Fast travel is not reported to reset the Mistbury Catacombs switches. Dungeon walkthroughs say the four-switch puzzle normally remains solved when you travel away, while logging out, restarting the host or server, or loading the dungeon again can reset its state. In co-op, keep the host session running until everyone has opened the final gate. If all four indicator lights are visibly on but the gate remains closed, the practical recovery reported by players is to leave the Catacombs, fully exit and restart Enshrouded, then enter the dungeon again.
What resets the Mistbury Catacombs puzzle?
Mistbury Catacombs is the dungeon associated with The Queen’s Tomb quest. Its final room has a gate with four indicator lights above it. Four separate switches must be activated; each switch illuminates one light. When the complete set is recognized, the gate should open and reveal the sarcophagus containing Pikemead’s Bulwark.

The available evidence points to a difference between travelling and reloading. A dungeon walkthrough reports that fast travel away from Mistbury does not reset the switches. By contrast, logging out resets the dungeon according to that same guide. A host restart, server restart, or any fresh dungeon load should therefore be treated as a possible reset as well. That is a practical precaution rather than a published Mistbury-specific rule from Keen Games.
This distinction matters most in a party. A player can leave the area temporarily, but ending the session that owns the dungeon may discard the puzzle state. Finish the switch sequence and open the reward gate before the host logs out or restarts.

How the four-switch puzzle works
Four switches, four lights
Every required switch has a matching light above the final gate. Use those lights as your progress check instead of relying on memory or assuming a button interaction succeeded. If only three lights are on, the dungeon has not reset: one switch still has not been activated, or the game did not register an attack or interaction.
Different routes use different interactions
Guides describe several kinds of obstacles in the Catacombs:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Metal gates: these require lockpicks.
- Wooden doors: these can be destroyed rather than unlocked.
- Elevated sections: a grappling hook or another mobility ability helps reach them.
- Distant switches: a bow, wand, or another ranged attack can activate them from a distance.
Bring lockpicks and at least one ranged weapon before entering. A grappling hook is especially useful for elevated routes, but the exact traversal option depends on the abilities available to your character.
Fast travel, logout and restart: a multiplayer comparison
Use the following table when deciding whether someone can leave the dungeon or whether the party should finish first. “Reported” describes guide or player evidence, not a guaranteed rule for every future game build.
| Action | Does it reload the dungeon? | Practical expectation for switch state | Safest party choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast-travel away and return | Not reported as a reset in a Mistbury walkthrough | The four-switch progress should remain, provided the session stays active | Usually acceptable; verify the lights when you return |
| Player logs out while the session continues | May remove that player, but the dungeon-session result can vary | Do not assume the puzzle will persist after a leave/rejoin sequence | Have the player remain until the gate is open |
| Host logs out | Ends or suspends the session that owns the dungeon | Potential reset; exact behavior for every co-op setup is not officially specified | Open the gate before the host leaves |
| Host or server restart | Reloads the game world | Treat the switches as potentially reset | Complete the dungeon first, then restart |
| Fresh dungeon load after a crash or full exit | Reloads Mistbury | Progress may be gone; check all four lights rather than assuming a bug | Plan to repeat the switch run if the lights are no longer lit |
No official Keen Games page identified here defines persistence for every dedicated-server, host-transfer, or leave-and-rejoin sequence. The table is therefore a risk-management guide: fast travel is the low-risk action supported by the walkthrough, while anything that reloads the world deserves caution.
What co-op groups should do before entering
- Choose the session owner. Confirm which player is hosting or which server will remain online. That person should avoid logging out until the reward gate has opened.
- Check equipment. Carry lockpicks for metal gates, a bow, wand, or other ranged weapon for distant switches, and a grappling hook or mobility ability for high routes.
- Tell the party how progress is measured. The goal is four illuminated indicators above the final gate, not merely touching four apparent buttons. Ask everyone to call out when a light turns on.
- Keep the group together for the final check. Once the fourth light is on, travel to the gate and confirm that it opens before anyone fast-travels, disconnects, or restarts.
- Collect the reward. The sarcophagus beyond the gate contains Pikemead’s Bulwark, the item tied to completing this dungeon objective.
These steps reduce the two most common sources of confusion: mistaking an unvisited switch for a reset and ending the session before the game has opened the gate.

