Do Passive Speakers Need a Separate Amplifier?

Yes. Passive speakers have no built-in power amplifier, so they need amplified speaker-level output from an external device. That device can be a separate power amplifier, an integrated amplifier, or an AV receiver with suitable speaker outputs. The correct choice depends on impedance, channel count, sensitivity, listening distance, room size and desired volume.

What the answer means in practice

A passive loudspeaker contains the drivers, crossover network and enclosure, but not the power-amplifier stage that turns a low-level audio signal into the current and voltage needed to move its drivers. Connect one directly to a phone, television headphone output, DAC line output or other line-level source and it will normally be silent or extremely quiet; those outputs are designed to feed an amplifier input, not a speaker.

The amplifier does not have to be a separate box beside each speaker. “Separate amplifier” means separate from the passive speaker itself. A stereo integrated amplifier combines a preamplifier and power-amplifier section in one chassis. An AV receiver also qualifies when it has powered speaker terminals for the channels you intend to use. A separate preamp and power amplifier is another arrangement for systems that need more flexibility.

Before buying anything, identify the exact speaker model and read its manual. Confirm the speaker’s nominal impedance, the amplifier’s supported load range and the number of powered channels. Then consider how far you sit from the speakers, how large the room is, how loudly you listen and the speaker’s sensitivity. There is no universal wattage that is correct for every passive speaker.

Passive and powered speakers are built differently

Passive speakers

With passive speakers, the source component sends an audio signal to an amplifier. The amplifier supplies speaker-level power through speaker wire. Each speaker normally connects to its own amplifier channel, with the left and right channels forming a stereo pair. A multichannel installation requires enough powered channels for all the passive speakers you plan to operate.

Powered speakers

Powered, or active, speakers include amplification inside the enclosure. You can usually connect a source directly to their line, USB, optical, Bluetooth or other specified input without adding a conventional external power amplifier. That reduces the number of boxes and connections, but it also means the built-in amplifier is tied to the speaker design.

A pair sold as powered is not necessarily two independently amplified enclosures. Some designs put the amplifier in one cabinet and send amplified power to the second cabinet through a supplied speaker cable. Check the product manual rather than assuming that both boxes contain an amplifier.

What can serve as the amplifier?

Device Can it drive passive speakers? What to verify
Integrated stereo amplifier Yes, when it has speaker terminals and ratings that support the speakers. Left/right channel output, impedance range, power capability and the required source inputs.
AV receiver Yes, if it provides amplified speaker outputs for the channels being used. Powered-channel count, supported impedance, per-channel output conditions and whether any listed outputs are line-level only.
Power amplifier Yes, but it normally needs a preamp, DAC, streamer or other component that supplies a suitable line-level signal. Input sensitivity, gain, channel count, impedance support and how volume will be controlled.
Preamp, DAC or headphone amplifier alone Usually no. Look for actual speaker terminals and a specified power output. Line outputs are not speaker outputs.

The important distinction is the type of output, not the product category printed on the front. A component marketed as an “audio system” may offer only line-level outputs, while an AV receiver may include both preamp outputs and powered terminals. Never connect a passive speaker to a connector that the manual identifies as a pre-out, line-out, headphone-out or subwoofer pre-out.

How to match an amplifier to passive speakers

1. Check nominal impedance and load support

Find the speaker’s nominal impedance in its specifications and compare it with the amplifier’s stated supported impedance range. Impedance changes with frequency, so the nominal figure is a useful label rather than a constant electrical value. Klipsch explains that a loudspeaker can present different impedance at different music frequencies; an amplifier must therefore be suitable for the manufacturer’s stated load, not merely match a single number printed on a box.

If an amplifier cannot safely handle the speaker load, it may run excessively hot, shut down, distort or fail. Be especially careful when connecting multiple pairs to one amplifier, because the combined load can be more demanding than a single pair. Use the amplifier and speaker manuals for the exact arrangement instead of assuming that an impedance selector or a “two-speaker” switch makes every combination safe.

2. Provide enough channels

Count the passive speakers in the planned system and map each one to a powered amplifier channel. A two-channel amplifier is appropriate for a conventional left/right pair. A home-theater layout with a center, surrounds and other passive channels needs an AV receiver or multichannel power amplifier with enough powered outputs. Some receivers have unpowered preamp outputs for expansion; those outputs require an additional power amplifier.

3. Judge power from the listening goal, not one number

Power requirements depend on speaker sensitivity, listening distance, room acoustics, desired sound-pressure level and the content’s dynamic peaks. A speaker with higher sensitivity generally reaches a given output with less amplifier power than a less-sensitive speaker, all else being equal. A larger room or a longer listening distance usually requires more acoustic output than a near-field desk setup.

Do not treat the speaker’s maximum, peak or “power handling” number as a required amplifier wattage or as a direct loudness rating. Power-handling specifications describe what the speaker can tolerate under stated conditions; they do not account for sensitivity or how far away you sit. Klipsch notes that power rating alone does not determine loudness. Its guidance also describes a slightly higher amplifier rating than the speaker’s RMS handling as one possible matching approach, while noting that this is not mandatory in every system. Use that as context, not an absolute rule.

