Yes—most plants grown with supplemental light need a predictable dark period every 24 hours. Leaving a grow light on continuously is not a sound default. For many indoor plants, begin with 12–14 total hours of light, then provide roughly 10–12 hours of uninterrupted darkness. Count strong window light and artificial light together, and keep total illumination at or below about 16 hours for most plants unless a crop-specific guide gives a different schedule.
Do plants need darkness at night?
Most do. Darkness is not wasted time in a plant’s daily cycle; the length of the night is part of the signal that controls normal development. Iowa State University Extension describes this response as photoperiod: plants respond physiologically to the length of the dark period, not simply to how long a lamp is switched on.

A reliable starting schedule for a typical foliage houseplant is 12–14 hours of combined daylight and grow-light exposure, followed by an uninterrupted dark interval. University of Maryland Extension advises no more than 16 total hours of illumination for most plants. That ceiling is a broad home-growing guideline, not a universal rule for every crop or growth stage.

What happens during the dark period?
Plants use the night length as information. Iowa State’s guidance notes that “short-day plants” are more accurately called long-night plants: they flower only after receiving a sufficiently long, uninterrupted dark period. The terminology matters because interrupting the night with light can change the signal even when the plant still receives the same total number of illuminated hours.
University of Maryland lists poinsettia, kalanchoe and Christmas cactus as photoperiod-sensitive examples. For these plants, an apparently minor source of light—such as a nearby lamp, a room light or a streetlight through a window—can interfere with flowering when it reaches the foliage during the required night.
For nonflowering foliage plants, an occasional brief exposure is less likely to be as consequential as it is for a photoperiod-sensitive flowering plant. Nevertheless, a timer-controlled cycle remains the most dependable routine because it prevents accidental overlighting and keeps conditions consistent from one day to the next.
How many hours should a grow light be on?
Use the plant group as the starting point, then adjust for natural light and the plant’s response. The schedules below are extension recommendations for total light in a 24-hour period, not just the hours supplied by the lamp.
| Plant group or goal | Suggested total light per 24 hours | Dark-period implication |
|---|---|---|
| Seedlings | 16–18 hours, according to University of Minnesota Extension | At least about 6–8 hours of darkness; avoid continuous light |
| Lettuce and herbs | 12–14 hours | About 10–12 hours of darkness |
| Foliage houseplants | 12–14 hours | About 10–12 hours of darkness |
| Flowering houseplants | 14–16 hours | Follow the species’ photoperiod requirement; protect the dark period for long-night plants |
| General home-gardener starting point | 12–14 hours, within a practical 10–16-hour range | Use a timer-controlled, uninterrupted dark interval |
The seedling recommendation deserves a qualification. Minnesota Extension gives 16–18 hours for starting seeds, while Maryland’s broad guidance says most plants should receive no more than 16 hours. Treat the crop and growth-stage recommendation as the controlling instruction: do not automatically apply an intensive seed-starting schedule to a mature houseplant.

These are starting points rather than promises of identical results. A weak fixture may need better placement or longer exposure within the recommended range, while a powerful fixture can stress leaves even when the clock setting is correct.
Can I leave my grow light on 24/7?
It is better not to make 24-hour lighting your default. Most plants need a dark period, and the general extension guidance places ordinary home schedules well below a full day of illumination.

Run the lamp for the target number of hours, then switch it off for the rest of the cycle. If you are raising seedlings, use the crop-specific schedule rather than assuming that a longer day is always better. If you are growing a flowering plant, prioritize the required uninterrupted night over squeezing in extra lamp hours.
When a plant appears to need more light, first check fixture distance, intensity and window exposure. Extending the photoperiod indefinitely is not a substitute for correcting a poorly positioned or undersized light.
Does natural window light count?
Yes. Add strong window exposure and artificial illumination together when calculating the daily total. University of Maryland’s guidance specifically recommends counting sunlight before deciding how long the lamp must run.

For example, if a plant receives six hours of strong window light, the lamp should provide only the additional hours needed to reach the plant’s target. The six hours do not automatically mean that six full lamp-hours can be added on top of the normal schedule.

