Mouse repellent pouches are odor-based products intended for particular enclosed spaces; they are not a proven stand-alone fix for mice already inside a home. Among the products documented here, Fresh Cab’s EPA-accepted label gives a clear placement rate and replacement direction. If you see mouse activity, pair any pouch use with trapping, food control, and sealing entry points.
Which mouse repellent pouch has verifiable directions?
Fresh Cab is a documented pouch product. Its U.S. EPA-accepted label, dated April 10, 2023, lists balsam fir oil at 2.0% as the active ingredient; fragrance oil and plant fibers make up the remaining 98.0%. The available evidence does not establish a best-performing brand: there is no independent head-to-head trial or measured comparative result here. Treat Fresh Cab as a product with documented label directions, not as a proven winner over other pouches.

The label directs use in enclosed, non-living storage areas. Examples include attics, basements, garages, sheds, pantries, barns, storage units, vehicles, boats, cabins, and farm equipment. Do not assume the same placement guidance applies to another product; follow that product’s own label.

- Measure the area to be protected. The label rate is one pouch per 8 square feet. It gives the examples of four pouches in a single-car garage and one pouch in a pantry.
- Place pouches in the enclosed storage area. Use the label rate for the area, rather than assuming a single pouch will protect a larger space.
- Check the scent over time. Replace a pouch when its scent has diminished, as the label directs. Keep the product out of children’s reach.
The label says the product can be effective for “up to 30 days,” but this is a label claim, not an independently verified duration or a guarantee. It also states that effectiveness depends on air exchange rates and temperature, so the replacement interval can vary with conditions.
Do peppermint oil or scented pouches keep mice out?
Do not count on peppermint oil to stop mice from entering a home. In an Ask Extension response dated January 17, 2023, an expert answering a question from Deschutes County, Oregon, said, “Peppermint is not going to deter mice from entering your home.” Read the Ask Extension response.

That advice addresses peppermint as a home-entry deterrent; it does not test every pouch or scent. Likewise, the EPA page about certain exempt ingredients in skin-applied repellents says those ingredients have not been evaluated for effectiveness. It concerns products applied to skin, not rodent pouches, so it cannot establish whether a pouch works. See the EPA’s guidance on skin-applied repellents.
What should you do if mice are already inside?
For active mouse problems, use practical control measures rather than relying on scent alone. The Ask Extension expert recommends snap-trapping, removing access to food—including pet food—and finding and blocking entry points.

- Trap: Use snap traps where there is mouse activity.
- Remove food access: Secure food and pet food so mice cannot reach it.
- Find and seal openings: The expert names steel wool, hardware cloth with 1/4-inch squares, and concrete patching as materials for blocking entrances.
Pouches may be considered for an enclosed storage space when the product label covers that use. The evidence cited here does not show that they prevent every mouse from entering, eliminate an infestation, or outperform trapping and exclusion.