4. Check inputs and the system role

List every source you want to use: television, turntable, streamer, game console, computer or disc player. Select an amplifier with the needed analog or digital inputs, or plan the necessary converter or phono stage. A technically powerful amplifier is not useful if it cannot accept your sources or provide practical volume control.

Connection procedure

  1. Turn everything off. Disconnect the amplifier from power before making speaker connections. This reduces the chance of shorting an active output.
  2. Identify the correct terminals. On the amplifier, use the left and right speaker outputs (or the assigned multichannel outputs). On each passive speaker, use its speaker terminals. Do not use line-level or preamp connectors.
  3. Prepare speaker wire. Strip only enough insulation to make a secure connection. Keep loose strands from escaping the terminal.
  4. Observe polarity. Connect the amplifier’s positive terminal to the speaker’s positive terminal and negative to negative for each channel. Reversed polarity can make a stereo pair sound thin and reduce bass because the drivers move out of phase.
  5. Prevent shorts. Ensure bare conductors cannot touch each other, adjacent terminals or the amplifier chassis. A short can trigger protection circuitry or damage the output stage.
  6. Repeat channel by channel. Keep left and right, and any surround channels, connected to their corresponding outputs. Do not connect two amplifier outputs together.
  7. Power up at low volume. Select the correct source, play a familiar recording and raise the volume gradually. Stop if the amplifier clips, repeatedly shuts down, smells hot or becomes unusually hot.

Speaker-wire gauge and run length

Speaker wire carries the amplifier’s output, and resistance in a long or very thin run wastes some power. Gauge advice therefore depends on run length, current, connector type and the equipment. Klipsch’s AW-650 connection guide recommends 16-gauge or heavier stranded copper wire for that specific model and advises heavier wire for longer runs. That is model-specific manufacturer guidance, not a universal requirement for every passive speaker.

Follow the speaker and amplifier manuals first. Keep both conductors in a run the same length where practical, route them away from sources of damage and leave enough slack to avoid pulling on the terminals. A thicker cable cannot compensate for an amplifier that is incompatible with the speaker’s impedance, and expensive cable does not remove the need for correct polarity and secure terminations.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Connecting directly to a source

Symptom: little or no sound from a passive speaker connected to a television, DAC or phone output.
Correction: insert an amplifier with speaker-level outputs between the source and speaker. Verify that the source output is feeding an amplifier input, not the other way around.

Using an AV receiver’s pre-outs as speaker outputs

Symptom: a receiver appears to have the right channel labels, but the speakers remain silent.
Correction: use the receiver’s powered speaker terminals or add a compatible power amplifier to its preamp outputs. The manual will identify which connectors are line-level.

Ignoring impedance when adding speakers

Symptom: protection shutdowns, distortion or excessive heat after adding a second pair or changing speakers.
Correction: check the amplifier’s supported impedance for the actual combination. Disconnect the added load until the configuration is confirmed safe.

Assuming more watts always means better sound

Symptom: a buyer chooses an amplifier solely by its largest wattage number and still gets poor results.
Correction: evaluate sensitivity, distance, room, desired level, impedance and real input requirements together. Excessive level can damage speakers even when the amplifier’s rating looks adequate.

Assuming a “powered pair” has two independent amplifiers

Symptom: the second cabinet has no input socket or works only when connected to the first.
Correction: follow the supplied inter-speaker cable and the manufacturer’s wiring instructions. One cabinet may contain the entire amplification system.

Passive versus powered: which approach fits?

Consideration Passive speakers plus amplifier Powered speakers
Initial setup Requires amplifier selection, speaker wire and matching checks. Usually fewer separate components; connect sources as specified.
Component flexibility Amplifier and speakers can be replaced independently. Amplification is integrated with the speaker design.
System expansion Choose a multichannel receiver or add amplification when supported. Expansion depends on the speaker’s inputs and output features.
Failure or upgrade path A failed amplifier can often be replaced without replacing speakers. A failure in the integrated electronics may require service of the whole speaker unit.
Cable needs Speaker wire runs from each amplifier channel to each passive speaker. Power cables and source cables are required; a secondary speaker may still need speaker wire.

Neither architecture automatically sounds better. Passive systems reward careful matching and offer modular upgrades; powered systems trade that flexibility for a simpler installation and a fixed amplifier-speaker combination.

Quick decision checklist

  • Do the speakers have no built-in amplifier and only speaker terminals? Plan for external amplification.
  • Does the candidate device provide actual powered speaker outputs?
  • Does its supported impedance include the speakers’ nominal rating and intended wiring arrangement?
  • Are there enough powered channels for every passive speaker?
  • Do its inputs accept all planned sources?
  • Have sensitivity, listening distance, room size and target volume been considered instead of relying on peak power alone?
  • Will the chosen speaker wire suit the run length and the manufacturer’s instructions?

Once those checks pass, an integrated amplifier or AV receiver can be the complete amplification solution; a separate power-amplifier box is optional, not a requirement in itself.
