Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsually, no. A physical PS5 game does not run continuously from its disc. The console copies the playable game data to its internal SSD (or an installed compatible M.2 SSD) before you play, so a disc edition normally occupies about the same installed space as the equivalent digital edition. The disc can reduce the amount you must download initially when it contains the launch data, but patches, downloadable content and required language files can add more data later.
The disc also remains the license for a disc-based copy: in most cases, you must leave it inserted whenever you launch the installed game. Think of the disc as an installation source and ownership check, not as removable storage that lets you bypass the PS5’s SSD.

What happens when you install a PS5 game from a disc?
When you insert a PS5 game disc, the console reads the game files and installs them to console storage. Sony states that PS5 games need to reside on the PS5’s internal SSD before play. The optical drive is therefore used to copy data and verify the license; it is not fast enough, or designed, to stream the complete game during normal play.

The files that occupy space are on the SSD, while the disc supplies the permission to start the disc-based version. If you remove the disc, the installed files remain on the SSD, but the game generally will not launch until the correct disc is inserted again.

Two-disc releases
Some large releases split their data across two discs. Sony’s installation sequence is to insert the data disc first, wait for its copy to finish, and then insert the play disc when prompted. Installation completes automatically after the swap. Once installed, the play disc must remain in the drive whenever you play, even though the data disc is no longer needed for routine launching.
Saved data is separate from the game install
Save files and installed game data are stored on PS5 console storage. A disc does not hold your progressing saves in a way that frees SSD capacity. Deleting a game installation can remove its installed files while leaving saved data, depending on what you select in the console’s storage-management tools; reinstalling from the disc then copies the game again.
Do PS5 disc games take the same space as digital games?
In most cases, the installed footprint is comparable because both editions place the playable files on the same type of SSD storage. The exact result is title-dependent: a disc may include one build of the game while a digital package may download another set of language files, bonus content or a newer version. Sony does not publish a universal average or percentage showing that physical games save a particular amount of space.

| Question | Physical disc | Digital download |
|---|---|---|
| Initial acquisition | Copies data from the disc; an internet connection may still be needed for patches or additional content. | Downloads the game data over the network. |
| Installed storage after setup | Usually comparable to digital, with the final size determined by the title and installed content. | Usually comparable to a disc installation, with title-specific variation. |
| Updates | Updates download and install when available. | Updates download and install when available. |
| Launch license | The play disc normally must be inserted. | Your account entitlement authorizes launch; no disc is required. |
| Transfer to another person | The physical copy can generally be lent or resold under normal ownership rules. | The account-bound entitlement generally cannot be resold. |
The practical storage calculation is therefore simple: reserve SSD capacity for the installed PS5 title, regardless of whether the box or a download code supplied it. A disc can change how much data travels over your connection, but not the fundamental requirement for local playable files.

What does a disc save during the first installation?
A disc can contain the launch build, allowing the console to copy that portion locally instead of downloading every byte from PlayStation Network. This is most useful on a slow, capped or unreliable connection. It does not guarantee an offline-ready experience, however. A game can require a day-one patch, online-only components, additional languages, accessibility files, an expansion or other content that is not present on the disc.
Requirements vary by game, and there is no single Sony rule that every disc contains a complete final package. Check the game’s own installation prompts and update status rather than assuming the printed disc is the newest version.
Installation and downloading can overlap
While the console is copying disc data, it can also identify updates or supplemental downloads. The result may be a disc copy followed by a network download, or a download that starts before the copy is complete. The finished game still occupies the combined installed size, not merely the size of the optical media content.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo physical PS5 games need updates?
Yes. PlayStation says that when you start a game or app, it automatically updates to the newest version available. Updates can fix bugs, change performance, add features or supply content that was not ready when the disc was manufactured. They are installed on the SSD and consume additional capacity until older data is replaced or optional content is removed.

