Yes, but only under the right conditions. Phase-change materials (PCMs) can absorb excess heat during a hot period and release it later, reducing indoor temperature swings and shifting cooling demand. They are not passive air conditioners, a substitute for insulation or shading, or a guaranteed payback upgrade. Their value depends on the PCM’s phase-change temperature, whether it can reset during the available cool period, where it is installed, and how the existing building handles heat, air leakage and ventilation.
Evidence from hot-weather reviews, a California residential retrofit project and a 2025 Australian study supports PCM as a potentially useful part of an envelope upgrade. The results are configuration- and climate-specific. An older home should therefore be assessed as a complete assembly—insulation, windows, leakage, thermal mass, ventilation, solar exposure and occupancy—before anyone chooses a PCM product.

What a phase-change material does in a building
A PCM stores heat as it changes phase, usually between solid and liquid, and releases that heat when it changes back. During the phase-change range, it can absorb a relatively large amount of heat without the same temperature rise that a conventional material would experience. In a wall or ceiling assembly, that creates a time delay and can flatten the indoor temperature peak.
The effect is a daily thermal cycle, not a one-time capacity. A PCM must first charge by absorbing heat and then discharge—reset—when surrounding conditions allow it to release that heat. If the material stays warm overnight, it may begin the next hot period partly charged and have less useful capacity left.

That is why the material’s phase-change temperature matters. A product selected for a cool climate may not begin absorbing heat at the right indoor or cavity temperature in a hot climate. Conversely, a PCM that melts at a temperature above the building’s normal operating range may rarely activate. The useful range must overlap the temperatures the particular wall, ceiling or room actually experiences.
PCM performance also depends on latent heat capacity, thermal conductivity, thickness, layer position, solar exposure and operating conditions. A 2025 review of PCM integration in building envelopes identifies these interacting variables and reports load reductions of up to 30% and indoor temperature fluctuations as low as 2 °C across the studies it reviewed. Those are review-level upper and lower bounds, not typical results for every retrofit.
When PCMs can help in a hot climate
The daily temperature cycle must provide a reset window
A PCM is most useful when the building heats enough during the day to charge the material and becomes cool enough later to discharge it. Nighttime ventilation, lower outdoor temperatures, openable windows and mechanical ventilation can all affect that reset. In a hot climate with warm nights, the material may not solidify or otherwise return to its starting state before the next day.
The 2023 Journal of Energy Storage review on PCM applications under hot-weather conditions identifies selection of a suitable PCM as a central challenge. Its conclusion is conditional: PCMs can absorb heat during the relevant hot period and release it when conditions permit, but their benefit is limited when the material cannot complete the cycle.
PCM does not remove the heat source
Solar radiation through unshaded windows, a poorly insulated roof, air leakage and internal gains still add heat. A PCM can delay or smooth the resulting temperature rise, but it does not make those gains disappear. If the building envelope admits more heat than the material can store, indoor temperatures will eventually rise.

For that reason, PCM is generally considered with measures such as exterior shading, improved insulation, air sealing, reflective surfaces and a ventilation strategy. The order matters: reducing unwanted heat gains can make a smaller PCM installation more useful and improve comfort even if the PCM is not activated every day.
Placement changes the result
PCM boards or panels need thermal contact with the space they are intended to moderate. A layer buried behind low-conductivity materials may respond slowly or fail to participate fully in the daily cycle. Wall and ceiling placement also experience different solar exposure and room-side temperatures. The 2025 Australian study specifically examined PCM boards on both walls and ceilings; its reported results cannot be transferred directly to a ceiling-only or wall-only installation.

