Some do, but neither capability is automatic. Batch conversion is a feature that varies by application: one tool may process 100 files in parallel, while another limits a free run to five files or 50 pages per document. Metadata preservation is even more dependent on the exact source-to-target route and on which metadata you mean. EXIF camera data, document properties, PDF fields, and operating-system file dates are separate kinds of information. A converter can retain one, remove another, or discard all of them. Treat every product claim as a starting point, then test a representative set of files before converting an important archive.
What batch conversion actually includes
“Batch conversion” means processing multiple inputs without opening and converting each file individually. That broad description hides several practical differences:

- Batch size: Some applications accept a fixed number of files, while others queue an entire folder.
- Parallel processing: Files may be converted simultaneously or one after another. Parallel work can shorten a run, but it does not guarantee identical output quality.
- Mixed formats: A tool may accept different source formats in one queue, or require every item to use the same format.
- Folder behavior: Check whether subfolders are scanned recursively and whether the original directory structure is recreated in the output.
- Per-file controls: Some queues allow an individual file to use a different output setting, while others apply one preset to everything.
- Failure handling: Look for an error report, retry option, or a way to continue successful items when one file fails.
These are separate capabilities. A product page that says “batch conversion” does not by itself establish a maximum file count, recursive folder support, mixed-format handling, or recovery after an error.

Before starting a large run, confirm both directions of the conversion. Support for DOCX to PDF, for example, does not establish that PDF to DOCX is supported or produces equivalent results.
Metadata is not one thing
Ask which fields must survive instead of asking whether a converter “preserves metadata.” Common categories include:

An application can preserve original file dates while dropping EXIF, or retain a document title while losing comments and layout. A broad “metadata” checkbox cannot answer all of those questions.

Why conversion can lose metadata and content
There may be no equivalent field
Source and target formats do not always represent the same information. If the destination has no corresponding field, the converter must omit the value, place it in a less precise field, or store it in a nonstandard extension that other programs may ignore.
Re-encoding creates a new file
When an application writes a new image, document, or PDF, the operating system commonly assigns new file timestamps. A product may offer a preset to copy original dates, but that is an explicit behavior to verify, not a universal property of offline software.
Extraction is different from faithful conversion
Some routes rebuild content from an interpretation rather than carrying the original structure forward. Cove’s documentation states that its PDF-to-document conversion extracts text and drops the original visual layout. Text may therefore be usable while columns, positioning, graphics, or other visual features change.

Privacy features may intentionally remove data
Converter Software describes stripping metadata during image conversion, alongside resizing or quality changes. That is useful when sharing images without location or device information, but it is the opposite of preservation. Do not enable a cleaning or privacy option on an archive job unless removal is the goal.

Are offline converters really offline?
“Offline” generally refers to where the file is processed, not necessarily to every part of installation and maintenance. Filee says files are not uploaded and conversion runs on the computer. Converter Software says conversion runs locally but uses the internet for activation and updates. If your files are sensitive, check four separate points:
- Whether input files are sent to a cloud service during conversion.
- Whether activation requires a connection each time or only during installation.
- Whether updates or optional conversion engines download additional components.
- Whether error reporting or telemetry can be disabled.
Keep the application’s privacy and connectivity statements with your records, because features and requirements can change. A local processing claim does not automatically mean that setup, licensing, or updates work without any network access.

How to test batch and metadata behavior safely
A small test set gives you evidence for your exact formats without risking an archive. Include files that represent the edge cases in your workload: a short and long document, images with and without GPS data, a file in a nested folder, and an item with comments, attachments, or an unusual orientation.
- Record the source state. Save the original filenames, folder paths, file sizes, creation and modification dates, and the metadata fields you care about. For images, note EXIF values such as capture time, camera and GPS; for documents, record author, title, comments, bookmarks, and attachments where relevant.
- Choose the exact direction. Set the real source and target formats, not a similar test route. A converter can support one direction while handling the reverse direction differently.
- Run one file first. Inspect the output visually and check its properties. Confirm orientation, page breaks, fonts, profiles, links, forms, and attachments as applicable.
- Run a small batch. Use several files and at least one nested folder. Check whether the queue accepts mixed formats, whether the destination mirrors the directory structure, and whether an error on one item stops the rest.
- Compare metadata field by field. Do not rely on the presence of a generic metadata label. Open the output in a property viewer and compare each required field with the recorded source values.
- Test the failure path. Include an unsupported or damaged copy, not an irreplaceable original. Verify that the application reports the failure clearly and leaves successful outputs intact.
- Only then scale up. Preserve the originals, write outputs to a separate location, and keep a conversion log containing the application version, settings, date, and any exceptions.
Choosing a converter for a real workload
Use the following decision points in order. A tool that fails an earlier requirement is not suitable merely because it has a larger advertised format list.

Common failure symptoms and fixes
The batch stops after a few files
Check edition limits first. MultiDoc’s Free edition, for example, is described as allowing up to five files per conversion and 50 pages per file. Split the job into compliant groups or use an edition with higher limits if that fits your requirements. Also check whether a single oversized or unsupported item is aborting the queue.
Output files have new dates
Look for a setting that copies original file dates. If none exists, retain a manifest of the source timestamps and treat the generated files as new filesystem objects. Do not confuse a preserved document property with a preserved operating-system date.
Images lose location or camera information
Inspect the converter’s metadata and privacy settings. A stripping option may be enabled, or the target format may not carry every EXIF field. If GPS retention is mandatory, verify it on a test output before processing the archive.
The document opens but no longer looks the same
That is expected for some extraction-based routes. Cove documents that PDF-to-document conversion extracts text and drops the original visual layout. Keep the original PDF when appearance, page geometry, or positioning has legal or operational significance.
Conversion works only with an internet connection
Separate processing from activation and updates. A local engine may still require an initial license check or downloaded component. If your environment is isolated, obtain the vendor’s documented offline-activation procedure and test it before moving sensitive files onto the machine.
Bottom line
Offline converters can batch-process files, but the useful question is not simply “does it support batches?” Verify the maximum queue size, folder behavior, mixed-format handling, and failure recovery for your workload. Likewise, metadata preservation must be specified field by field: EXIF, document properties, PDF fields, and file dates can have different outcomes. Vendor descriptions such as Filee’s “one or 100” parallel files, MultiDoc’s five-file and 50-page Free limits, Converter Software’s local processing and metadata-stripping option, and Cove’s documented layout loss show why a small, representative test is essential before a full conversion.