Can you leave and come back without redoing the Catacombs?
Leaving by fast travel is reported not to reset Mistbury, so a player who needs to visit another location can normally return and continue checking the four lights. This is different from ending the world session. A logout or restart creates a new load event, and the available guide evidence says logout resets the dungeon.
There is no single documented rule for every multiplayer sequence. For example, the evidence does not establish whether a non-host disconnect followed by a rejoin always preserves the same state on every server configuration. If the host remains online and the party returns through fast travel, preservation is the expectation supported by the walkthrough. If the host or server is restarted, plan for the switches to require another run.
When you return, inspect the gate before searching the entire dungeon again. Four lit indicators mean the puzzle has registered all switches; fewer lights identify an incomplete state. This simple check prevents treating an ordinary missed switch as a reset.
All four lights are on, but the gate is closed
A gate that stays shut after all four indicators appear illuminated is a known community-reported failure mode. It is not proof that the party activated a hidden fifth switch. Two Steam support discussions describe the condition, and a participant reported solving it by exiting the game completely and redoing the Catacombs.

Recovery sequence
- Verify the lights. Stand at the final gate and make sure all four indicators are genuinely glowing. If one is dark, search for the missing switch before restarting.
- Leave the dungeon. Move the party out of Mistbury rather than repeatedly attacking the closed gate.
- Fully exit Enshrouded. Close the game instead of merely returning to a menu or switching characters.
- Restart the same multiplayer session. Have the host or server start normally, then let the party reconnect.
- Re-enter and redo the Catacombs. The player report that resolved the stuck state involved repeating the dungeon after the full exit.
- Check the indicators again. Activate each switch and return to the gate. If it opens, loot Pikemead’s Bulwark before anyone restarts.
This is a practical player-reported workaround, not an official guarantee. If the gate remains closed after a clean restart and a complete second run, record the game version, multiplayer setup, and which indicators were lit before seeking support. Those details distinguish a missing switch from a reproducible quest or dungeon-state error.

A repost of older patch notes records a Mistbury Catacombs quest-progress reset issue. That confirms that reset-related bugs have existed, but it does not show that every modern reset is a bug or that the old issue still affects the current build. Game updates can change persistence behavior, so avoid applying a historical workaround as if it were a permanent mechanic.
The strongest current practical rule remains conditional: guide evidence supports fast travel as non-resetting, while logout and reload events should be considered capable of resetting progress. Keen Games’ official multiplayer FAQ confirms the game is online co-op and supports “up to 16” players, but it does not define Mistbury-specific switch persistence.

The player-support evidence is narrower. A Steam participant wrote, “I have since solved this by exiting the game completely and redoing the catacombs,” in a January 26, 2024 discussion. That statement documents one successful recovery, not a developer-certified fix or a promise that the same sequence will work in every build.
Common mistakes that look like a reset
A ranged switch was never registered
Some switches can be triggered from a distance, but a projectile that hits scenery or misses the mechanism will not count. Wait for the corresponding light to illuminate before moving on.
The party opened only three switches
The four-light layout makes an incomplete run easy to misread. Count the lights at the gate and retrace the routes before abandoning the session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA traversal tool blocked the route
An inaccessible elevated section can leave one switch untouched. Recheck upper platforms with a grappling hook or another mobility ability, and use lockpicks on metal gates rather than searching for a destructible door.
The session was reloaded unexpectedly
A crash, host restart, server restart, or full logout can produce a genuine state loss. In that case, do not infer that fast travel caused the reset; the reload event is the more relevant difference.
A reliable decision rule for the host
- Need to leave briefly? Use fast travel and keep the host session active.
- Someone wants to log out? Check the four lights and open the gate first.
- The host must restart? Assume the puzzle may reset and warn the party that a repeat run could be necessary.
- All lights are lit but no gate? Use the full-exit-and-restart recovery, then repeat the dungeon if needed.
- Unsure whether progress is lost? Count the indicators before doing anything else; the lights are the clearest in-game state check.
This approach avoids promising persistence that has not been documented for every server arrangement while still letting groups use fast travel normally. Once the sarcophagus is open and Pikemead’s Bulwark is collected, the party can restart or reorganize without risking the unresolved switch puzzle.
