Leakage depends on volume, fit, design, distance and how quiet the surroundings are. Leaving your ears uncovered may let you hear more ambient sound than sealed earbuds do, but safe listening and outdoor awareness still depend on your choices and attention.
Do open-ear earbuds leak sound?
They can. Because open-ear earbuds do not seal the ear canal, some playback can travel outward. Whether someone nearby notices it depends on the earbuds’ design and fit, playback volume, distance and background noise. The available sources support “possible and variable,” not a universal leakage level or a claim that any model is completely leak-proof.

Bose says its Ultra Open Earbuds are designed to direct sound toward the ear while minimizing leakage. The company says nearby people generally will not hear audio at typical volumes, but it may be noticeable at very high volumes in very quiet surroundings. That is Bose’s product claim, not an independent comparison across earbuds. Bose’s product page describes the approach.

Soundcore similarly says leakage is an inherent feature of open-sound designs and that people nearby may hear playback at high volumes, though this is less likely at normal volumes. This is manufacturer guidance, not a standardized test result. Soundcore’s support article explains its view of leakage.

Shokz describes its DirectPitch technology as directing sound toward the ear and using reverse sound waves to reduce leakage. That, too, is a manufacturer description rather than independent validation. Shokz’s technology page outlines the claim.
Can people nearby hear open-ear earbuds?
Possibly, especially if you turn the volume up, are in a quiet place or sit close to someone. If you need privacy—for example, on public transit or in a shared office—do not assume open-ear earbuds keep audio to yourself. Lowering the volume can reduce how noticeable leakage is, but the cited sources do not establish a setting that guarantees privacy.
Are open-ear earbuds safe to wear outdoors?
They may let ambient sounds reach you more readily than sealed earbuds, which can be useful on a walk or run. But hearing some surroundings is not the same as reliably detecting an approaching car, cyclist or warning signal. Traffic, wind, loud playback, the route and your attention can all affect what you notice. The Independent’s 2025 guide to open-ear headphones discusses environmental trade-offs and notes that loud surroundings can overwhelm open designs.

Use your eyes as well as your ears. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises pedestrians: “Stop, look and listen. Stay alert when you’re walking—use your eyes and ears to stay safe.” Its guidance also recommends looking left-right-left when crossing. Open-ear earbuds do not replace those precautions. See NHTSA’s pedestrian safety guidance.
For cycling or other road use, check the rules that apply where you are: requirements vary by jurisdiction, and the sources here do not establish local rules. Regardless of the activity, keep playback low enough to remain attentive and do not rely on earbuds alone to detect hazards.
Does open-ear design protect your hearing?
No. Whether an earbud seals the ear canal does not remove the hearing risk from sound that reaches your ears. The World Health Organization (WHO) says risk depends on both sound level and listening time. Its safe-listening guidance recommends keeping device volume below 60% of maximum, monitoring sound exposure and staying below 80 dB on average. WHO gives 80 dB for up to 40 hours per week as an example; at 90 dB, its example falls to four hours per week. These are WHO’s guidance examples, not a guarantee that a particular device’s volume setting corresponds to those sound levels.

A 60% setting is not a direct sound-level measurement: volume scales differ between devices, earbuds and listening conditions. Use built-in exposure monitoring or volume-limiting features where available, and reduce listening time when listening loudly. WHO’s current advice is on its safe-listening Q&A.

There is no universal leakage figure established by the sources here, so a manufacturer’s claim about reducing leakage should not be treated as proof that no one nearby will hear playback. Compare products on the conditions that matter to your use:
- Leakage evidence: Look for volume and distance details, and distinguish a brand’s claim from independent testing.
- Ambient awareness: Consider where you will use them, while remembering that open ears cannot guarantee you will hear a particular sound in traffic or other noise.
- Fit and stability: Check whether the design suits your intended activity and stays comfortable on your ears.
- Comfort and compatibility: If relevant, look for documented information about your ear shape or wearing glasses.
- Sweat and water resistance: Check the official specification for the exact model rather than assuming all open-ear earbuds have the same protection.
The Independent’s guide offers editorial context on open-ear trade-offs, while Bose and Shokz describe their own leakage-reduction approaches. These sources do not establish a universally best model or a standardized cross-model leakage result.
