Yes, but only in specific modes. The Nintendo DS versions of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks include local wireless multiplayer, one-card DS Download Play, and wireless item-trading features. Phantom Hourglass supports two-player Battle Mode and Tag Mode, while Spirit Tracks expands local Battle Mode to two, three, or four players and adds Contact Mode treasure trading. Neither game offers a cooperative story campaign.
The original DS features require compatible DS hardware and the DS game-card releases. The Wii U Virtual Console editions are one-player and remove the original Multi-Card Play and DS Download Play functions.

How Phantom Hourglass multiplayer works
Battle Mode: a two-player local contest
Phantom Hourglass’s Battle Mode is a competitive match between two people using local wireless communication. Nintendo’s manual specifies two Nintendo DS systems and two Phantom Hourglass game cards for this version of the mode. Each player uses a separate system and cartridge, so two-card Battle Mode is the straightforward setup when both people own the game.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Insert a Phantom Hourglass cartridge into each DS system.
- Open the game and choose the multiplayer or Battle Mode option from the title menu.
- Have one player create or host the battle and the other join through DS Wireless Communications.
- Start the match after both systems show the connection.
This is a head-to-head mode rather than a cooperative adventure. The multiplayer rules are built around competing with another player, not controlling Link together through the single-player dungeons and story.
DS Download Play: one cartridge can host a battle
If only one person owns the game, the second DS can use DS Download Play. The host puts the Phantom Hourglass card in one system, selects the Download Play option, and the other system joins from the DS system menu. The guest does not need a copy of the game card for this battle.
Nintendo’s manual adds an important limitation: results from a Download Play battle are not saved. Treat this as a temporary local match. Progress, records, or other results should not be expected to persist after the session ends.
- Place the cartridge in the host DS.
- Launch Phantom Hourglass and select its DS Download Play battle option.
- On the second DS, choose the DS Download Play icon from the system menu.
- Select the game broadcast by the host and accept the download.
- Play the battle; remember that the Download Play results are not saved.
Because Download Play transfers the necessary battle software temporarily, both systems need to remain powered on and within wireless range until the match is complete.
Tag Mode: exchanging ship parts and treasure
Tag Mode is a different kind of local feature. It is not a battle and does not let two people enter a dungeon together. Instead, a player places ship parts or treasure in magical boxes and exchanges those items wirelessly with another player.

The DS can continue searching for Tag Mode partners even when the system is closed. That makes the feature suitable for carrying an activated DS while looking for another nearby player. Both people still need compatible DS hardware and an active Tag Mode session; closing the lid does not turn the feature into an internet service.
The former Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection mode
The original Phantom Hourglass manual described Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battles against friends, rivals, or players worldwide. Nintendo’s current product information states that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was discontinued on May 20, 2014. As a result, the official online battle service described in the manual is no longer available.
“Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection allows multiple The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass owners to play together over the internet—even when separated by long distances.”
That quotation describes the game’s original service, not a currently operating Nintendo network. Local wireless Battle Mode, Download Play, and Tag Mode are the relevant options today on original DS hardware.
How Spirit Tracks multiplayer works
Battle Mode: two to four local players
Spirit Tracks uses DS Wireless Communications for a larger local battle. The manual allows head-to-head play with up to three other people, for a total of two, three, or four players. Every participant can use a separate game card in the multi-card version.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Give each participant a DS system and, for multi-card play, a Spirit Tracks cartridge.
- Open the multiplayer Battle Mode on the host system.
- Have the other players join through DS Wireless Communications.
- Confirm the player list and begin the match when everyone is connected.
The four-player limit is a local-room limit, not an online matchmaking capacity. All systems must be nearby and communicating directly over the DS wireless connection.

One Spirit Tracks cartridge can host a Download Play session for as many as three additional DS users. That gives a maximum of four local participants with one host card. Guests join by selecting DS Download Play from their DS system menus, so they do not need to own the game.
- Insert the game card into the host DS and open the local Battle Mode.
- Choose the single-card or DS Download Play option.
- On each guest DS, select DS Download Play from the system menu.
- Choose the Spirit Tracks broadcast, accept the download, and wait for the host to start.
- Repeat for each guest, up to the three-guest limit.
Download Play is useful for a group that has only one physical copy, while multi-card play is the appropriate choice when each player owns the cartridge.
Contact Mode: trading treasure
Contact Mode lets players trade treasure items over DS Wireless Communications. Like Phantom Hourglass Tag Mode, it is an exchange feature rather than cooperative story play. The purpose is to move treasure between nearby players, not to create a shared campaign save or let several people control one adventure.

