Do Mosquitoes Prefer Some People? What Attracts Them and What You Can Change

Yes. Mosquitoes can be more attracted to some people than others. A 2022 laboratory study found stable differences in how strongly Aedes aegypti mosquitoes responded to human odors. The most attractive subjects tended to have higher levels of several skin-derived carboxylic acids. That does not mean one chemical makes someone a universal “mosquito magnet,” or that you can reliably change your baseline scent with a food, soap, or home remedy.

Mosquitoes locate hosts by combining several signals: exhaled carbon dioxide, skin odor, body heat and, in a 2024 experiment, thermal infrared. Attraction depends on the mosquito species and the setting. The practical answer is to reduce exposure with an EPA-registered repellent, covering clothing, treated gear, screens, air conditioning where available, and removal of standing water.

Why do mosquitoes always bite me?

There are two different experiences people often combine: being approached more often and reacting more strongly to bites. A person who develops large, itchy welts may feel bitten constantly even when another person nearby received a similar number of bites. Actual attraction and the severity of your skin reaction are separate questions.

Controlled experiments show that mosquitoes do not respond identically to every human. In the principal 2022 study, researchers collected skin-odor profiles from 64 people and ran more than 2,330 behavioral trials over 174 experimental days during a 3.1-year project. A separate validation group included 56 new subjects. The same individuals tended to remain relatively attractive or unattractive to the mosquitoes in the test conditions, indicating that the differences were not simply random trial-to-trial noise.

Those figures describe the design of one laboratory investigation; they are not a percentage of people who are “mosquito magnets.” The mosquitoes were Aedes aegypti, and the assays used controlled odor presentations. Results cannot establish a universal ranking of people outdoors, across every mosquito species, climate, or geographic region.

What attracts mosquitoes to a person?

Skin odor and carboxylic acids

The 2022 study linked higher attractiveness with greater amounts of several carboxylic acids found in skin odor. These compounds are part of the complex chemical mixture released by skin and influenced by the skin’s microbial environment. The authors reported an association, not proof that one acid causes attraction by itself.

Odor blends differed substantially among participants. One person with relatively high carboxylic-acid levels was still weakly attractive in the behavioral tests. That exception matters: mosquito attraction is a pattern produced by a mixture of chemicals and their proportions, not a single “mosquito chemical” that everyone can remove.

Carbon dioxide from breathing

Exhaled carbon dioxide is a long-range host cue. Mosquitoes can detect the plume from breathing and use it to orient toward a possible animal host. Carbon dioxide is only one part of the process: it helps bring mosquitoes into the area, while odor, heat and other cues help them decide where to approach and land.

Body heat

As a mosquito gets closer, heat from a living body provides another directional signal. Warmth helps the insect identify a suitable surface after odor and carbon dioxide have brought it within range. Ambient temperature, wind and surrounding heat sources can change how useful this cue is.

Thermal infrared: an emerging, species-specific finding

A 2024 experiment summarized by the National Institutes of Health examined Aedes aegypti and thermal infrared radiation. Infrared alone did not trigger host-seeking in the reported setup. When infrared was added to odor and carbon dioxide, approximately twice as many mosquitoes were drawn to a surface to probe. This finding shows how cues can work together; it is not evidence that infrared has the same role for every mosquito species or in every outdoor situation.

Why do I get bit by mosquitoes so much compared to others?

Several explanations can operate at once:

  • Different odor chemistry: your skin may produce an odor blend that is more attractive to the species present.
  • More detectable carbon dioxide: breathing rate and the local air movement around you affect the carbon-dioxide plume mosquitoes follow.
  • Heat and proximity: someone who is warmer or closer to resting mosquitoes may be easier to locate.
  • Behavior and clothing: exposed ankles, arms or neck provide more landing opportunities than covered skin. Activity, perspiration, water exposure and rubbing can also change how long a repellent remains effective.
  • Where you stand: shade, vegetation, still air and nearby water can hold mosquitoes close to one person while another person is outside the flight path.
  • Skin reaction: immune responses vary. A small bite can cause a large welt in one person and barely visible irritation in another.

These factors do not produce a reliable personal score. A person who attracts Aedes aegypti in a laboratory may not be the most attractive target for another species in a different location.

Are people with Type O blood more attractive to mosquitoes?

That claim is not established. China’s disease-control authority states that there is currently no evidence that blood type changes mosquito attractiveness. Treat blood type as an unproven explanation rather than a settled reason that one person is bitten more often.

Blood type also is not a practical control lever. Even if a future study identified an association in a particular species or setting, it would not replace repellents, clothing, screens or water management.

Can you change your natural attractiveness to mosquitoes?

No dependable method has been demonstrated for permanently changing a person’s baseline odor profile. The 2022 findings identify an association between attractiveness and several skin chemicals, but they do not provide a proven diet, supplement, soap, probiotic or deodorant routine that makes a person unattractive to mosquitoes.