What the retrofit evidence says about older buildings
California: PCM as part of a wall-retrofit package
The California Energy Commission’s report Phase Change Material-Enhanced Insulation for Residential Exterior Wall Retrofits (report CEC-500-2024-086, updated July 12, 2024) evaluated PCM integration alongside a typical drill-and-fill insulation retrofit and aerosol envelope sealing. Researchers used modeling validated by laboratory testing and varied PCM thickness, insulation levels, envelope sealing, thermal mass, window opening and nighttime ventilation.
Field demonstrations of the package took place in three homes in Vallejo, Sacramento and Los Angeles. This is useful evidence that PCM can be incorporated into an existing-home retrofit rather than only a new building. It is not proof that every older wall can accept the same assembly, nor does the report summary establish universal cost-effectiveness or a single installation specification.
Why the existing assembly matters
Older homes differ widely. One may have little insulation but substantial masonry thermal mass; another may have insulated walls but leaky windows and a hot attic. The same PCM thickness can therefore have different charging and discharging opportunities in each building. Occupancy also matters: a home occupied during the afternoon has different comfort priorities from one that is empty until evening.

Before selecting a product, identify the current insulation level, wall and ceiling construction, air-leakage paths, window condition, shading, thermal mass, ventilation method and likely nighttime cooling. These are not optional details; they determine whether the PCM sees the temperatures needed to work.
Climate-specific results from Australia
A 2025 Journal of Energy Storage article, Enhancing building energy performance and climate resilience with phase change materials and reflective coatings, combined experiments with validated EnergyPlus simulations. It analyzed retrofit configurations in Sydney, Alice Springs and Darwin, including PCM and reflective coatings. The study reported the following results for its analyzed configurations:
| Location | Reported annual energy savings for optimal modeled configurations | Reported heatwave discomfort reduction |
|---|---|---|
| Sydney | 31.9 kWh/m²·year | 100% |
| Alice Springs | 60.6 kWh/m²·year | 86.7% |
| Darwin | 85.6 kWh/m²·year | 92.6% |
The same study reported that PCM boards applied to both walls and ceilings reduced peak indoor air temperature by up to 5.8 °C and shifted peak load by up to 71 minutes. It estimated payback periods from 5.3 to 24 years across the analyzed cases.
Every number in that table belongs to the study’s locations, assemblies, assumptions and optimized configurations. The work combined experiments and validated simulations and included reflective coatings, so it does not establish what a homeowner in another climate should expect from PCM alone. The large spread between locations illustrates why a local temperature cycle and a building-specific model are more informative than a single headline performance figure.
How to decide whether an older building is a good candidate
1. Document the envelope before choosing a material
- Record construction. Identify wall, roof and ceiling materials, cavity depth, existing insulation and any areas that cannot be opened.
- Find heat and air leaks. Check window and door seals, service penetrations, attic hatches, recessed lights and wall-to-floor or wall-to-roof junctions. Air sealing can change the indoor temperature cycle as much as adding thermal storage.
- Map solar exposure. Note unshaded east-, west- and roof-facing surfaces, glazing area and whether a reflective coating or exterior shade is feasible.
- Measure or estimate operating temperatures. Track indoor and outdoor temperatures through representative hot days and nights. Include the rooms and surfaces where PCM would be installed, not just a weather-station reading.
- Check ventilation and occupancy. Establish when windows can be opened safely, whether nighttime ventilation is practical, and when occupants need the most comfort.
2. Match the phase-change range to the building
Ask the supplier or designer for the PCM’s phase-change temperature range, latent heat capacity, thickness options and required installation position. Compare those specifications with the measured room or cavity temperatures. A nominal product name is not enough; two materials sold for the same general use can activate at different temperatures.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
3. Choose the location and assembly
Wall and ceiling boards expose different surface areas and heat flows. A ceiling beneath a sun-heated roof may have a large charging opportunity, while an interior wall may respond mainly to room loads. The selected location must also leave enough thermal contact for the PCM to respond and enough space for a compliant, durable installation.
4. Model the whole package
Use a qualified energy professional or a validated building-energy model to test insulation, air sealing, shading, ventilation, PCM thickness and placement together. The California project demonstrates this approach by varying these parameters rather than treating PCM as an isolated add-on. Ask whether the result is based on laboratory data, field measurements, simulation or a combination, and which assumptions drive the outcome.
5. Verify practical constraints
Confirm that the wall or ceiling can carry the added material, that moisture and fire requirements are addressed, and that installation will not block electrical, plumbing or ventilation access. The available evidence does not provide a universal building-code approval or installation detail for every older wall type, so local code and professional review remain necessary.
Comparing retrofit choices without overpromising
| Decision factor | What to compare | Why it changes PCM performance |
|---|---|---|
| Climate and daily cycle | Daytime heat, nighttime temperature and humidity; opportunity for night cooling | Determines whether the PCM charges and resets each day |
| Phase-change range | Material activation range versus measured indoor and surface temperatures | A mismatch can leave the material inactive or partly charged |
| Placement and thickness | Wall, ceiling or other location; exposed thickness and thermal contact | Controls how quickly heat reaches the PCM and how much heat it can store |
| Existing envelope | Insulation, leakage, windows, shading and thermal mass | Changes both the heat load and the temperatures seen by the PCM |
| Evidence quality | Laboratory test, field demonstration, validated simulation or optimized scenario | Indicates how directly a published result applies to the proposed home |
| Economics | Installed cost, energy tariff, maintenance and expected operating life | Determines whether energy savings can justify the installation |
This comparison is more useful than ranking PCM products by a single capacity number. A high-capacity material in the wrong temperature range or behind an unsuitable assembly may perform worse than a smaller, better-matched installation.

