Do iPads have built-in WiFi? Yes. Every iPad includes Wi‑Fi, so it can connect to the internet through an available wireless network without an iPad cellular plan. The “Wi‑Fi” and “Wi‑Fi + Cellular” labels distinguish whether the tablet can also connect directly to a mobile carrier’s data network.
What built-in Wi‑Fi lets an iPad do
An iPad with Wi‑Fi can go online anywhere it can join a suitable Wi‑Fi network, such as a home router or public hotspot. Apple’s iPad internet connection guide explains how to connect to an available network. Wi‑Fi capability does not mean a mobile data plan is included.

A Wi‑Fi-only iPad can still access the internet; it simply cannot connect directly to a carrier’s cellular data network. Away from Wi‑Fi, you can use another internet path, such as a separate hotspot, or use content saved to the iPad for offline access.

| What you need to know | Wi‑Fi model | Wi‑Fi + Cellular model |
|---|---|---|
| Connects to Wi‑Fi | Yes | Yes |
| Internet away from Wi‑Fi | Requires another connection, such as a hotspot, or offline content. | Can use a carrier data network after compatible service is set up. |
| Separate carrier data plan | Not needed to use Wi‑Fi. | Required for cellular data; availability and charges depend on carrier and region. |
| SIM or eSIM | No cellular activation is implied by Wi‑Fi capability. | SIM options vary by model and market; some recent models use eSIM only. |
Apple’s cellular setup guidance describes service activation and model-specific SIM details. Check the exact iPad and carrier before buying or setting up cellular service.

How to connect an iPad to Wi‑Fi
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wi‑Fi and turn it on.
- Tap the network you want to join.
- Enter the network password if asked.
Apple says iPad can automatically join known networks. If a network does not connect, check that Wi‑Fi is on, confirm the password, and make sure the network is available. See Apple’s connection instructions for details.
What Connectivity Assist can do
On Wi‑Fi + Cellular iPads, Connectivity Assist may use cellular data along with Wi‑Fi when the Wi‑Fi connection is weak, busy, or lacks internet access. That can use mobile data and incur carrier charges. If you want to avoid cellular use while connected to Wi‑Fi, you can turn the feature off in Settings. Apple describes the feature and its behavior in its internet connection guide.

Cellular iPad does not mean a regular phone
A Wi‑Fi + Cellular iPad adds mobile data connectivity, not ordinary standalone cellular phone service. Apple states that these models support cellular data transmission only. Where supported, calls can be made using Wi‑Fi Calling with an iPhone; availability depends on the carrier and setup. See Apple’s cellular settings guide.
Check the exact model, region, and carrier
Wi‑Fi standards, cellular bands, SIM arrangements, and carrier compatibility vary across iPad generations and markets. For example, Apple lists Wi‑Fi 6 (802.11ax) with 2×2 MIMO for the iPad (A16), while 5G and LTE are listed for its Wi‑Fi + Cellular configurations; those specifications should not be assumed for every iPad. Apple’s technical specifications and model identification page can help identify the version you have or plan to buy.

- 10.2-inch Retina display
Apple says iPad (A16) Wi‑Fi + Cellular and later, iPad Pro (M4) Wi‑Fi + Cellular and later, iPad Air (M2) Wi‑Fi + Cellular and later, and iPad mini (A17 Pro) Wi‑Fi + Cellular models purchased worldwide use eSIM and do not have a physical SIM card. Regional exceptions and carrier support matter, so confirm the exact model and service availability before purchase or activation.

Which configuration fits your use?
- Choose Wi‑Fi if you usually have trusted Wi‑Fi or can use a separate hotspot when needed, and do not need the iPad itself to connect to mobile data.
- Consider Wi‑Fi + Cellular if you regularly need the iPad online in places without Wi‑Fi and are willing to arrange compatible carrier service and pay any applicable charges.