The manual’s multiplayer section documents local battle, Download Play, multi-card play, and Contact Mode. It does not document a Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection battle mode, so the game should not be presented as having official online matchmaking.
Is there cooperative story mode?
No cooperative campaign is documented for either title. The multiplayer features are separate activities: competitive Battle Mode, temporary Download Play sessions, and item exchanges through Tag Mode or Contact Mode. The main quests, dungeons, exploration, and save files remain single-player experiences.
This distinction matters if you are buying one of these games for two people to play through the adventure together. Local multiplayer can provide battles and trading, but it does not turn the story into a two-player game.

Original DS cartridges
For the documented local features, use the Nintendo DS, DS Lite, or DSi hardware with the original Nintendo DS game-card releases. Battle Mode, Download Play, Tag Mode, and Contact Mode depend on the DS Wireless Communications functions built into those systems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor two-card or multi-card sessions, every participant needs the matching cartridge. For Download Play, only the host needs the cartridge, subject to the player limits described above. The systems must be close enough for their local wireless connection, and each player needs a charged, functioning handheld.

Wii U Virtual Console editions
Nintendo’s Wii U pages list both Virtual Console versions as one-player releases. They do not include Multi-Card Play or DS Download Play. Buying the Wii U edition therefore gives access to the single-player game but not the original DS local multiplayer features.
The platform choice should be made before purchase: an original DS cartridge is the relevant version for local battles and wireless item exchange, while the Wii U Virtual Console version is a one-player edition.
Choosing the right setup
| What you want to do | Best-supported setup | What each player needs |
|---|---|---|
| Two-player Phantom Hourglass Battle Mode | Original DS cartridges with local wireless | Two DS systems and two game cards |
| One-card Phantom Hourglass battle | DS Download Play | Two DS systems; only the host needs the cartridge |
| Exchange Phantom Hourglass items | Tag Mode | Compatible DS systems and players with Tag Mode active |
| Two- to four-player Spirit Tracks battle | Local Battle Mode | Two to four DS systems; multi-card play uses one cartridge per player |
| Four-player Spirit Tracks battle with one copy | Single-card Download Play | Four DS systems; one host cartridge and up to three guests |
| Exchange Spirit Tracks treasure | Contact Mode | Compatible DS systems with local wireless enabled |
| Play on Wii U | Virtual Console edition | One player; DS multiplayer modes are not included |
Troubleshooting local play
The guest cannot see the Download Play broadcast
- Confirm that the host has the original DS cartridge inserted and has opened the correct Download Play option.
- On the guest system, use the DS system menu’s DS Download Play icon rather than launching a separate copy of the game.
- Keep the systems nearby, with wireless communication enabled and adequate battery power.
- Close other wireless sessions and restart both systems if the broadcast disappears.
A player expects saved Download Play results
Phantom Hourglass specifically states that Download Play results are not saved. A temporary match ending without a permanent record is therefore normal, not a failed save.
A Wii U copy does not connect to a DS
The Wii U Virtual Console versions are one-player adaptations and omit Multi-Card Play and DS Download Play. A Wii U copy cannot provide the original DS wireless session; use the DS game-card release and compatible DS handhelds for those features.
Tag Mode or Contact Mode does not exchange items
- Make sure both players are using the original DS versions and the correct wireless item mode.
- For Phantom Hourglass, place the intended ship parts or treasure in the magical boxes before starting Tag Mode.
- For Spirit Tracks, use Contact Mode rather than Battle Mode when the goal is treasure trading.
- Remain within local wireless range while the systems search and complete the exchange.
Bottom line for buyers and players
Choose Phantom Hourglass if you want two-player local battles, one-card Download Play, and Tag Mode exchanges. Choose Spirit Tracks if a larger local group matters: its Battle Mode supports up to four players, and one cartridge can host up to three Download Play guests. Both games’ item features are local wireless exchanges, not cooperative story play. The original Nintendo DS cartridges preserve these functions; the Wii U Virtual Console versions do not.
