Short answer: a phone cooler can improve sustained gaming performance when heat is making the phone throttle. It cannot guarantee higher FPS merely because the exterior feels cooler. In a 2026 experiment, a Peltier cooler lowered temperatures on two mid-range phones, but the frame-rate benefit ranged from almost zero to substantial depending on the phone and graphics setting.
What a phone cooler actually changes
A gaming phone cooler is an external fan or thermoelectric (Peltier) accessory that removes heat from the phone’s case and, indirectly, from the processor area. Its useful outcome is not “cold glass” by itself. The useful outcome is keeping the phone below the temperature at which its operating system reduces CPU or GPU clocks.

Modern phones protect themselves from excessive heat. When the processor approaches a thermal limit, the system lowers voltage, clock speed, or both. That protective behavior is called thermal throttling. The immediate symptoms can be falling FPS, longer frame times, stutter, touch-response delays, and a game that starts smoothly but becomes less consistent after several minutes.
A cooler can therefore act as a sustained-performance aid rather than a universal FPS upgrade. If your phone is already maintaining its clocks and the game is limited by a frame cap, graphics settings, network latency, or the game engine, extra cooling may change the temperature without changing the frame rate.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Why heat can cause FPS drops
Android’s game-development guidance states that devices can maintain high performance only for a limited time before they are thermally throttled. The length of that period depends on the phone’s design, ambient weather, recent use, battery state, case, and the workload itself.
“If the device gets too hot, it undergoes thermal-throttling, where performance is reduced in order to allow the device to cool down.”
That definition comes from the 2021 paper Thermal-Aware Overclocking for Smartphones. It describes the mechanism, not a guarantee that an accessory cooler will improve every game.

The GPU draws power for rendering, while the CPU handles game logic, physics, networking, input, and operating-system work. A 2016 ACM DAC study of cooperative CPU-GPU thermal management reported a 19% average performance improvement and more than a 90% reduction in temperature variance on a particular commercial platform running six Android games. That was a software and control method, not a clip-on cooler test, so its result should be read as evidence that thermal management can affect gaming performance—not as a predicted gain from an accessory.

What the 2026 cooler experiment found
The closest direct evidence is a June 2026 JASIEK article by I Made Yudi Dharmawan, Made Sutha Yadnya, and Djul Fikry Budiman. The experiment used two mid-range phones, Xiaomi and Infinix, running Mobile Legends: Bang Bang at Standard and HD graphics. Sessions lasted 10, 15, or 20 minutes, and every treatment combination was repeated 30 times. The comparison was gameplay with and without a Peltier cooler.
The cooler lowered measured temperature in every tested combination. The FPS result was much less uniform:
| Phone | Graphics setting | Average temperature reduction | Reported FPS increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi | Standard | 9.24°C | 0.23 FPS |
| Xiaomi | HD | 12.02°C | 14.08 FPS |
| Infinix | Standard | 9.19°C | 0.011 FPS |
| Infinix | HD | 10.92°C | 1.023 FPS |
These numbers illustrate the central distinction. Cooling was consistent, but the performance response depended on the phone and workload. Xiaomi at HD gained substantially more FPS than Xiaomi at Standard, while Infinix showed only a small change at either setting. The study does not establish a universal percentage gain, a best cooler, or results for other phones, games, room temperatures, or session lengths. Its article page also indicates that the underlying data download was not available, so the published abstract is the available quantitative summary.

Manufacturer specifications can confirm that an accessory lowers a measured surface temperature, but they do not automatically demonstrate smoother gameplay. ASUS reports up to 15°C lower surface temperature for the AeroActive Cooler 5 and up to 25°C for the AeroActive Cooler 6 in its own laboratory comparisons against the corresponding phone without the cooler. Those are surface-temperature differences, not independent frame-rate benchmarks. The Cooler 6 page also notes that actual performance may vary.