Does a grow-light timer matter?
Yes. An outlet timer is the simplest way to preserve the same on/off cycle every day. Iowa State Extension recommends plugging supplemental fixtures into a programmable outlet timer and choosing a consistent schedule.
- Choose the target. Select the plant group’s total-light recommendation from the table.
- Account for sunlight. Estimate the hours of strong natural light the plant receives in the actual growing location.
- Set the lamp duration. Program the timer to supply only the remaining hours needed to reach the target.
- Protect the night. Keep the lamp off for one continuous interval, especially when growing a photoperiod-sensitive flowering plant.
- Check the setup. Confirm that the fixture, timer and power connection are secure and that the lamp actually switches at the programmed times.
A morning-to-evening schedule is easy for people to live with, but the exact clock hours matter less than consistency and the species’ required day length. Pick times that fit your room and keep them unchanged unless you intentionally revise the schedule.
Will a little room light interrupt flowering?
It can. Iowa State warns that room lights, lamps and streetlights may “pollute” the dark period and prevent flowering in plants that require long nights. The risk is greatest when light reaches the plant repeatedly or for long portions of the required night.

For a photoperiod-sensitive plant, place the plant where household lighting does not shine directly on the leaves after the grow light switches off. Close a curtain, move the plant away from a bright window at night, or shield it from a lamp without blocking the daytime light it needs. The objective is a genuinely dark, continuous interval rather than an exact brand of equipment.
How should flowering plants be scheduled?
Flowering houseplants are listed at 14–16 total light hours in Minnesota Extension’s schedule, but the correct night length depends on the species. A plant classified as short-day—or, more precisely, long-night—needs the required darkness to trigger or maintain flowering.
Do not infer the flowering schedule solely from the plant’s name or from a foliage-plant routine. Use the species’ stated photoperiod requirement when available, then make the timer and room lighting conform to it. If flowering is the goal, consistency is more important than occasional extra light.
Poinsettia, kalanchoe and Christmas cactus illustrate why this matters: they are identified by Maryland Extension as photoperiod-sensitive, so a lamp that seems harmless to a foliage plant can interfere with their flowering response if it shines during the night.
What if leaves bleach, scorch or stretch?
Light duration and light intensity are separate controls. A correct number of hours cannot compensate for a fixture that is too close or too weak.

- Bleached or scorched leaves: reduce intensity or move the fixture farther away, following Iowa State Extension’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Excessive reddening: treat it as a possible sign that the light is too intense; reduce intensity or increase distance.
- Leaf drop: reduce intensity or move the fixture farther away while checking that watering and temperature are not also changing.
- Stretching or weak, elongated growth: increase intensity or improve fixture placement rather than simply adding hours.
Make one adjustment at a time and give the plant enough time to show a response. Keep the timer cycle stable while you correct fixture placement; otherwise, you will not know whether the plant reacted to duration or intensity.
How do I choose a practical setup?
If a window already supplies much of the needed light, a programmable outlet timer may be all that is required to make the artificial portion consistent. If the room lacks sufficient window light, pair the timer with a balanced or full-spectrum indoor LED grow light selected for the plant’s space and intensity needs.
Place the fixture so its coverage reaches the plant evenly, then use the plant’s leaves as feedback. A timer controls when light is delivered; distance, fixture output and coverage control how much light reaches the foliage. Treat those as separate decisions.
Before leaving the setup unattended, run it through a complete day-night cycle. Verify that the lamp turns off at the intended time, that no secondary lamp illuminates the plant during the night, and that the cable and outlet are not under strain.
Common timing mistakes
- Counting lamp hours but ignoring the window: this can push the total above the plant’s intended daily exposure.
- Using continuous light because growth looks slow: slow growth may indicate insufficient intensity or poor placement, not a need for a 24-hour day.
- Changing the timer every few days: irregular cycles make it harder for the plant to receive a stable photoperiod.
- Letting a room lamp shine on a flowering plant: night interruptions can prevent flowering in long-night species.
- Applying a seedling schedule to every plant: seedlings, herbs, foliage plants and flowering plants have different recommended ranges.
- Ignoring visible stress: bleaching, scorching, excessive reddening, leaf drop and stretching are signals to review intensity and fixture distance.
A simple decision rule
Start with the plant category, subtract the hours of strong natural light, and program the remaining artificial-light period. Keep total illumination within the recommended range, then provide one uninterrupted dark interval. If the plant stretches, improve intensity or placement; if leaves bleach, scorch, redden excessively or drop, reduce intensity or increase distance. For flowering plants, eliminate night light pollution before changing the schedule.
