Not necessarily. A five-minute screenshot interval was reported for one North Korean smartphone examined by the BBC, not established as a standard for every phone. Broader reporting describes the Trace Viewer app taking screenshots at random intervals or while a phone is in use. What happens to those images after capture remains unclear.
Where does the five-minute claim come from?
TechSpot reported on June 2, 2025, that the BBC examined a smuggled North Korean handset that captured an image every five minutes. TechSpot said the handset had been brought out of the country by Daily NK, a Seoul-based outlet. That is a report about one examined device, not evidence of a universal setting across North Korean smartphones. TechSpot’s account of the BBC examination

A broader 2022 technical report describes Trace Viewer as taking screenshots at random intervals or while the phone is being used. A March 2026 analysis by 38 North likewise describes screenshots associated with phone use, without establishing a single interval for all models.
Project Reveal and 38 North’s 2026 cellular-sector analysis therefore support the existence of the feature, but not the claim that every device captures an image precisely every five minutes.
What can the phone’s owner see?
In the reported interface, users can see the date and time associated with a screenshot and which app was open. They cannot view or delete the image itself through that interface, according to the 38 North analysis and Project Reveal. This makes the metadata visible while the captured content remains inaccessible to the user.

Does this prove the government sees the screenshots?
No. The reports describe on-device capture and limits on the owner’s access, but they do not establish that images are automatically uploaded, how they might be transmitted, or whether authorities routinely inspect them. The 2026 38 North analysis says how authorities use the images is unclear. A surveillance purpose may be plausible, but the available reporting does not prove a particular transfer or review process.
How do screenshots fit into North Korea’s phone controls?
North Korean smartphones described by 38 North use customized Android software and digital signatures that restrict which apps and content the device will accept. Users rely on state-approved content and channels, including IT Exchange Centers, rather than a conventional app-store update system. Project Reveal also describes the signature controls and accounts from two technically knowledgeable interviewees about attempts to modify phones; those accounts do not establish how common successful modifications are.

Trace Viewer is one element of this controlled environment, not proof that every phone has identical software or behavior. The 38 North analysis cites 6.35 million mobile phone subscriptions in 2024, attributing the figure to the International Telecommunications Union. That is a count of subscriptions—not unique people, confirmed monitored smartphones, or devices known to use Trace Viewer.

What the reporting establishes—and what it does not
- Established: A BBC examination, as reported by TechSpot, found a five-minute screenshot cadence on one smuggled handset.
- Also reported: Broader descriptions of Trace Viewer say it captures screenshots at random intervals or while the phone is in use.
- Owner access: The user can see screenshot timing and the open app, but cannot view or delete the image through the described interface.
- Not established: That all North Korean phones use the same interval, that screenshots are automatically sent to authorities, or that officials routinely review them.