The Australian study’s 5.3-to-24-year payback range shows how strongly economics depend on location and configuration. Those estimates belong to the study’s energy prices, installation assumptions, modeled savings and selected retrofit packages. They are not a quote for an older home and should not be presented as a standard PCM payback period.

For a project estimate, include the installed PCM and labor cost, any necessary wall or ceiling repairs, insulation and air-sealing work, reflective coatings or shading, ventilation changes, local electricity tariffs and the hours when cooling operates. Test more than one weather year if the goal is resilience during heatwaves, because a material that provides comfort during extreme events may have a different financial value from one that produces daily energy savings.
Separate energy savings from comfort and resilience benefits. A retrofit may reduce the duration of uncomfortable indoor temperatures or shift a peak cooling load without producing a short financial payback. State those outcomes separately so the decision does not depend on an inflated energy-only claim.
Common failure modes and how to correct them
The PCM never seems to activate
Check whether room or surface temperatures ever reach the material’s phase-change range. If not, the selected temperature is mismatched; if only a thin layer reaches it, placement or thermal contact may be limiting the response. Corrective options include reassessing the location, improving heat transfer to the room side or selecting a better-matched PCM, subject to professional design.

This often indicates incomplete overnight reset. Examine nighttime outdoor temperatures, ventilation timing and internal heat gains. If nights remain too warm, the PCM may need a different operating strategy or may provide limited benefit in that climate.
The model predicts savings that the home does not deliver
Review assumptions about occupancy, window opening, shading, leakage, weather data and equipment schedules. Optimized simulations can represent a best-performing configuration that is difficult to reproduce in an occupied older home. Compare modeled inputs with measured temperatures and actual cooling operation.
PCM is installed before basic envelope work
Uncontrolled solar gain, roof heat and air leakage can overwhelm the storage capacity. Address feasible insulation, sealing and shading measures first or evaluate them in the same model. The California retrofit research treated PCM together with insulation and envelope sealing for this reason.
A practical go/no-go checklist
- The proposed PCM phase-change range overlaps measured temperatures in the target rooms or surfaces.
- The building has a credible way to discharge stored heat, such as cool nights or controlled ventilation.
- Insulation, air leakage, windows and solar exposure have been documented rather than assumed.
- Placement and thickness are supported by an assembly design, not only by a product brochure.
- The expected result is labeled correctly as laboratory, field, validated simulation or an optimized scenario.
- Installed cost, tariff, maintenance, comfort value and local code requirements have been included in the decision.
- A professional has checked structural, moisture, fire and access implications for the existing building.
If several checklist items are unknown, the next step is an envelope assessment and temperature monitoring—not buying PCM boards. If the conditions align, PCM can be a sensible component of a broader retrofit, particularly where reducing peak temperatures or shifting cooling demand has value.