Temporary changes are possible in the environment around your skin. Washing may remove some surface odors for a time, but it is not a tested way to prevent bites. Sweat, activity, heat, clothing and any repellent applied afterward can alter the cues mosquitoes encounter. Because those effects are short-lived and variable, exposure reduction is more reliable than trying to redesign your body odor.

What actually reduces mosquito bites?

1. Choose an EPA-registered skin repellent

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends repellents registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Common active ingredients listed by CDC include DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) and 2-undecanone. Check the package for an EPA registration number and follow the label for where, how often and how much to apply.

CDC states: “We do not know the effectiveness of non-EPA registered insect repellents, including some natural repellents.” “Natural” is not a performance standard, and an unregistered product should not be assumed to offer dependable protection.

Selection question What to check
Is it evaluated for use? Look for an EPA registration number on the product label.
Which active ingredient? Examples listed by CDC are DEET, picaridin, IR3535, OLE, PMD and 2-undecanone.
How long will it last? Use the label’s stated duration. Protection varies with mosquito species, temperature, activity, perspiration, water exposure and rubbing.
Who will use it? Check age directions, skin warnings and instructions for children, pregnancy or sensitive skin on the specific label.
Are clothes or gear involved? Use a product labeled for clothing or gear; do not substitute a permethrin clothing treatment for a skin repellent.

Higher active-ingredient concentrations generally provide longer protection, according to the CDC Yellow Book, but concentration is not permission to ignore the label. Reapply only as directed, and do not interpret any duration claim as a guarantee of zero bites.

2. Cover exposed skin

Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when mosquitoes are active. Loose fabric is preferable to tight clothing that presses against skin. Coverage reduces the number of landing sites, but mosquitoes can still bite through thin or tightly stretched material, so use repellent on exposed skin as directed.

3. Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear correctly

Permethrin-treated clothing, socks, tents, nets and other gear add a physical and chemical barrier. Products made for clothing and equipment are not for direct application to skin. Follow the garment or treatment instructions for application, drying, washing and replacement.

4. Improve barriers at home

Keep window and door screens intact and repair holes. Use air conditioning where available; closed, cooled indoor spaces generally provide fewer opportunities for mosquitoes than open windows without screens. Check doors that do not close fully, because a small gap can defeat an otherwise sound screen system.

5. Remove standing water every week

Many mosquitoes lay eggs in small collections of water close to homes. Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover or discard items that can hold water. Inspect buckets, plant saucers, toys, tarps, gutters, pet bowls, rain barrels and any container left outdoors. Emptying alone may not remove eggs stuck to a container’s sides, which is why scrubbing is part of CDC’s recommendation.

6. Protect babies and travelers with the right equipment

For a stroller, baby carrier or travel cot, use mosquito netting designed to fit securely and leave no openings around the edges. Repellent labels govern age limits and application; CDC specifically advises not using OLE or PMD products on children under 3. Never apply a clothing or gear treatment directly to a child’s skin.

How to use repellent without common mistakes

  1. Read the entire label, including age restrictions, reapplication interval and surfaces approved for use.
  2. Apply only to exposed skin and clothing areas named on the label. Do not spray directly onto the face; put the product on your hands first if the label permits facial application.
  3. Keep repellent away from eyes, mouth, cuts and irritated skin. Wash hands after application.
  4. If sunscreen is also needed, apply sunscreen first and repellent second unless the product label gives different instructions.
  5. After coming indoors, wash treated skin with soap and water. Wash treated clothing according to its label.
  6. Stop using the product and seek medical advice for a concerning reaction, breathing difficulty or accidental ingestion.

What the evidence does—and does not—prove

Question Best-supported answer
Do mosquitoes prefer some people? Yes, stable differences were observed in controlled Aedes aegypti odor assays.
Is one skin chemical responsible? No. Carboxylic acids were associated with attraction, but odor blends varied and no single compound explains every result.
Does the result apply to every mosquito? No. Species, location and conditions can change host-finding behavior.
Does Type O blood explain bites? There is currently no evidence from China’s CDC that blood type changes attractiveness.
Does infrared make people universally more attractive? No. The 2024 infrared result was from an Aedes aegypti experiment in which infrared strengthened responses to odor and carbon dioxide.
Can any repellent guarantee no bites? No. Duration and performance vary, and CDC guidance does not promise complete protection.

Bottom line for people who feel like mosquito magnets

Your experience may reflect real differences in attraction, but science cannot yet turn those differences into a simple personal diagnosis or a proven odor-changing trick. Human skin chemistry, exhaled carbon dioxide, heat and—under specific conditions—infrared all contribute to host finding. The dependable response is behavioral: use an EPA-registered repellent as labeled, cover skin, choose treated clothing or gear when appropriate, maintain screens, and eliminate standing water every week. Those steps reduce opportunities for bites regardless of why mosquitoes selected you in the first place.
