: download convenience is real, but ownership is not. The license ends when your eligible membership ends or when Sony removes the title, and any catalog-dependent DLC follows the same access boundary.
