Yes—some animals do perform behavior that fits a careful comparative definition of kissing. Documented mouth-to-mouth contact occurs in bonobos, chimpanzees, orangutans, western lowland gorillas and some Afro-Eurasian monkeys. But a nose touch, a lick, grooming, food sharing or an open-mouth fight is not automatically a kiss. The answer depends on the contact itself, the social setting and the quality of the evidence.

What counts as a kiss in animals?

Everyday language uses “kiss” for many kinds of contact. Comparative researchers need a narrower rule so that unlike behaviors are not treated as one phenomenon. In their 2026 review, Matilda Brindle, Catherine F. Talbot and Stuart West define kissing as “non-agonistic interactions involving directed, intraspecific, oral-oral contact with some movement of the lips/mouthparts and no food transfer.”

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Each part of that definition does useful work:

  • Non-agonistic excludes biting, threats and mouth contact during a fight.
  • Directed means the contact is intentional rather than an accidental brush.
  • Intraspecific means between members of the same species. A dog licking a person may be affectionate, but it is not evidence of same-species animal kissing under this framework.
  • Oral-oral requires the mouths or mouthparts to meet. Nose-to-nose contact does not meet that condition.
  • Movement of the lips or mouthparts distinguishes a directed contact from simply bumping faces.
  • No food transfer separates a social kiss from premastication or the passing of food between mouths.

This is a comparative definition, not a claim that animals experience a human romantic kiss. It identifies a visible behavior. Its emotional meaning, evolutionary advantage and social function may differ by species and situation.

Which animals have documented kissing behavior?

The strongest comparative evidence is concentrated in primates. The 2026 review in Evolution and Human Behavior reports observations in most living large apes and in some Afro-Eurasian monkeys. A record means that researchers have described the behavior; it does not mean that every member of the species does it frequently or that it has the same purpose everywhere.

Animal group What has been reported How to interpret it
Bonobos Directed mouth-to-mouth contact is described in the comparative review and in PBS NOVA’s account of captive bonobos. Often presented as affiliative or greeting behavior in the captive examples. The review says bonobo kissing has largely been recorded in captivity or sanctuaries, not in the wild.
Chimpanzees Mouth-to-mouth contact appears in the review’s species records and in observations associated with social interactions. Context varies. Friendly contact and contact around conflict or competition should not be assigned one universal meaning.
Orangutans The review lists orangutans among great apes with kissing observations. The existence of records does not establish a common rate or a single function.
Western lowland gorillas Rare observations are included in the review. “Rarely recorded” is not the same as “never occurs”; observation opportunities and reporting differ among species.
Other large apes and some Afro-Eurasian monkeys The review reports additional species-level records. Some records are limited, so absence from a list of observations should not be treated as proof of absence.

The review also notes reports of behaviors popularly called kissing in mammals, birds, fish and insects. Those reports may involve very different actions, so they cannot all be grouped with primate mouth-to-mouth contact without checking the details.

Do bonobos kiss like humans?

Bonobos provide one of the clearest examples of animal behavior that resembles a kiss in form. PBS NOVA’s educational feature Read My Lips, created in January 2007, describes kissing among captive bonobos as generally friendly or affectionate and sometimes a greeting. That description is useful for the observed setting, but it is not a rule for every bonobo or every encounter.

The comparative review adds an important qualification: most published bonobo records come from captive or sanctuary animals, and its authors state that, to their knowledge, bonobos had not yet been observed kissing in the wild. Captive observations can reveal a behavior clearly, while still leaving open questions about how often it occurs in natural communities and what triggers it there.

Calling a bonobo kiss “affectionate” describes the social interpretation offered by the source. It does not demonstrate that bonobos attach the same romantic, cultural or symbolic meaning that humans may attach to kissing. A visible similarity in mouth contact is stronger evidence than a claim about an animal’s private emotional experience.

Do chimpanzees kiss?

Yes. Chimpanzee kissing is included in the comparative review’s records, and recent work has examined mouth contact alongside other forms of touch. Chimpanzees can use contact in friendly relationships, but mouth contact can also appear in situations involving tension, reconciliation or competition. The setting matters more than the label alone.

A Durham University account published on 22 July 2026 described research by Zanna Clay and Jake Brooker involving 116 apes in five groups over 60 observation sessions. The work took place at Lola ya Bonobo in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Chimfunshi in Zambia. Researchers examined friendly contact before feeding, including kissing, embracing and patting, and found that greater pre-feeding friendly contact was associated with more peaceful feeding alongside others.

That result is an association in the study setting. It does not show that kissing by itself caused tolerance, nor does it show that every chimpanzee kiss has a calming function. Clay and Brooker wrote that “pre-emptive friendly touch may be part of how that tolerance is maintained.” The finding is best understood as evidence that touch can be part of social regulation, not as proof of a human-style romantic motive.

What about orangutans, gorillas and monkeys?

The comparative review lists kissing observations in orangutans and western lowland gorillas, as well as in some Afro-Eurasian monkeys. These records broaden the comparison beyond bonobos and chimpanzees, but they do not create a ranking of which species “kisses most.” Researchers have not collected equally large or equally detailed datasets for every taxon.

Gorilla records are described as rare. A rare published observation can mean the behavior is uncommon, difficult to see, difficult to distinguish from other mouth movements, or simply underreported. Orangutan and monkey records likewise need to be read with their original context: who was observed, where, how many times and during what interaction.

The review’s species-level catalogue is therefore evidence of possibility, not a census. “No recorded kiss” can reflect limited observation rather than a behavioral impossibility, especially for animals that are hard to watch closely or that live in environments where oral contact is brief.

Behaviors that are often mistaken for kissing

Animal faces are used for many social and practical tasks. Similar-looking contact can have a different mechanism or function.