Check for an update manually
- Highlight the installed game on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update and follow the on-screen download and installation prompts.
Automatic updating does not mean every title is permanently current without an internet connection. If the console is offline, it can use the build already on the disc, but any required patch or online service will remain unavailable until you reconnect. A disc can also prompt for a newer PS5 system-software version; system software is separate from the game’s own patch.
Can you play a PS5 game directly from the disc?
No. The console must install the PS5 game to its internal SSD before play. This requirement applies even when the disc contains all of the launch data. The drive may verify the disc during launch and while the game is running, but it is not acting as the game’s primary storage.
This explains why swapping discs does not create a storage-saving loophole. You can keep a physical collection on a shelf, yet each title you want to play must still have its installed files on the console’s playable storage. Uninstalling one game frees its SSD space; the disc lets you reinstall later but does not make the game playable while uninstalled.

| Storage method | What it is useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Internal console SSD | Required location for installed PS5 games and normal play. | Finite capacity; deleting an installation is necessary when space is exhausted. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | Direct expansion for installing and playing PS5 games. | It must meet Sony’s compatibility, interface and performance requirements. |

| Cloud storage | Keep supported save data available for recovery or use on another console. | Cloud saves preserve progress, not the installed game files themselves. |
Choose an M.2 SSD for games you play regularly
An M.2 SSD is the direct expansion route when you want more games installed and playable without repeatedly copying them. Select a model that satisfies Sony’s published compatibility and performance requirements, install it in the PS5’s expansion bay, and use the console’s storage controls to set it as the destination for eligible PS5 games. A drive that does not meet those requirements can produce installation failures or unreliable performance, so capacity alone is not a sufficient specification.
Use USB storage as an archive
USB extended storage is useful when you want to keep a large library without paying for another internal expansion immediately. You can move an installed PS5 game to USB and later copy it back when you want to play. The copy-back step is mandatory for PS5 titles; launching directly from the USB device is not supported.
Remove optional content where a game allows it
Some games provide a Preferred Install or similar content-management choice. In supported titles, you may prioritize a mode or remove selected modes, language packs or other components after installation. The available choices are controlled by the game, so do not assume that every title offers the same granularity.
How PS4 discs and PS5 upgrades affect storage
Eligible PS4 disc owners can download a digital PS5 version on a PS5 with a disc drive. The downloaded PS5 version occupies storage like any other PS5 game; the fact that the entitlement began with a PS4 disc does not make the upgrade a disc-streamed install.

The PS4 disc must remain inserted each time you play the upgraded PS5 version. If you sell, lend or otherwise separate the disc from the console, the upgrade’s launch check will fail even though the PS5 files remain installed. A PS5 model without a disc drive cannot perform this disc-based license check.
Common storage and update misunderstandings
“The disc is full, so the install should be that size.”
The printed disc capacity is not a promise about the final SSD footprint. Installed files can be reorganized, duplicated for fast access, or supplemented by patches and optional content. The only reliable figure is the space shown by the console for that particular title and its selected components.
“Buying physical means I never need internet.”
Internet access may not be needed for the initial copy of the launch build, but it can be needed for updates, extra downloads, online features, account checks or a required system-software version. Treat offline play as title-specific rather than a guaranteed property of every disc.
“Deleting the game means I lose my purchase.”
Deleting the installed files frees SSD capacity; it does not invalidate a disc license. Insert the disc again whenever you want to reinstall, then allow time for the original copy and any current updates.
“A patch only replaces data and cannot increase storage use.”
Some updates replace existing files, while others add assets or modes. A patch can therefore increase the amount of storage required even when the base installation was already present.
Physical or digital: which is better for your storage situation?
Choose physical when download time or resale matters
- You have a slow or metered connection and want the launch data supplied locally.
- You lend, resell or collect games and accept inserting a disc to play.
- You are comfortable downloading patches and keeping enough SSD space for the completed install.
Choose digital when convenience matters more than disc ownership
- You switch between games frequently and do not want to change discs.
- You want a license tied to your account rather than a physical item.
- You have a fast, dependable connection and enough storage for the complete download and its updates.
Neither choice removes the need to plan local storage for PS5 games. The meaningful differences are how the first data arrives, how you prove ownership and whether the copy can be transferred to another person.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before installing a disc game
- Check the free space shown for the title and leave additional room for updates or optional content.
- Insert the disc and let the console finish the data-disc copy before swapping to a play disc on two-disc releases.
- Connect to the internet if you want the latest patch, downloadable content or language options.
- Run Check for Update from the game’s Options menu if the console does not begin updating automatically.
- Keep the play disc accessible; the installed game normally cannot launch without it.
- If space becomes tight, move infrequently played PS5 titles to USB storage, delete their installations for later reinstall, or add a Sony-compatible M.2 SSD for games you want to keep playable.
