Do OLED Gaming Monitors Have Input Lag?

OLED’s fast pixel response does not eliminate input lag. Learn how the two measurements differ and what to check when choosing or troubleshooting a gaming monitor.

Yes. OLED gaming monitors have input lag: the display needs time to receive a signal and begin showing the image. OLED’s exceptionally fast pixel response is a separate measure, not proof of zero input lag. To judge how responsive a monitor will feel, compare measured input lag at the refresh rate and resolution you actually use—and consider the rest of your gaming setup too.

Input lag and pixel response are different

Monitor input lag is the time between the monitor receiving a signal and the image starting to appear. Pixel response time measures how long the pixels take to finish changing from one color to another. The stages happen in sequence: input lag concerns when the transition starts; response time concerns how long it takes to complete. RTINGS explains its definition and testing method in its monitor input-lag methodology.

That distinction matters when reading specifications. A manufacturer’s “0.03 ms” or similar response-time figure is not an input-lag measurement. OLED pixels can transition extremely quickly, but that does not mean the display has no delay before showing the signal.

What affects a monitor’s input lag?

Refresh rate and operating resolution

Refresh rate affects the timing contribution from a display’s refresh cycle. RTINGS gives minimum input-lag contributions of 4.17 ms at 120 Hz and 8.33 ms at 60 Hz. These are stated minimums, not measured results for every OLED monitor. A monitor’s actual processing delay depends on the model.

  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth and more realistic scenes

Compare measurements made at the same resolution and refresh rate. For a console or a PC game that runs at a limited frame rate, check results at 60 Hz or 120 Hz as appropriate. For a high-refresh-rate PC, also check the monitor’s native-resolution maximum-refresh result.

Monitor modes and scaling

Some monitors need a Game or Instant mode to reach their lowest input-lag reading; RTINGS notes this can be particularly important on some LG monitors. Scaling a non-native resolution can also add delay on some displays. Where practical, use the monitor’s highest refresh rate supported by the source and let the graphics card upscale rather than the monitor.

VRR, HDR, and test method

RTINGS reports that variable refresh rate (VRR) and HDR rarely affect input lag in its testing. Its method uses a photodiode at the center of the screen, records when the image begins appearing, and averages repeated readings. Other reviewers may measure at a different screen position or combine different latency components, so figures from different methods are not necessarily directly comparable.

The monitor is only one part of system latency

A sluggish-feeling game does not automatically point to the display. Rendering, a mouse or controller, a keyboard, and network conditions can all contribute to delay. NVIDIA describes end-to-end system latency as the time it takes for clicks to become on-screen actions in its Reflex Analyzer guide. Reflex Analyzer measures PC-plus-display latency; with compatible mouse hardware, it can include click-to-screen latency.

There is no definitive point at which everyone notices input lag. RTINGS gives around 30 ms as a rough level where lag may become noticeable and says 15–20 ms may already be problematic in reaction-based games, while emphasizing that perception varies. Treat these as estimates, not universal thresholds.

What a real OLED example tells you

RTINGS describes the 360 Hz Samsung Odyssey OLED G6/G60SD S27DG60 in its reviewed configuration as having low input lag and near-instantaneous pixel response. Those findings are specific to that reviewed model and configuration; they do not establish one input-lag value for OLED monitors as a category. See RTINGS’ Samsung Odyssey OLED G6/G60SD review.

How to choose or troubleshoot

  • Look for measured input lag at your intended resolution and refresh rate, rather than relying on a response-time specification.
  • Check whether the monitor needs Game, Instant, or another low-latency mode for its best result.
  • If you use a console or play at a capped frame rate, compare measurements at the refresh rate you will actually use.
  • If the game still feels delayed, investigate the PC or console, input device, game settings, and network—not just the monitor.