Nose-to-nose contact

Nose touching is reported widely across mammals. A 2026 review titled Exploring nose-to-nose contact in mammals describes it as common but underexplored, with proposed roles that vary with species and sociality. Nose contact may exchange information, coordinate movement, establish familiarity or serve another species-specific purpose. It is not mouth-to-mouth kissing under the definition above.

Food sharing and premastication

When one animal passes food to another, their mouths may meet. The transfer of food is precisely why the comparative definition excludes that contact. A parent feeding offspring or a group member sharing a meal can be highly social without being a kiss.

Grooming and licking

Grooming removes debris, maintains fur or skin and can reinforce a relationship. Licking may serve hygiene, feeding, caregiving or social bonding. Neither behavior becomes a kiss merely because it looks gentle or involves the mouth.

Aggressive mouth contact

Biting, snapping, jaw displays and mouth contact during a fight are agonistic behaviors. They fail the non-agonistic part of the definition even when the animals’ lips or mouths touch.

Cross-species contact with people

An animal touching or licking a human face may be affiliative, exploratory, food-related or conditioned by interaction with people. It does not establish that the animal uses a human concept of kissing, and it does not meet a same-species comparative criterion.

What does an animal kiss mean?

There is no single answer across species. Researchers can observe the form of contact and its immediate context; inferring its function requires repeated observations and tests.

  • Greeting or affiliation: PBS NOVA’s captive-bonobo account describes kissing as friendly, affectionate and sometimes a greeting.
  • Reassurance before competition: The 2026 Durham study linked greater pre-feeding friendly touch with more peaceful feeding, but measured an association involving several kinds of contact.
  • Conflict-related interaction: Chimpanzee mouth contact can occur in broader social and conflict-related contexts, so it should not automatically be translated as romance or affection.
  • Unknown function: For many species-level records, the available report establishes that contact occurred but does not establish why.

The comparative review states that the fitness benefits of kissing remain unclear and that available data are too limited for strong conclusions about adaptive function. That uncertainty is a result, not an invitation to fill the gap with speculation about love.

How old might kissing be?

Brindle, Talbot and West used comparative and phylogenetic evidence to estimate that kissing may have originated in the ancestor of the great apes approximately 21.5 to 16.9 million years ago. The estimate is a model-based reconstruction from sparse records. No one observed an ancestral ape kissing, and the interval does not prove that a human-style romantic kiss existed then.

The analysis found possible associations with multi-male mating systems, non-folivorous diets and premastication. These are hypotheses about patterns that might help explain where the behavior evolved, not settled explanations of its purpose. The authors describe the paper as “a starting point for future comparative research on the evolution of kissing.”

Evolutionary reconstructions should therefore be kept separate from direct observations. A field note shows what an animal did; a phylogenetic estimate proposes when a trait may have arisen; neither alone reveals the subjective meaning of the behavior.

Animal kissing versus human kissing

The most defensible comparison is behavioral. Humans, bonobos and chimpanzees can all make directed mouth-to-mouth contact. The contact may occur in a social relationship and may be repeated. That similarity supports comparison of the physical behavior.

Human kissing also carries meanings shaped by culture, personal history and relationship type. A human kiss may signal romance, kinship, greeting, sexuality, reassurance or ceremony. The animal studies summarized here do not establish equivalent cultural systems or romantic concepts in other species. Similar movement does not guarantee similar meaning.

Comparison question What the evidence supports What it does not establish
Do mouths meet? Directed mouth-to-mouth contact is documented in several primates. That every mouth contact is a kiss.
Is the contact friendly? Bonobo captive accounts describe friendly or affectionate contexts; chimpanzee pre-feeding touch is associated with calmer feeding. That every kiss is friendly or that kissing alone causes tolerance.
Is it a greeting? Greeting is reported as one context for captive bonobos. That greeting is the universal function across species.
Is it romantic? No source summarized here demonstrates a human-equivalent romantic concept. That animals kiss for romance because the contact looks similar.
Is it ancient? A model estimates a possible origin in the great-ape ancestor 21.5–16.9 million years ago. That an ancestral kiss was directly observed or had modern human meaning.

How to decide whether a video or claim shows a kiss

Online clips often use “kiss” as a catchy caption. A careful viewer can separate the visible behavior from the interpretation by checking these questions:

  1. Where do the body parts contact? Mouth-to-mouth contact is different from nose-to-nose contact or a lick on fur.
  2. Is the movement directed? Look for an intentional approach and contact rather than a collision during play or feeding.
  3. Is food exchanged? If food passes between mouths, classify the event as feeding or food sharing unless evidence supports an additional kiss-like action.
  4. Is there aggression? Biting, threat displays and wrestling around the mouth are not non-agonistic kisses.
  5. Are the animals the same species? Cross-species contact with a person or another animal has a different evidentiary status.
  6. What is the setting? Wild, sanctuary and captive observations answer different questions about natural frequency and context.
  7. How strong is the record? Repeated observations or a systematic dataset are more informative than one anecdote.
  8. What exactly did the source claim? “Observed mouth contact” is a behavioral statement; “showed love” is an interpretation that needs separate evidence.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us

The evidence supports a limited but clear conclusion: kissing-like mouth contact has evolved in more than one animal lineage, especially among great apes and some monkeys. The same outward form can appear in different settings, and not every reported example has the same strength of documentation.

The evidence does not support saying that bonobos are the only animals besides humans that kiss, that all great apes kiss routinely, or that every animal mouth contact expresses love. The comparative review specifically warns that its data are incomplete. A species absent from the published records is not thereby shown never to perform the behavior.

For readers comparing animals with humans, the safest order is to identify the contact, name the context, state the observation source and then qualify the interpretation. That approach preserves the interesting similarity without erasing the biological differences.
