What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—but the exact KVM switch and the entire video connection determine which resolution and refresh rate you can use. A headline such as “4K KVM” is not enough: confirm that the switch supports your specific resolution at your target refresh rate over the ports and monitor arrangement you plan to use.
What determines resolution and refresh-rate support?
The exact KVM model and signal path
Every part of the video path must support the mode you want: the computer’s graphics output, port and interface version, KVM, any HDMI/DisplayPort conversion, cable, and monitor input. A KVM cannot create a mode that the computer-to-monitor connection cannot produce directly. Conversion can also reduce the available refresh rate: Belkin notes that a GPU may support 5K natively while the refresh rate through a KVM is lower because of conversion limitations. Belkin’s 5K2K guidance discusses that limitation.

Check the manufacturer’s mode table for the exact resolution-and-refresh-rate combination, not just the maximum resolution. For example, SIIG lists 3440×1440 at up to 100 Hz for one model, but recommends 60 Hz for best performance. Eaton lists 4096×2160 at 60 Hz as the maximum for its B005-DPUA4 model. These are model-specific examples, not general KVM limits.

EDID is information a monitor supplies about its supported display modes. A KVM may pass that information through or emulate it so a computer continues to detect a display when you switch sources. StarTech.com describes its EDID management and emulation as maintaining monitor settings across sources and helping prevent resolution drops, desktop rearrangement, or blank screens when switching. That is the vendor’s product description, not an independent test.

- KVM Switch 3 Monitors 2 Computers: This 2*Displayport + 1*HDMI KVM Switches allows you to switch effortlessly between two computers with one click — share 3 monitors and 4 USB 3.0 ports (keyboard, mouse, printer, webcam) without swapping cables. Space-saving KVM for home offices, content creators, and IT professionals. NOTE: Both computers must support triple-monitor output to use all 3 displays simultaneously. If either PC only supports 1 or 2 displays, the extra monitor(s) won’t activate
- Ultra HD 8K@60Hz/4K@240Hz Resolution: This USB KVM switch output features two DisplayPort 1.4 ports + one HDMI 2.1 port, each supporting up to 8K@60Hz resolution, and backward compatible with 8K@30Hz, 4K@240Hz/144Hz/120Hz/60Hz/30Hz. It also supports HDR10+, HDCP 2.3/1.4, VRR, FreeSync, and G-Sync, eliminating screen tearing and stuttering across three monitors, even at high frame rates. NOTE: If need to achieve 8K resolution, your computers and monitors both need to support 8K@60Hz resolution, and please make sure the length of your cables are within 2 meters 28AWG
- Two Switching Ways & Two Dispaly Modes: This KVM switch displayport HDMI supports button switching and desktop controller switching, freely switch between 2 computers. With the desktop controller, you can place this monitor switch for 2 computers outside your work area, making your desktop cleaner and tidier. Two Dispaly Modes, Mirror mode: Triple monitors output the same images, Extend mode: Triple monitors output different images. NOTE: Not support Keyboard shortcuts (hotkeys) toggles
- Wide Compatibility & Package List: This triple monitor KVM switch driver-free and plug and play, and supports Windows, and Linux systems. PACKAGE LIST: 1*KVM switch, 4*DP cables, 2*HDMI cables, 2*USB A cables, 1*power adapters, 1*desktop controller, 1*user guide
- NOTE: 1, To ensure normal usage, please make sure to connect the power supply via the power adapter. 2, To display content across three screens simultaneously, make sure each of your PC is equipped with 2 DisplayPort ports + 1 HDMI port. 3, Each computer at the input needs to be connected with 2* DP cables + 1* HDMI cable+1* USB cable. 4, Please make sure your PC supports 3 screens or above display function before purchasing. 5, If a signal converter or docking station is used, there may be compatibility issues. 6, NOT support EDID emulation
EDID features do not guarantee that every timing will work. In its guidance on secure KVMs, Belkin says the models covered read EDID blocks 1 and 2, while a cited DQHD timing is often found in later blocks. In that situation, the switch may not pass the timing. Check the exact KVM’s documentation for the desired mode rather than relying on the words “EDID” or “EDID emulation.” Belkin’s DQHD guidance explains this issue.
More than one monitor
If the KVM handles multiple monitors, find out whether each display has an independent video channel and what modes each channel supports. Do not assume that a dual-monitor KVM can send a different resolution or refresh rate to each screen; verify that behavior in the specific model’s manual and mode table.

How to check whether your setup will work
- Write down the target mode. Record the resolution and refresh rate you want for each monitor, along with each computer’s video output and each monitor’s input.
- Map the connection. List the ports, cables, and adapters between computer, KVM, and monitor. Note any HDMI-to-DisplayPort or DisplayPort-to-HDMI conversion.
- Find the exact KVM specifications. Check the model and hardware revision, then look for your resolution paired with your refresh rate for the relevant inputs, outputs, and conversion route.
- Check EDID behavior. Confirm whether the switch passes, emulates, or lets you configure EDID, and whether the desired display timing is supported.
- Verify every display channel. For multi-monitor use, confirm the number of independent channels and the supported mode on each one.
- Check the rest of the path. Confirm that the graphics output, monitor input, and cables support the same mode. If the computer cannot drive the monitor at that mode without the KVM, the switch will not make it possible.
What to do if switching changes the display
If a monitor goes blank, disappears from the computer, changes resolution, or causes windows to move after switching, check the KVM’s EDID settings and its compatibility guidance for your monitor. Also verify the selected mode against the manufacturer’s table and check the cable and conversion route. These symptoms can arise from how the KVM handles display detection; they do not, by themselves, establish that the monitor is defective.