Surface temperature, internal chip temperature, thermal headroom, throttling status, average FPS, and frame-time consistency are related but different measurements. A cooler may make the back of a phone feel dramatically less hot while the game is already capped at 60 frames per second. Conversely, a modest surface change could still preserve internal clocks if it keeps the processor away from a throttling threshold.
When a cooler is most likely to help
- Long sessions: The longer a demanding game runs, the more likely heat accumulation becomes a limit. A five-minute test can miss the drop that appears after 20 or 30 minutes.
- High graphics workloads: HD or higher rendering settings can create enough sustained GPU load to expose thermal limits. The Xiaomi results in the 2026 experiment show why graphics setting matters.
- A phone that starts fast and then slows: A clear performance decline after the device becomes hot is consistent with thermal throttling, although it is not proof by itself.
- Warm environments or restrictive cases: Heat has less room to escape when ambient temperature is high or a case blocks the phone’s hottest area.
When cooling probably will not raise FPS
- A fixed frame cap: If the game or display is set to 60 FPS, cooling cannot create frames above that limit.
- A non-thermal bottleneck: Network delay, CPU-heavy game logic, storage pauses, background activity, or a game-engine limit can cause stutter without thermal throttling.
- A phone that never throttles in your test: Lower temperature is still a valid result, but there is no lost performance for the cooler to recover.
- A short benchmark: Peak FPS during the opening minutes may look identical with and without cooling because the phone has not reached its sustained limit.
How to test whether a cooler helps your phone
A controlled before-and-after test is more useful than a single temperature reading. Keep the workload and environment as constant as possible.
- Choose one repeatable scenario. Use the same game mode, map, graphics preset, resolution, frame-rate setting, brightness, and network condition for both runs. Pick a demanding section that you can reproduce rather than comparing unrelated matches.
- Control the starting state. Begin each run with a similar battery level, close background apps, remove or keep the case consistently, and let the phone return to the same starting temperature. Do not compare a cool morning run with a hot afternoon run.
- Run long enough to expose sustained behavior. Record at least 20 minutes when possible. The 2026 experiment used 10-, 15-, and 20-minute sessions, showing why duration must be attached to any result.
- Measure more than the case temperature. Record average FPS and, if the game provides it, frame-time or 1% low data. Note the phone’s temperature reading and any available thermal-status or throttling indicator. Android’s thermal guidance treats thermal headroom as an estimate of proximity to severe throttling and warns that some devices do not fully support every status signal.
- Repeat each condition. Run several cooler and no-cooler trials, alternating their order so that a naturally cooler room or changing battery level does not always favor one condition.
- Compare sustained results. Look for a smaller FPS decline over time, better frame-time consistency, or a later onset of throttling. A lower starting temperature with identical late-session FPS is a cooling win but not a demonstrated performance win.
How to read the result
| What you observe | Likely interpretation | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature falls and late-session FPS stays higher | Heat was probably limiting sustained performance | A cooler may be worthwhile for long sessions |
| Temperature falls but FPS is unchanged | The phone was not thermally limited, or another bottleneck controls performance | Do not buy solely for FPS; consider comfort and battery conditions instead |
| FPS varies widely between runs | Network, background load, scene complexity, or inconsistent starting conditions may dominate | Standardize the test before drawing a conclusion |
| FPS is unchanged because it reaches the same cap | The game or display limit is the ceiling | Cooling cannot remove that software or panel limit |
What to check before buying a phone cooler
Compatibility and contact
Check the phone model, attachment method, camera bump, case thickness, and the location of the processor hotspot. Model-specific accessories such as ASUS ROG AeroActive Cooler 5 for the ROG Phone 5 series and AeroActive Cooler 6 for ROG Phone 6 are designed around particular phones; they are not universal recommendations. A cooler that touches only a thick case or misses the intended hotspot may deliver a disappointing result.
Cooling mode and power
Read the manufacturer’s power instructions. The AeroActive Cooler 6 documentation distinguishes fan-only operation, a phone-powered thermoelectric mode, and an externally powered mode. Those modes can differ in cooling output and in how much power the phone or charger must supply. Treat the stated operating conditions as part of the specification rather than assuming the headline temperature figure applies in every mode.

What the specification measures
Ask whether a quoted figure is a surface-temperature comparison, an internal sensor reading, or a gaming benchmark. A claim such as “up to 25°C cooler” is not equivalent to “25 more FPS.” “Up to” also describes a maximum observed laboratory result, not a guaranteed value in your room, case, game, or phone configuration.
Noise, handling, and session practicality
An accessory can be effective yet inconvenient if it blocks buttons, interferes with wireless charging, adds cable clutter, or produces distracting fan noise. These are practical fit questions to check for your model. They do not determine whether the phone is thermally throttling, but they determine whether you will actually use the cooler for long sessions.

Temperature is an intermediate measurement. The performance question is whether clocks, FPS, or frame times change under the same sustained workload. Report both outcomes separately.

Thermal throttling is a sustained-load behavior. A short run can show identical performance because both phones are still operating below their thermal limits.

Changing several settings at once
Switching from Standard to HD, changing frame-rate limits, removing a case, and adding a cooler in the same comparison makes the result impossible to attribute. Change one treatment at a time.
Using one phone as a universal benchmark
Thermal limits vary with chip design, cooling hardware, software tuning, battery condition, weather, and recent use. The Xiaomi and Infinix results demonstrate that even the same cooler and game can produce different FPS changes.
Bottom line
Phone coolers can improve gaming performance, but only when heat is the reason performance is falling. The strongest case is a demanding game played for a long session on a phone that becomes slower as it heats up. In that situation, cooling can preserve thermal headroom and reduce sustained FPS loss. If the phone is not throttling, the game is frame-capped, or another bottleneck is responsible, the cooler may reduce surface temperature without increasing FPS. Test your own phone under repeatable conditions, and treat temperature claims as cooling data—not as a promise of a particular frame-rate gain.
